When people think of Japan in winter, their minds usually go straight to exceptional skiing and snowboarding experiences, right? ⛷️💎🏂

But in Aomori Prefecture, there’s so much more to the season than that!

Cultural highlights of northern Honshu’s winter can be found in Goshogawara, a city about 20km west of the prefecture’s capital, that will create memories your family will talk about for years to come.

1. Tsugaru Stove Train 🚂🪵

With deep links to the local winter culture, the Tsugaru Stove Train is a 45min ride through the Aomori countryside. The carriages are heated by a pot-belly stove in the middle of the train.

The stove tender also grills local cuttlefish and squid for passengers to nibble on as they gather close round the fire and share this unique experience.

2. Tachineputa Museum

With roots going back to ancient harvest festivals, the Tachineputa Parade features gigantic lantern floats that roll through the streets of Goshogawara.

And when we say gigantic, we mean it! Each float is 6 storeys tall 🏢 and weighs more than 3 adult African elephants! 🐘🐘🐘

The purpose-built Tachineputa Museum houses some of these floats so that visitors can get a feeling for the August festival any time of year no matter the weather. Each floor has a different theme, and its viewing balcony looking out over sections of these huge floats.

Carving turns down perfect groomers is a lot of fun, but one of our favourite parts of a trip to the snow is après-ski!

And if you want to relax in true Japanese style, you have to come to Ajigasawa!

On the northwestern coast of Aomori Prefecture, not far from Aomori Spring’s ski fields, the town of Ajigasawa is famous for its incredible seafood and onsen hot springs.

Winter is the perfect season to experience Ajigasawa’s legendary Hirame no Zuke Don. Hirame—a local flounder—is at its best during the colder months, with rich flavour and a buttery texture. Carefully marinated and served over vinegared rice, it’s a dish you won’t forget. 🐟🍚🤩

After your meal, unwind at one of Ajigasawa’s famous hot springs. Suigun no Yado offers day-use hot spring bathing from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, featuring its unique 300,000-year-old fossil seawater onsen, renowned for its high mineral content and soothing warmth after a day on the slopes.

You can also enjoy a day-use onsen at Hotel Grand Mer Sankaiso. Please note that day-use availability varies by date, so we recommend checking in advance before your visit.

Japan’s secret for being a world-class ski destination has been out in the open for quite some time now. But what most visitors miss is what’s hiding in northern Honshu!

With over 300 years of history, Sukayu Onsen is a national treasure. Tucked into the Hakkoda Mountains, this bathhouse, fed by a naturally-heated ancient mountain spring, is a piece of Japanese history that you can experience firsthand.

Not far from Hakkoda’s ski fields, it makes sense that this onsen is popular with the powder hounds, but there’s plenty of space. One of its baths (built entirely out of Aomori hiba wood btw) is known as Sennin Buro - the Bath of a Thousand Bathers.

It’s not quite that big, but you get the idea!

There are two other onsen baths here and they’re all under the roof of the Hakkoda area’s oldest timber building, which adds to the beauty, history and authenticity of this fascinating place.

You’ll also find a traditional ryokan-style inn here if you want to stay the night, and a little restaurant where you can enjoy local cuisine like sukayu soba noodles and ginger miso bamboo oden (Japanese style stewed vegetables and dumplings).

Famous in the Japanese springtime for its incredible sakura cherry blossoms, 🌸 historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori’s west is also the place to come in winter as well! ❄️

For the last 50 years, Hirosaki Castle has been the centre of the Yuki-Doro (Snow Lantern) Festival - one of the region’s 5 major annual snow festivals.

With the illuminated snow-covered castle as the backdrop, this festival features hundreds of tiny lanterns made of snow and lit from within so that they glow with winter magic. ✨

There’s also an outdoor gallery, where pictures of traditional nebuta characters - warriors and monsters - glow in the winter evenings. There are also snow sculptures and even a slippery dip made of snow for visitors to slide down! 🛝

A visit to Hirosaki Castle during the wonderful Snow Lantern Festival is the perfect way to break up a ski holiday and enjoy the culture of Aomori in one of our most fun seasons.

As you go, you’re accompanied by the mountainside’s iconic Snow Monsters! ❄️👹 But don’t worry, these monsters aren’t scary.

In reality, Snow Monsters - or ‘juhyo’ - are ice- and rime-covered fir trees that are frozen into a looming position throughout the winter. Up to 5 metres tall, the monsters add an eerie element to the snowy landscape.

Aomori’s Takayama Inari Shrine is the northern (and in our opinion more beautiful!) answer to Kyoto's famous Fushimi Inari Taisha. ⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️

With thousands of torri gates winding through the landscape, Tsugaru City's biggest shinto shrine becomes even more striking in winter, with the pathway of vibrant red torri are surrounded by the white glow of deep fresh snowfall.

High up on Aomori’s west coast, this temple is ancient, with roots that date back to the Kamakura Period in the 12th Century CE. This place is both incredibly photogenic and boundlessly atmospheric - a must-visit and the perfect side mission on your ski holiday this coming winter.

Known as the Bridge of Longevity, the beautiful Tsuru no Maihashi Bridge (‘Crane Dance Bridge’ in English) is the longest wooden bridge in Japan and is said to bring good fortune, romance and long life to all who cross its elegant sweeping arches.

Close to the northwestern city of Tsugaru, Tsuru no Maihashi gets its name from the way its triple arches like two great red-crowned cranes in flight.

Spanning 300m across the sparkling waters of Lake Fujimi, which gives perfect reflections of Mount Iwaki, the bridge is one of Japan’s special Power Spots.

Until recently, Tsuru no Maihashi has been closed for restoration since 2023.

It’s so good to have this graceful bridge back open to visitors again! 🥰
