Rugged, wild and blessed with up to 20m of fresh snow a year (and a base about 4m deep), the Hakkoda Mountains south of Aomori City are a powder hound’s paradise! ❄️🐺

Straight from the gondola - the iconic Hakkoda Ropeway - you’ve got full access to a vast area of backcountry skiing here that ranges across 8 different peaks! 🏔️

But this isn’t your typical ski resort; and that’s exactly the point.

You won’t find queues or crowds here, and with over 70% of Hakkoda left ungroomed, you won’t find easy runs or family practice slopes either.

What you will find is deep, untouched powder and a true free-ride experience.

It’s the kind of place where every run feels like your own line, weaving through snow-laden trees and natural contours shaped by the mountain itself.

If you thought skiing in Japan finishes at the end of winter, you’d be wrong! 🎿

On the dramatic slopes of the Hakkoda Mountains in central Aomori Prefecture, the snow sticks around all through April, making Hakkoda one of the few places you can enjoy Spring Skiing! 🌱❄️

And if the warmer, more stable weather of April and early May isn’t enough to get your attention, what about the adventure of the Hakkoda Snow Corridor?!

From 1 April, snow ploughs open the Hakkoda–Towada Gold Line. This 8km trail cuts a 10m-deep path through the snow connecting Sugayu in Aomori City to Yachi in Tawada.

You can drive this road, but if you want to experience the overwhelming scale of nature, a hike along the Hakkoda–Towada Gold Line Snow Corridor is a must! 🥾🤩

Did you know that Aomori Prefecture’s apples are highly prized around the world? 🍎🏅🍏 In fact, we product over half of all Japan’s apples!

The biggest orchard in Japan is Hirosaki Apple Park, which is home to almost 2.5k trees! 🌳 🌳 🌳

In early spring, visitors can come to the park and learn the secret art of apple tree pruning, shaping the trees so that come autumn, they produce the best fruit possible.

And if you’re here in autumn, you can also have a go at picking the apples too! There’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly-picked Aomori apples! 😋

If you love a walking holiday, you have to check out the Michinoku Coastal Trail in northeast Japan! 🥾🇯🇵

Running for over 1,000km down the coast of Honshu, this is one of Japan's great hiking trails and was selected as one of National Geographic’s ‘Best Trips’. 🏅

But if walking 1,000km sounds like too much, there’s an easy-going 12km section known as the Tanehashi Coast that starts on Kabushima Island in Hachinohe and goes down to Okuki Fishing Port and should only take about 2 1/2 hours.

Along this trail, you’ll see beautiful rocky reefs blooming with seasonal flowers, a beach with rare ‘singing sand’, and natural lawns that stretch all the way to the water’s edge.

This trail was created as part of the post-reconstruction project after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that devastated so much of the region. It begins in the beautiful Aomori beachside city of Hachinohe and ends in Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture.

🌸🌸🌸 Everybody loves Sakura season - Japan’s beautiful cherry blossom displays - but Aomori Prefecture takes it to another level! 🌸🌸🌸

Hirosaki Park and its famous castle is home to over 2,000 cherry blossom trees and many different types, including the magnificent Yaezakura tree that makes flowers with up to 50 petals instead of the usual 5!

Seeing the delicate pink and white flowers covering these trees and their dark trunks and branches is wonderful, but even better is Hanaikada or ‘flower raft’ time.

At the end of Sakura season, the blossoms fall creating magnificent blankets like snow. At Hirosaki Park, the moat around the castle is also covered, making an even more magical spectacle.

And if you thought Hirosaki’s Sakura was beautiful during the day, come back at night for the special illuminations that bring the cherry blossoms around this historic park to life!

Forecast for Aomori Sakura 2026 are:

🌸 Bud-burst (Kaika): between 15–16 April
🌸 Full bloom (Mankai): between 19–21 April
🌸 Flower raft (Hanaikada): between 23-27 April
🌸 Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival: 17 April – 5 May

Most people think that the Hakkoda Mountains, just south of Aomori City, are only for skiers and snowboarders in the white winter months. ⛷️🏂

But that’s not true at all!

In fact, some of the best ways to see this majestic mountain scape is when you’re not hurtling downhill!

From Mount Hakkoda, you can explore the forests of the region on foot with a guided snow-shoe hike or from above on the famous Hakkoda Ropeway, which climbs up the mountain to its alpine summit. 🚠🏔️

This way, you also get up close and personal with the looming giant forms of the snow monsters - great ice and snow covered trees that haunt the upper reaches of the mountains.

If you want the best of both worlds, there are also ski-hiking trails to explore the slopes and the scenery 🎿🥾❄️

And let’s not forget all the goodies that go with après-ski. Settling into a naturally heated hot spring onsen with the snow falling around you is about as good as it gets!

This is what a trip down memory lane is like irl! 🕰️

In contrast to the hustle of Towada City’s busy streets is Shokurakagai Sanbongi 1955. This is a ‘yatai village’, a purpose-built zone of the city that harks back to a bygone era.

Narrow laneways lined with lanterns, nostalgic decorations and little food stalls create a cinematic old-Japan atmosphere.

Visitors and locals love coming to Shokurakagai Sanbongi 1955 for its locally-run izakaya-style dining to enjoy regional specialties and take you back in time to mid-20th Century Japan.

You can find other yatai villages around Aomori - Hachinohe also has one known as Miroku Yokocho - that give you a taste of times gone by.

Literally frozen in time, the waterfalls of the Oirase Gorge in central Aomori Prefecture become sparkling ice curtains in winter. 🧊

Following this river through its eponymous gorge to more frozen waterfalls than anywhere else in Japan, the Frozen Oirase Gorge Tour guides you to the most dramatic views of this winter paradise.

There are three different tour options - each one takes you along the 14km of the gorge in a bus with opportunities to explore on foot at points.

☀️ The Day Tour shows so much of the gorge’s frozen beauty, and the frequent stops mean you get to see the frozen falls and even spot wildlife tracks in the snow. This is a great tour if you’re not staying in the area as it begins and ends at the train stations.

🌙 The Night Tour includes all the amazing views of the Day Tour, but thanks to clever illuminations around the river, the ice and snow shine with beautiful colours and lights. This is the perfect after-dinner experience if you’re staying inTowada City or the Oirase Keiryu Onsen area.

🌙🏞️ This special night tour includes views of Lake Towada and the Ishigedo-no-se Rapids as well as the incredible views of the gorge from the tour bus and on-foot exploration. This one is only available for those staying on the shores of Lake Towada as it begins and ends here.
