If you’re exploring Hokkaido, one place that feels straight out of another world is Noboribetsu Jigokudani ♨️🔥

Known as “Hell Valley,” this dramatic landscape was formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The valley constantly breathes—steaming vents, bubbling sulfuric pools, and the scent of minerals filling the air. It’s not just a view, it’s an experience.

Legend says this is where demons (oni) live, guarding the gates of the underworld. As you walk along the wooden paths, surrounded by rising steam and rugged terrain, it’s easy to see why people believed this place was a gateway to hell.

But from this “hell,” something beautiful emerges—these geothermal waters flow down to create some of Japan’s most famous hot springs. So in a way, this valley is both fierce and healing at the same time.
