I’m pleased to share that ATAMI ToMoWa is featured in the August issue of Shin-Kenchiku Jutaku-Tokushu, released on July 19.

Jutaku-Tokushu is one of Japan’s leading architecture magazines, showcasing various
architecture through beautiful photos and detailed architectural drawings.
The article features ToMoWa with its structure and woodland garden before the interior was fully furnished.

At first glance, the building may look a little unusual in shape. However, architect Takaharu Tezuka explains in the article, “as an architect, I simply followed the fundamentals of wooden
construction without any pretentious intention.”
Standing under the roof, you begin to notice how naturally the building is in harmony with Japan’s climate and landscape.

Students studying architecture from Japan and abroad have already been visiting ToMoWa to
experience the building firsthand.

What exactly is this windowless building standing in the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood in Atami?

It is ToMoWa, a private onsen vacation rental, where guests can relax and enjoy moments of peace.

The oval-shaped building was inspired by the headquarters and factory of Pinarello, the renowned Italian bicycle manufacturer, which I came across during my stay in Treviso, Italy.

At the time, I was working as a sports journalist, and I felt it was the perfect inspiration for the project that would eventually become ToMoWa.

熱海の住宅地に出現！「窓がない!?何だ？この建物？」の正体は・・・

一棟貸し温泉ヴィラ「知輪／ToMoWa」

「知輪」のオーナーであるスポーツジャーナリストの私が、イタリアの人気自転車メーカー「Pinarello」本社工場のオーバル形状からインスピレーションを受け、インターネットの画像検索で出てきた建築家の手塚貴晴さん・手塚由比さんに（世界で活躍する建築家とは知らず）自分の希望を書き綴った長文をメールしたのが2023年。

手塚さんが熱烈なサイクリストであること、ゆかりの地であるクロアチアやイギリスが私の活動地域とほぼ同じことなど、（打ち合わせというより自転車雑談だった）最初の打ち合わせから3年以上の時を経てついに完成します！

あまりに独創的な建物のためか、道から多くの人が工事中の敷地に入ってきてしまうのですが、、、関心を持ってもらって嬉しい半分、オープン後は宿泊者の迷惑になってしまうので、今後は無断侵入禁止とします！

We are opening ATAMI ToMoWA, a private onsen villa for exclusive rental, in Atami, Shizuoka on August 18th, 2026

Internationally renowned architects Yui Tezuka and Takaharu Tezuka brought my vision of creating an exciting oval-shaped space reminiscent of a bicycle velodrome to life. Instead of the simple oval shape I had initially envisioned, these two maestros created a graceful half-moon-shaped building that makes the most of the site’s natural elevation changes.

Throughout the end of 2026 we will be accepting reservations exclusively from those who contact us through our official website, which is scheduled to launch on August 18th, as well as through our social media platforms. I’d be delighted to hear from you if you are interested.
