Nearby Amenomiya’s once-every-three-years National Intangible Cultural Heritage-designated festival will take place on Wednesday 29-April (Showa Day), 2026. Don’t miss this chance to see this unique event which is highlighted by a ceremony involving Shishi Lions dangling from a bridge, flailing back and forth with their heads just touching the river below.

沢山の交流が出来て、日本の温泉宿の文化が伝えれて、嬉しいです。
夕べにお泊まりになったニュージーランドからのご家族は志賀高原でスキーの帰りで寄って頂きました。夕方は立ち方の武さんと三味線の春駒さんを呼んで30分の芸妓ショー。夜は板長の懐石料理を食べてから温泉街に散策さして射的に行かれました。
温泉のおかげか、朝は「今まで一番良く眠れた」と。もちろん、ベッドではなくお布団で。
戸倉上山田だからこそ出来る経験♪

"Best ryokan experience – I wish we could go back there someday
We had a fantastic stay at this ryokan. Our room was very clean and generally there was peace and quiet. The hosts were warm, hospitable, and always willing to help – their kindness and willingness to support us in every situation made a huge impression. The meals were wonderfully prepared and very tasty, and the access to the excellent onsen allowed us to fully relax and enjoy the health benefits of the baths.

We really enjoyed the entertainment room, where we could play table tennis and have some fun. The ryokan was perfectly located – many interesting attractions in the area are within walking distance or by bus. We also had the opportunity to use the traditional costumes provided to move around the hotel and the surrounding area, which was a truly unique experience.

The stay in the traditional Japanese room and sleeping on tatami mats was a real joy and left us with memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. We lacked for nothing – everything was perfectly prepared. We especially appreciated the host's help with transporting our luggage to the train station. The whole experience was exceptional and we highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience true Japanese hospitality." (J-san)

Our inn, Kamesei Ryokan, has been recognized by Tattoo Friendly Onsen.
All of our onsen baths are tattoo friendly and we have a private outdoor bath as well for shy tattoos.
Please note we are not licensed for day trippers so our onsen baths are intended for guests spending the night.

5*. One of the best holiday experiences I have ever had. A MUST visit! I write this from the perspective of someone who has never stayed in a ryoken before. My family (wife and three children) arrived in Japan and made a special effort to travel north to experience the mountains. We were blown away by Tyler and his wife's hospitality. from the moment we arrived the service was impeccable. The welcome debrief, the tea ceremony, the onsen instructions, the food (oh my gosh the food!), we and the children were given the best possible start to our road trip. A few specifics... -Very child friendly. Kids will love this place. beautiful building, garden, rooms, playroom! - BOOK the supper. an amazing meal. I lost count of the dishes, and they catered for the little ones so well also. Sitting in your traditional robes tasting the best sashimi, miso soup, fish from the local river, locally grown apricots and grapes, I could go on. Splendid. -stay for more than one night! Wonderful place.
