ABBA RESORTS IZU — Zagyosoh will reopen its fully renovated South Wing in July 2026, unveiling six new guest rooms inspired by the theme of “a journey into Japanese culture.” Reflecting the poetic traditions of the Manyōshū and haiku, the interiors and color palettes evoke Japan’s timeless aesthetic, while traditional craftsmanship is seamlessly woven throughout. Each room is meticulously appointed with traditional craftsmanship that embodies the beauty of Japan, offering a refined and distinctive stay — one that evokes the sensation of stepping into the poetic landscapes of classical verse.

This spring, a new space for art opens quietly in Kanazawa.

YAMADART is conceived not simply as a gallery, but as an extension of a way of living — rooted in over a century of Japanese hospitality and shaped by the sensibility of onsen culture, where time slows, and perception deepens.

Its inaugural exhibition presents TAMA by New York–based artist Gen Saratani.

YAMADART stands as a window into contemporary creativity — where practices continually merge, evolve, and transform — while remaining grounded in the generative source of onsen culture, fostering both creative cultivation and cultural exchange.

With a new exhibition program unfolding every three to four months, the space remains in quiet, continuous evolution.

In his seminal series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, ukiyo-e artist Hokusai captured the many faces of Japan’s iconic mountain from different vantages around the Kanto Plain. Gora Kadan Fuji, long-awaited sister property to Hakone’s famed Gora-Kadan ryokan, offers the same varied experience of Mt. Fuji, with the perspective shifting temporally rather than spatially.

Located on the rolling southern foothills of Mt. Fuji, nearly every corner of this 42-room ryokan offers views of its stately neighbor — draped in mantles of snow in winter, skirted by fiery groves of maple and larch in autumn, a negative presence against the star-strewn sky at night, wrapped demurely in scarves of mist and cloud. Every glance out the window provides a different perspective of the mercurial Fuji.

The owners have drawn on decades of experience at the Hakone property to craft a new ryokan with flawless adaptability to guest needs, spending years to find the perfect location and design an exquisitely beautiful and unique retreat that raises the bar for the luxury ryokan experience. Like Hokusai’s woodblock prints, Gora Kadan Fuji will be a timeless classic.

Geihinkan, or guest house, is a word normally attached to the stately properties used by the imperial household or Japanese state to welcome foreign dignitaries. These rarified enclaves embody the classic elegance of Japan, presenting its ancient culture and craft to the world with flawless grace.

Akazawageihinkan strives to offer the same courtly experience to its guests. The property, nestled in a grove of old-growth trees that shield it from the stiff winds of the Izu coastline and surrounded by the whitewashed walls of an old samurai manse, is a world of quiet seclusion. With just 15 rooms, the service is highly tailored and the atmosphere peaceful.

With Akazawageihinkan’s attentive stewards immediately seeing to every need and endless options for relaxation, this is a ryokan made for lingering and luxuriating in the royal treatment.

In the Sengokuhara Highlands of Hakone, fields of silvergrass ripple around the surrounding peaks, their silken plumes swaying in a gentle welcome to travelers seeking respite from the lowland crowds. At the heart of this tranquil plateau — dotted with refined summer homes and intimate villas — lies Hakone Kairai, an exclusive retreat that hosts only one group per night.

With just a single reservation per night, a stay at Hakone Kairai is entirely bespoke. A dedicated concierge anticipates every need — whether the day calls for quiet seclusion or exploration of Hakone’s singular artistic traditions and volcanic landscape — guided by the insight and connections of local proprietor Kazunori Ota. The son of the family behind a historic ryokan, he grew up witnessing the profound ways in which ryokans can connect guests to the spirit of Japanese culture. His years abroad deepened his understanding of cross-cultural hospitality, inspiring him to create a property where those encounters might unfold anew. Hakone Kairai, he says, is “a small beginning” toward that vision.

With its fascinating history and wealth of fun activities, the town of Tomonoura, Hiroshima Prefecture, is an excellent destination for travelers seeking a little-known and interesting corner of Japan.

Tomonoura prospered for a thousand years as a place for sailors to wait until the tides were right for entering the Seto Inland Sea, but after motor vessels lessened the town’s importance, it settled into the sleepy little backwater it is today. Over the years, it has hosted plenty of historical events and prominent figures. Ryoma Sakamoto, the famous Samurai, was shipwrecked off Tomonoura in 1867, and more recently, the makers of the hit animated film “Ponyo” by Studio Ghibli and the movie “X-MEN Origins: Wolverine,” starring Hugh Jackman, were inspired by the town. The quiet streets of Tomonoura, with their historical buildings and quirky architecture, are perfect for strolling. Old buildings, ancient temples, and shops of all kinds, from local craft boutiques to ship chandlers, line the winding streets and alleys, allowing visitors to get a feel for the town’s relaxed lifestyle.

During your stay in Tomonoura, our member ryokan, Ochikochi & Villas, provides you with unforgettable moments. The Villas consists of old workshops, storehouses, and shops, some of them hundreds of years old, which have been transformed into luxury ryokan. The fascinating architecture, along with premium Japanese-style hospitality, makes staying at Ochikochi & Villas an experience to remember.

Myojinkan invites you to experience tranquil harmony – “Tabiji no Naka no Ma”

The untouched wilderness around Myojinkan invites you to experience the tranquil harmony of Japan’s natural world—a retreat into a hidden paradise where the noise of modern life fades away.

Perched at an elevation of 1,050 meters, Myojinkan provides more than breathtaking views—it offers a transformative experience that nurtures both body and mind. This is where Japan’s ancient tradition of Toji—therapeutic hot spring bathing—meets the subtle benefits of reconnecting with nature. The mineral-rich waters soothe and rejuvenate, while the gentle embrace of mountain air, shaped by its unique altitude and pressure, works in harmony with your body.

This blend of nature’s elements is often likened to a form of climatotherapy (“気候性地形療法”), where the shifts in altitude, air pressure, and climate subtly restore your inner balance. As the fresh mountain breeze fills your lungs, your heartbeat naturally slows, grounding you in the present moment.

Each season at Myojinkan tells a unique story of its surrounding Shinzan Yuukoku. In spring, the awakening forests bloom with vibrant greens and wildflowers. Summer brings cool mountain breezes, offering relief from the heat of Japan’s cities. Autumn transforms the valleys into a sea of fiery reds and golds, while winter blankets the landscape in pristine snow, creating a serene white haven.

The interplay of these seasonal changes reflects the Japanese appreciation for the fleeting beauty of nature—a reminder to savor the moment and embrace life’s impermanence. or many visitors to Japan, a journey often follows what is known as the “Golden Route”—Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka—vibrant cities rich with culture and history. However, the true essence of Japan lies not only in its urban treasures but also in the quiet spaces in between, where traditions, landscapes, and serenity come alive.

Myojinkan is one such place, a sanctuary amidst Shinzan Yuukoku that allows you to experience Japan’s timeless connection to nature and find renewal in its peaceful embrace.
