Discovered during the Muromachi period, Nagato Yumoto Onsen in Yamaguchi Prefecture has flourished for over 600-year history. At the heart of this historic hot spring resort stands OTANISANSO, a grand ryokan renowned throughout the Sanyo and Sanin regions. Adjacent to it lies the exclusive annex, “Bettei Otozure.”

The ryokan takes its name from the Otozure River, which flows through the heart of the hot spring town. This crystal-clear river offers the perfect opportunity to admire cherry blossoms in the spring and fireflies in the summer.

“Rather, it is about those who live here today cultivating a living culture deeply rooted in and engaged with the region. After all, having hot springs and a river woven into daily life is something quite extraordinary. One might end the day with a quiet soak in the Onsen or spend time by the river in easy conversation. Residents, staff, newcomers, and visitors alike share this space, each finding their own way to enjoy it. In turn, this fosters gentle economic activity, creates a natural sense of circulation, and forms the foundation of a sustainable way of life,” says Kazuhiro Otani, president and fifth-generation proprietor of OTANISANSO and Bettei Otozure.

The ryokan is a 30-minute drive from Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen line, and a four-minute drive from Muikamachi Station on the Joetsu Line. Board the Shinkansen at Tokyo Station and you arrive in just two hours. Standing out in the city of Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, Ryokan Hotel ryugon is housed in a relocated traditional Edo-period wooden house.

“What I want is for guests to stay multiple nights. One night isn’t enough to really understand the local culture. I want guests to enjoy the local culture and lifestyle while staying at this ryokan. It’s only by interacting with the locals that they can truly appreciate the importance of the culture. If they stay multiple nights, they can have dinner in town, then come back to the ryokan and have a drink over a light snack (the bar is open until midnight). Or maybe they’d like a light meal of soba noodles, curry rice, or a sandwich. That’s what our ryokan food menu is for. Of course, you can also order room service. That’s the kind of experience I want guests to have. The ryokan is merely a base for enjoying the town as a whole.”

This spring, ANABUKI-TEI completed a full renovation and reopened to guests. The estate — a private home in the heart of Takamatsu — has been reimagined around three Master Suites, each with its own dedicated bathroom. Their design draws on the aesthetic heritage of this city: the calm proportions of tatami, the translucency of shoji, and the craft traditions that have shaped Takamatsu for centuries — reinterpreted for the way we live today.

Step into Ryokan Shinsen, a sanctuary nestled in Takachiho, said to be touched by the gods, where Okami Kumi Satō welcomes guests with unmatched culinary delights and hospitality honed to perfection — an experience found nowhere else.

Takachiho is a town steeped in myth. It is home to Amano Iwato, the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu once hid, and the vast Amano Yasugawara cave, where countless gods gathered to resolve the crisis. It is also the site of Tenson Kōrin, where Ninigi-no-Mikoto (Amaterasu’s grandson) descended from the heavens.

Ms. Satō is the face of Takachiho’s finest ryokan. Bright and cheerful, she instantly puts guests at ease. It’s about an hour and twenty minutes by car from A*o Kumamoto Airport, and her warmth melts away the fatigue of travel the moment you meet her.

Yamanaka Onsen is among Ishikawa’s most prestigious hot-spring resorts, its renowned waters said to have been discovered 1,300 years ago by the priest Gyōki. Hanamurasaki, a long‑standing ryokan, began drawing notice around 2024, with rumors of it “becoming something incredible”— thanks to bold renovations led by its young proprietor, Kohei Yamada, that even reached Tokyo.

The name of the ryokan Hanamurasaki is derived from the phrase “Sanshi Suimei”, which praises the natural beauty of the region. As one walks through Hanamurasaki’s entrance through a large noren curtain bearing the double‑circle emblem on white, the first striking impression is the youthful staff greeting guests with bright smiles and a warm welcome. Such consistently uplifting hospitality in a ryokan feels like stepping into a high‑end resort. It’s enough to completely transform typical expectations of a ryokan.

The ryokan is run by a young team, led by the proprietor and his wife. The proprietor, Mr. Yamada, offered insights into the driving ideas behind the renovation and reform.
