Held every year during the Obon season, the Hachimantai Furusato Fireworks Festival is a summer tradition that brings together local residents and families returning home for the holidays. From taiko and Sansa Odori performances to a spectacular 40-minute fireworks display, there was plenty to enjoy! 🎇

The Morioka Sansa Odori Festival is a massive annual traditional dance and taiko drumming festival held from August 1 to 4 in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture.

Sansa Odori is said to have originated from a local legend at Mitsuishi Shrine in Morioka. After a trouble-making demon was defeated, villagers celebrated by dancing around the shrine’s three sacred rocks, calling out “Sansa, Sansa.” Today, dancers parade through the streets to the rhythm of taiko drums and flutes, accompanied by the lively chant “Sakkora Choiwayasse” (Bring us happiness)!

Every year, the Festival brings together more than 200 groups from across Iwate, including the Hachimantai Sakura Sansa Dance Group 八幡平さくらさんさ愛好会

This year, the Hachimantai Group took part with more than 100 performers and came home with the Unified Sansa Odori Grand Prize, which recognizes groups that demonstrate particularly strong performances of the standardized Sansa Odori choreography!

Thank you to everyone who joined the July session of our “‘My Story’: Intercultural Lecture & Residents Meet-and-Greet,” and a special thank you to our two guest speakers for sharing their inspiring stories and experiences.

We’re now looking for guest speakers for future “My Story” events! Whether you’d like to share your culture, hobbies, experiences, or life in Japan, we’d love to hear your story. Interpretation is provided, and you’ll have time to prepare at your own pace.

Hachimantai’s New Community Facility “Hachi Terrace” Opens on August 8!

Located directly across from JR Obuke Station, Hachi Terrace is designed to be a welcoming space where people of all ages can gather, learn, and connect. It brings together a wide range of community facilities under one roof: a new city library with extensive collections of books and comfortable lounge spaces with views of Mt. Iwate, multipurpose event spaces, a migration support center, a café, childcare services, and large indoor play areas for children.

The name “Hachi Terrace” reflects Hachimantai’s “Hachi” (“eight” in Japanese - a lucky number), while “Terrace” symbolizes a place where people can gather and relax. Furthermore, the number 8, when turned on its side (∞ infinity), also represents hopes for Hachimantai’s continued growth and a bright future.

An opening ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on August 8, and the facility will officially open to the public from 12:00 p.m. that day onwards. A variety of special opening events and performances will also follow. For more details, visit the Hachi Terrace official Instagram account

This time, we are pleased to welcome two guest speakers: a Hachimantai native who returned home to carry on his family’s maitake mushroom business, and a resident from China who moved to Hachimantai after working for a Japanese company in Shanghai.

Whether you’re new to the area, have lived here for years, or simply enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, we hope you’ll join us for another evening of meaningful conversations and community connection.

Last week, a special forum was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Hachimantai area’s incorporation into Towada National Park in 1956, an expansion that led to the park being renamed Towada-Hachimantai National Park.

The event brought together researchers, outdoor enthusiasts, tourism professionals, and local community members to reflect on the region’s remarkable natural heritage and explore how conservation and sustainable tourism can help preserve it for generations to come.

The forum featured a keynote lecture by University of Tokyo Associate Professor Kiyotatsu Yamamoto, a talk show with comedians and avid mountaineers Tomoharu Shoji and Takuhiro Kimura, and a panel discussion with local mountain-related stakeholders on how to preserve and share the unique appeal of the Hachimantai region for the future.

⛰️ Mt. Iwate is open to hikers once again!
Standing at 2,038 meters, Mt. Iwate is the highest peak in Iwate Prefecture and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Affectionately known as the “Southern Fuji” for its beautiful silhouette, it offers breathtaking volcanic landscapes, alpine wildflowers, and panoramic views.

After two years of access restrictions due to volcanic activity, portions of Mt. Iwate’s hiking trails have officially reopened, welcoming hikers back to this iconic mountain.

Several trails lead to the summit of Mt. Iwate. One of the most popular is the Yakehashiri Course in Hachimantai, with the round-trip hike taking approximately 9 hours.

Before setting out, be sure to:
✔️ Check the latest weather and trail conditions
✔️ Submit a Climber Card and Descent Card at the trailhead (available in multiple languages)
✔️ Wear proper hiking gear and carry plenty of water
✔️ Stay on designated trails and obey all restricted-area signs
✔️ Carry a bear bell or bear spray, make noise on the trail, and leave no food or trash behind.

Protecting Hachimantai's natural enviroment, together 🌿

Part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Hachimantai is renowned for its breathtaking alpine landscapes and diverse mountain wildflowers. In recent years, however, invasive species such as western dandelions and oxeye daisies have spread along roads and hiking trails, threatening native vegetation.

This week, local environmental organizations and students from Matsuo Junior High School came together near Hachimantai Summit to remove these invasive plants, helping protect this unique ecosystem for future generations. A big thank you to everyone who took part in keeping Hachimantai beautiful!
