A Heian Period Pageant Revived at Daisen-ji Temple
On May 24th, under the beautiful fresh greenery of Mt. Daisen, the "Mikoshi Gyoko" (Palanquin Procession) was held for the first time in three years.
The sight of the gorgeous portable shrines and the procession of men clad in ancient costumes marching up the approach to Daisen-ji Temple was nothing short of breathtaking.
During its peak, Daisen-ji was a thriving center of mountain worship, rivaling even Mt. Hiei and Mt. Koya, with over 100 temples and 3,000 warrior monks. This special day truly brought that grand history back to life.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the local community, all the participants who dedicated their time to make this happen, and the many visitors who came to watch and support us. Thank you so much!
Affectionately known by locals as "Daisen-san," we hope to pass this cherished tradition down to the next generation.
With heartfelt thanks,
