Furthermore, record-breaking summer temperatures have transformed the ocean from a refreshing escape into a physically exhausting environment, drastically increasing the risk of heatstroke and the need for strict sun protection.

This decline in demand, coupled with shrinking public transportation networks and a drop in car ownership among younger generations, has forced many local beach facilities to close entirely. In response to these challenges, surviving coastal areas are reinventing their business models by shifting operational hours to cooler evenings and transitioning into multi-purpose beach spaces. Rather than focusing strictly on swimming, these updated venues now emphasize convenient equipment rentals, cafes, and community events to attract visitors seeking a comfortable, hands-free leisure experience.

Special summer fares from Naoetsu to the world heritage listed Sado Island, starting July 1st. The port is only 5 minutes drive from the house. [MORE ENGLISH FOLLOWS]

佐渡汽船は７月１日から３１日まで、新潟県民が小木―直江津航路を利用した場合の乗用車往復運賃に特別運賃を設定する。自動車を利用した佐渡への旅を促進し、航路利用につなげたい考えだ。

　特別運賃は車長３～６メートル未満の乗用車が対象で往復２万円。５メートルを超えるセダンや大型ＳＵＶ、輸入車などの場合、往復の自動車航走運賃と２等旅客運賃の合計が２万７６２０円で、通常時より２万円以上抑えられる。

　予約は受け付け中。申し込みは月曜から土曜までの午前８時３０分から午後５時までに佐渡汽船直江津総合案内所（電０２５・５４４・１２３４）へ。

Sado Kisen will be offering special fares for round-trip passenger car fares on the Ogi-Naoetsu route for Niigata Prefecture residents from July 1st to 31st. The aim is to promote travel to Sado by car and encourage the use of the ferry route.

The special fare applies to passenger cars between 3 and 6 meters in length, costing 20,000 yen round trip. For sedans, large SUVs, and imported cars exceeding 5 meters in length, the total of the round-trip car ferry fare and second-class passenger fare will be 27,620 yen, more than 20,000 yen less than the usual price.

Reservations are currently being accepted. To apply, please contact the Sado Kisen Naoetsu Information Center (Tel: 025-544-1234) from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday

Ride the yet to be discovered Kubiki Bike Trail to Itoigawa, through old rail tunnels, and past temples, markets and breath taking ocean scenery. Then catch the train back that stops on the way at the dystopian underground Tsutsuishi Station (筒石駅) underground station.
