Starting today, Yamashiro Onsen celebrates the Shobuyu Festival (Japanese Iris Hot Spring Bath Festival).

A shobuyu, an iris bath made with floating iris leaves, is a traditional Japanese custom believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good health throughout the year. It’s refreshing fragrance is also one of the seasonal pleasures of early summer.

At Beniya Mukayu, guests may enjoy an iris bath in our communal hot spring baths GENSEI and USUKO, as well as in the open-air baths of the guest rooms.

本日より山代温泉では「菖蒲湯まつり」が開催されています。菖蒲湯とは、菖蒲の葉や根を入れた湯のことです。薬効成分を含み、独特の芳香があり、不浄をはらい邪気を遠ざけ、健やかな一年を願う日本の伝統です。

At Beniya Mukayu, selected guest rooms have been arranged with sudō ― traditional sliding doors made of reed ― bringing a quiet sense of coolness to the space.

Used since late Edo period, and also known as “summer shōji”, they are one of Japan’s long traditions of living in harmony with the seasons.

Softly filtering the strong summer sunlight, they allow gentle breezes and natural light to pass through the organic material, creating a serene and refreshing atmosphere indoors.

べにや無何有では、一部の客室に「簾戸（すど）」を入れ、涼やかな設えといたしました。

簾戸とは、葦や女萩を用いた建具のことで、「夏障子」とも呼ばれています。江戸時代後期より使われてきた、日本の夏の知恵のひとつです。やわらかく日差しを遮りながら、風と光を通し、室内に静かな涼をもたらします。

Communal bath — GENSEI

Beniya Mukayu has two communal baths: GENSEI, is a bath for tranquil meditation featuring a round backrest in the bathtub.

At the entrance, you will find enshrined both “Kukuri-hime no Mikoto” and the “Yoho-butsu.”

— Kukuri-hime no Mikoto is a goddess enshrined at Shirayama Hime Shrine in Hakusan, Ishikawa prefecture — the head shrine of approximately 3,000 Hakusan shrines throughout Japan. It is important for Yamashiro Onsen history, as it has long been nurtured through the deep spiritual connection with the sacred Mount Hakusan.

— Yoho-butsu is a stone carved with images of Amida Nyorai facing four directions — east, west, south, and north (four-sided Buddha stone). It was originally part of the foundation
stone of a thirteen-tiered pagoda from the Muromachi period, once found in Nara and Kyoto.

The enshrinement of both the goddess Kukuri-hime and the Buddhist Yoho-butsu within the same space symbolizes Japan’s tradition of shinbutsu shūgō — the harmonious blending of Shinto and Buddhism.

温泉大浴場「玄青 GENSEI」

湯船の中に丸い背もたれがあり、瞑想へといざなう静寂の湯です。エントランスには、「菊理媛命」と「四方仏」が配されています。

― 菊理媛命（くくりひめのみこと）
全国約三千社にのぼる白山神社の総本宮である石川県白山比咩神社の祭神であり、『日本書紀』に登場する女神のひとり。山代温泉の歴史は霊峰白山との深いつながりの中で育まれてきました。

― 四方仏（よほうぶつ）
四方（東西南北）に阿弥陀如来を彫刻した石で、室町時代に奈良や京都にあった十三重の石塔の一番下の基壇の部分。

神の菊理媛命と仏の四方仏が同じ場所に祀られているのは日本文化の神仏習合の象徴といえます。

Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute × Beniya Mukayu
– Ginjo Sake Special Blend

Developed in collaboration with Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute, this original sake was created to complement Beniya Mukayu’s signature dishes — particularly duck hot pot (kamo nabe) and Japanese sansho pepper hot pot (sansho nabe)

By employing a sophisticated blending technique, it brings together the distinctive characteristics of sake rice varieties and different brewing years, resulting in a harmonious balance and a layered depth of flavor. It is composed of organically grown Gohyakumangoku
rice from Ishikawa Prefecture (2020 harvest) and Aiyama rice from Hyogo Prefecture (2021 harvest).

With a gentle aroma and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel that softly draws out the natural umami of the rice, it deepens the richness of dashi-based cuisine and culminates in a clean,
crisp finish, making it an ideal companion to refined Japanese dishes.

農口尚彦研究所×べにや無何有吟醸酒別誂

農口尚彦研究所とともに、べにや無何有のシグネチャーディッシュのひとつである「鴨鍋」、「山椒鍋」などに寄り添うオリジナル日本酒を開発しました。

異なる酒米や酒造年度の個性を生かす「ブレンド」という手法を用いることで、それぞれの長所を引き出し、調和と奥行きのある味わいを実現しました。本酒は、2020 年収穫の石川県産・有機栽培五百万石と、2021 年収穫の兵庫県産・愛山をブレンドしたものです。

穏やかな香りと、なめらかでふくらみのある口当たりが特徴で、米本来の旨味をやさし引き出します。だしを基調とした料理の滋味をいっそう深めながら、後味はすっきりとれ、日本料理に理想的に寄り添う一本です。

4.Bodywork rooted in Japanese martial arts

Japanese martial arts embody the quiet depth of Japanese culture, where technique is guided
by an awareness of harmony with one’s surroundings. Rather than striving through force,
you will learn to move with natural ease, attuning body and mind to the subtle shifts of each
moment.

By softening the impulse to place the ego at the center of action, you will begin to sense a wider field of connection – with people, place, and atmosphere. Under the guidance of Shingo Sasai, you will explore movement as relationship, gently discovering awareness, presence, and flow.

The experience is conducted in Japanese, with English support provided by an assistant.

3. Japanese Lacquer Urushi
— Discover the Traditional Art

Urushi lacquer is made from naturally extracted sap and has been used and appreciated since ancient times. Through this experience, you will learn its secrets from Tomizo Saratani, a world-renowned urushi artist who has been restoring lacquerware for prestigious museums and auction houses around the world since the late 1970s and creates his own artworks.

Under his guidance, you will also decorate your own piece with dry lacquer powder, shells or gold powder using the technique known as maki-e, which is especially important in Kanazawa and Kaga.

3.漆芸体験

漆は、天然の樹液から生まれる素材であり、古来より日本の暮らしや美意識の中で大切に受け継がれてきました。本体験では、1970 年代後半より世界各地の美術館やオークションハウス所蔵の漆器の修復に携わり、自らの作品制作も続けてきた漆芸家・更谷富造の指導のもと、漆の奥深い魅力に触れていただけます。

金沢・加賀の伝統的な蒔絵の技法を用い、乾漆粉や貝、金粉で自分だけの装飾を施す蒔絵体験や、更谷氏の漆芸家としての歩みこだわりを直接聞くことで、漆芸の世界への理解をより深めることができます。
