今回は、鹿児島の偉人・西郷隆盛の銅像をご紹介いたします。
銅像はホテルから徒歩10分少々、歴史資料館や美術館などが集まる城山町の「かごしま文化ゾーン」にあります。
明治31年に建立された東京・上野の西郷隆盛像は、愛犬ツンを連れた着流し姿で有名です。これは、恩赦後とはいえ“逆賊”の記憶がまだ色濃く残る時代背景の中、軍服姿を避けたかった明治政府の思惑があったためとも言われています。
一方、鹿児島の西郷さんは、千葉県習志野で行われた日本陸軍初の演習時の陸軍大将の軍服姿です。
上野の除幕式で夫人の西郷糸さんが「うちの人は着流し姿で人前に出るような人ではなかった」と不満を漏らし、弟の西郷従道にたしなめられた――という真偽不明の逸話も伝えられており、その話が軍服姿の像につながったという説もあります。
この銅像は、西郷隆盛没後50年にあたる昭和12年、渋谷の忠犬ハチ公像も制作した鹿児島市出身の彫刻家・安藤照によって作られました。
高さ5.76mの銅像に加え、台座1.21m、築山7.27m。西郷さんが最後を遂げた城山を背に、威風堂々と立つ姿は圧巻です。道路を挟んだ向かい側には記念撮影スポットもあります。
写真嫌いで、明治天皇の要望でも写真撮影を断ったとされる西郷さん。そのため銅像制作は難しかったようですが、この像は安藤の知人と「よく似ている」と親族から太鼓判を押された孫の西郷隆治氏の2人をモデルに制作されています。

Today, I would like to introduce the statue of Saigō Takamori, one of Kagoshima’s greatest historical figures.
The statue is located in the “Kagoshima Culture Zone” in Shiroyamacho, an area filled with museums and historical facilities, about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
The famous Statue of Saigō Takamori in Ueno, Tokyo, was erected in 1898 and is well known for depicting Saigō in a casual kimono accompanied by his beloved dog, Tsun.
In contrast, the Saigō statue in Kagoshima portrays him in the military uniform of a General of the Imperial Japanese Army, based on his appearance during Japan’s first military exercise held in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture.
The bronze statue itself stands 5.76 meters tall, with a 1.21-meter pedestal and a 7.27-meter mound beneath it. Standing proudly with Shiroyama — the place where Saigō spent his final moments — in the background, the statue is truly magnificent. There is also a popular photo spot located across the street.
