今回は、当ホテルからお散歩がてら歩いていける、鹿児島を代表する神社「照国神社(てるくにじんじゃ)」をご紹介いたします。
薩摩の歴史を語る上で欠かせない聖地であり、市街地にありながら、一歩足を踏み入れれば厳かな空気に包まれる特別な場所です。
■ 照国神社の見どころ
1.大鳥居と島津斉彬公の銅像
入り口で圧倒的な存在感を放つ大きな鳥居が目を引きます。隣接する敷地には、西郷隆盛や篤姫らを育て、日本の近代化の礎を築いた島津家第28代当主・島津斉彬公の銅像が佇んでおり、往時の歴史に思いを馳せることができます。
2.美しき生垣「斉鶴(さいかく)」
拝殿の手前にある大きなイヌマキの木は、鶴が翼を広げた優美な姿を模して剪定されており、職人の技が光ります。手水舎の近くには、海外からのお客様にも安心な英語対応の案内パネルも設置されています。
3.緑に癒やされる裏手の隠れスポット
ぜひ足を延ばしていただきたいのが境内の裏手です。今の時期は、市街地とは思えない深い緑の中に、鮮やかな青や紫、白の紫陽花（アジサイ）が美しく咲き誇り、心癒やされる空間が広がっています。
■ 「夏詣（なつもうで）」も開催
6月30日から7月31日までの期間中は、特別な御朱印が頒布されるほか、夏の風物詩である「六月燈」など様々な祭典行事が行われ、境内はいつも以上の活気に包まれます。
参拝を終えたら、敷地内にある「照國文庫資料館」で斉彬公の功績に触れたり、周辺にある「鹿児島市立美術館」「黎明館」「かごしまメルヘン館」などの文化施設へ足を運ぶのもおすすめです。
にぎやかな天文館の繁華街からほど近い場所にありながら、日常の忙しさをふっと忘れさせてくれる心地よい静けさ。
天文館へお出かけの際は、周辺の素敵な観光スポットとともに、薩摩の歴史の息吹と静かな祈りの時間を体感してみてはいかがでしょうか。

Today, we would like to introduce Terukuni Shrine (Terukuni Jinja), one of Kagoshima's most iconic shrines, located just a short, pleasant walk from our hotel.
This sacred site is deeply intertwined with the history of Satsuma. Despite its location in the heart of the city, stepping inside immediately envelops you in a serene and solemn atmosphere.
■ Highlights of Terukuni Shrine
1.The Grand Torii Gate and the Statue of Lord Nariakira Shimazu
At the entrance, a magnificent grand torii gate stands as a prominent city landmark. In the lush greenery adjacent to the shrine, you will find the bronze statue of Nariakira Shimazu, the 28th head of the Shimazu clan. He laid the foundation for Japan's modernization and nurtured many great historical figures, including Takamori Saigo and Princess Atsu. Standing here, you can truly feel the echoes of the past.
2.The Beautifully Sculpted "Saikaku" Hedge
As you approach the main worship hall, a large, beautifully manicured Inumaki (Buddhist pine) tree will catch your eye. Known as "Saikaku," it has been skillfully shaped by craftsmen to resemble a crane spreading its wings in elegance. Nearby the Temizuya (water purification pavilion), an English-accessible touch-panel information board is available, ensuring our international guests can visit with peace of mind.
3.A Hidden Oasis of Greenery in the Back
We highly recommend taking a stroll behind the main shrine. There lies a peaceful space surrounded by deep greenery that makes it hard to believe you are still in the city center. At this time of the year, beautiful hydrangeas (Ajisai) in vibrant shades of blue, purple, and white are in full bloom, offering a soothing and refreshing escape.
■ "Natsumoude" (Summer Shrine Visit) Event
From June 30th to July 31st, the shrine hosts "Natsumoude." During this period, special Goshuin (shrine stamps) will be available, and the grounds will come alive with various festive events, including the "Rokugatsudo" lantern festival, a beloved local summer tradition.
After your prayers, you can explore the Terukuni Bunko Museum on the grounds to learn more about Lord Nariakira's achievements. Alternatively, we highly recommend visiting nearby cultural spots such as the Kagoshima City Museum of Art, Reimeikan, and the Kagoshima Marchen館 (Kagoshima Literature Museum).
Located just a stone's throw away from the bustling Tenmonkan district, this shrine offers a comforting stillness that allows you to pause and forget the busy pace of daily life.
When you head out to Tenmonkan, why not extend your walk to experience the history of Satsuma and enjoy a moment of quiet prayer alongside these wonderful surrounding attractions?
