450 years. 16 generations. What surprised me was how much the work kept changing.
For this film, I studied the Kishi family’s Hōkōsho—official service records preserved at Okayama University—to trace our history across 16 generations.
What I found most interesting was not simply how long the family had continued, but how dramatically the work changed from one era to the next.
Battlefields, maritime duties, domain administration, coastal defense, modern infrastructure, logistics—and today, as the 16th generation, I run Kishi-ke in Kamakura.
Reading the records, the people in them began to feel less like “ancestors” and more like individuals who worked hard and lived through their own times.
Realizing that all of those individual lives eventually led to mine was more inspiring than I expected.
It made me want to do the same in my own time—to do what I can through Kishi-ke.
One last note: the mysterious bald gentleman who opens the shoji near the end is, in my interpretation, the 15th generation—my father—casually dropping by from heaven to see how the 16th generation is doing.
That, of course, is completely made up. The AI randomly decided to add a bald man I never asked for, so I decided that must be who he is. 😂

450年、16代。でも、やっている仕事は全然続いていない。
今回、岡山大学に所蔵されている岸家の「奉公書」を解読し、あらためて岸家16代の歴史を辿ってみました。
奉公書は、先祖たちがその時代にどんな仕事を任されていたのかが記された、いわば勤務記録です。
読んでみて面白かったのは、家が長く続いたこと以上に、時代ごとにやっていることが驚くほど変わっていることでした。
戦場、海、藩政、海岸防備、近代インフラ、物流。
そして16代の私は、鎌倉でKishi-keをやっています。記録を読んでいると、「先祖」というより、一人ひとりがそれぞれの時代を頑張って生きていた人なんだなと感じます。
その積み重ねの先に自分がいると思うと、思っていた以上に刺激を受けました。
私もKishi-keを通して、自分の時代でできることを少しずつやっていきたい。
素直に、そんな気持ちになりました。
ちなみに、終盤で障子を開けて現れる謎のハゲたおじさんは、15代（私の父）が16代の私を天からふらりと見に来た、という設定です。
……というのは後付けで、実際はAIがなぜか勝手にハゲたおじさんを登場させました。せっかくなので、そういうことにしています笑
