Yesterday we had an extremely enjoyable tea ceremony with a young couple from Serbia.

They were so enthralled by watching Shacho (Kazuhiro-san) perform the intricate ceremony that they did not want to take any photos, they just wanted to immerse themselves in the experience!

Being able to take part in tea ceremonies with guests from all over the world is also very interesting and useful for me because I get to learn a little about their home countries and what makes them so interested in Japan.

Sebia in particular is a country from where we have welcomed only a handful of guests until now but they told me that Japan is quickly becoming the number one destination and many of their friends have already visited or will be visiting very soon.

Matcha is also becoming very popular in Serbia though they said it can still be a little bit difficult to find good quality matcha.

One of my favourite places to go walking, especially in the wetter months, is the region just to the east of Nanten-en called Iwaze.

Sandwiched between Amami to the west, Shimanotani to the south and Oi and Kobuka to the northeast, it is one of the wildest parts of Kawachinagano.

Here there is a maze of hiking trails connecting these villages to the small mountains of Hataodake, Fuchoyama, and Tayama. The summit of another small mountain, Iwaze-Kyozukayama, which requires climbing a rope, is home to the 18th sutra mound of the Katsuragi 28 Shuku Shugendo pilgrimage that I like to explore.

Very few people seem to use these often overgrown trails and it's extremely rare that I encounter any other walkers, though unfortunately I do bump into the occasional wild boar or monkey.

The reason I especially love this area in the rain though is how thick with mist the trails become, making it feel wonderfully otherworldly!

Tomorrow there is a special event taking place at Kanshin-ji temple here in Kawachinagano to honour the life of famous 14th century samurai, Kusunoki Masashige.

In his youth, he lived and studied at Kanshin-ji temple and it is here that his head was buried following his death at the battle of Minatogawa.

So close was his connection to Kawachinagano that there are many fantastic stories from his life and one of my favourites is about an attempted assassination.

He would regularly walk into the center of the city, from Kanshin-ji, through what would have at the time been forest and a scattering of villages, to study strategy at the house of a man called Oe Tockichika. While the house no longer remains, there is a small shrine like monument (picture 1) at the original location.

As a devout Buddhist, every time he made the journey to Oe Tokichika's house, Kusunoki would stop and pray at a small shrine to Kannon, the goddess of mercy (picture 2). One day however, an assassin lay in wait, poised to strike when the young samurai was vulnerable.

As Kusunoki stopped to pray, the assassin loosed an arrow. At the very same time, Kusunoki bowed in prayer just as the wind blew open the shrine door, causing the arrow to sail harmlessly overhead, striking the statue of Kannon.

His position given away, the assassin slipped back into the trees and fled. The statue now takes its name from the kanji for bowing/praying and bow and arrow.

Although not always easy to reach, tiny places like this can have fascinating and important stories that add to the rich tapestry of the history of Kawachinagano!

Coming up on the 20th of June, we have a very exciting special event taking place here at Nanten-en. A wonderful opportunity to experience a "Nohgaku" performance followed by a delicious seasonal Kaiseki lunch.

Nohgaku is a popular form of folk entertainment that flourished during the medieval Muromachi.

Noh plays have tragic themes, while Kyogen plays have comedic elements. It is composed of the two main elements of theatre, comedy and tragedy. Noh and Kyogen together are called "Nohgaku".

The lifeblood of Kyogen is laughter, but this laughter is primarily directed at those in power. This play, "The Kelp Seller" is prime example of this where the main target is a Daimyo (samurai).

The middle ages are often described as an era of social upheaval which is known in Japan as 下克上 (Gekokujo). Kyogen is a form of comedic drama that brilliantly portrays this period.

Enjoy the story of a 700 year old story of social upheaval.

Ticket prices are JPY 12,000 per person, including lunch so please get in touch as reserve your seat!

Hanayagura is a quiet, corner room with one of my favourite views out over the mountains. It is an ever-changing scene that is beautiful all year round from the vibrant greens of summer to the burning reds and golds of autumn.

At 4.5 tatami mats, it is our smallest and most intimate room; perfect for couples with a taste for simple elegance and for solo travellers looking for a peaceful space before they continue their journey. It has no private toilet but there are public facilities close by.

Prices start from JPY 20,000 per person (not incl. tax) for a half board stay which includes a sumptuous Kaiseki dinner made up of multiple courses of the finest local and seasonal ingredients, served in the room and a hearty Japanese style breakfast served in the banquet hall.

Please feel free to get in touch with us if you would like to learn more!

With the magenta Azalea now fading away, the next flowers to bloom here at Nanten-en are the iris and water lillies.

We have several varieties of Iris including Ayame, Kakitsubata, Hanashobu and Yellow Iris growing around our pond and the streams that trickle through our gardens.

The Iris are a little passed their peak already but the Suiren water lilies have only just started to open in small numbers, but soon the pond will be full of these brilliant white flowers.

Nanten-en is located in one of the most rural parts of Osaka with picturesque villages and an interesting history that is ideal for exploring at this time of year.

Small shrines like Kanii jinja and Nagaretani Hachiman jinja offer some fascinating stories and some impressive, ancient trees while the fields and rice terraces of Nagretani and Shimanotani give a picturesque glimpse into countryside life.

There are also some fun hiking trails that are not too challenging, some of which even lead to UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage points that are part of the Katsuragi 28 Shuku, a Shugendo mountain asceticism pilgrimage.

Nanten-en makes the perfect base to explore a side of Osaka that few people know exists!

Today is Kodomo-no-Hi, otherwise known as Children's Day so in the Irori next to our lobby, we have set up our Yoroi Kabuto, a small but exquisitely detailed suit of samurai armour!

This tradition is a way to celebrate the children in our family, especially the boys, and pray that they grow up healthy, strong and honourable. These sets can take up a great deal of space so it is very common to have just the exquisitely detailed kabuto (helmet) on a special display stand placed in a prominent position in the house.

A full set such as this would include a complete suit of armour, a bow and quiver of arrows and a cloth-wrapped sword. Although just a decoration, the suit is so detailed that it includes all of the traditional armour pieces. This even includes the Menpo, a lacquered face guard which were often designed to strike fear into the enemy (you can just make out the white moustache on it). They are often accompanied by paper tigers and huge streamers in the shape of carp called Koinobori.

The Koinobori represent a legend where a carp was said to have swam upstream against the current and turn into a dragon.

Not only do we have a small suit of armour set up in the irori, we also have several full-size replica suits of armour on display in the banquet hall!

When walking in the gardens of Nanten-en at dusk, our main building begins to take on a whole new character. The orange glow from the windows is warming and welcoming and helps to highlight interesting details within the Sukiya-zukuri (Tea House style) architecture.

Nanten-en is a registered national cultural asset that was designed by the famous architect, Tatsuno Kingo, a little over 100 years ago. There are 13 guest rooms in the main building; 5 on the first floor and 8 on the second. Our final room, the Seiryutei, is in a private annex at the bottom of the garden.

Five our rooms overlook this side of the garden; Izuminada and Tsuru downstairs and Hourai, Sakura and Yomayama upstairs. You can also just see our Hiroma (banquet hall) at the far end of the building behind the bridge.

Despite being surrounded by hills and woodland, we are only 40 minutes by train from downtown Namba and about 80 minutes from Kansai Airport. Sometimes our guests find it hard to believe that they are actually still in Osaka!
