A Little Guesthouse Touka 〜「灯火」灯台下のゲストハウス

This is to share information about A Little Guesthouse TOUKA with our valuable guests and supporters I hope many people visit and become fun of this place.

[English-Japanese]

TOUKA is a Little Guesthouse / hostel located on the Hill in Komorie, Moji, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan. The Japanese word "Touka" means index Light (from lighthouse). I named this TOUKA, because there is a small lighthouse behind us. TOUKA is not only for young backpacker, but also for adult travelers and families with kids (family needs to book room). TOUKA is the place where

I want to spend my life, and want to share this with someone who like the place. Because this is my most favorite place in the world (I have recognized it after travel various places all over the world.)

「灯火」は九州最北端の門司にある小さなゲストハウス（リーズナブルな相部屋宿）です。
海上交通の要所、関門海峡を照らす小さな灯台のすぐ下にあることから灯火と名付けました。

2016年時点で全国各地にゲストハウスがオープンしていて、主に若いバックパッカー中心に利用されています。ゲストハウスで味わえる人と人との交流を若者だけのものにしておくのはもったいないと考え、大人や家族連れ（特に自分がそうだったような片親家族）にも利用いただける宿にしたいと考えています。
（家族連れの場合は部屋を貸切ってご利用いただきます。未就学児童は厳しいかもしれません）

世界の色々な土地を旅して「一番好きなココで生活したい、この素敵な環境を大切なゲストの皆様と共有したい」という想いで開業します。多くの方に訪問いただき、この地を好きになっていただけるとしたらこのうえない幸せです。

交通は便利ですが、実は周りにはコンビニ以外お店もない場所です。ここにあるのは海と山と行きかう船の霧笛ぐらいですが、読書や釣りやハイキングやサイクリング等をして、海峡ライフをのんびり楽しんでいただければ幸いです。

“Haven't seen them lately…”
（「最近見かけなくなった、、、」）

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

Come to think of it, we haven't seen them around lately.

No, no, I’m not talking about pests or anything like that.

I’m talking about the anglers on the long breakwater - a local landmark.

There used to be quite a few people out even on weekdays up until the first half of July...

I suppose a lot of the weekday anglers are elderly people, so they might try not going there, just to be on the safe side..

It must be dangerous if they start feeling dizzy while out on the breakwater under the blazing sun.

So, the sunset from here was beautiful on Wednesday, too.

(It seems our guests took the cable car up Mt. Sarakura and saw an even more beautiful sunset...)

「最近見かけなくなった、、、」

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。おはようございます。

そういえば、最近見かけなくなりました。

いえいえ害虫とかの話ではありません。

ご近所名物の長い防波堤の上の釣り人がです。

７月前半までは平日でも結構いたのに、、、

やっぱり平日釣り師にはご高齢者が多いから、大事を見ているのかも。

炎天下の堤防の上でクラっときたら危ないですからね。

というわけで、水曜日もここからの夕陽は綺麗でした。

（ゲストさんはケーブルカーに乗って市内最高峰の皿倉山からもっと綺麗な夕陽を見たようですが、、、）

“This is... unbearable!”
（「これは、、、つらいっ！」）

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

When I got back from shopping for daily necessities for the guesthouse under the harsh sun,

I felt a bit dizzy from the heat.

When I check the temperature outside the window,

it shows a reading more than three degrees higher than the figure announced in the weather forecast.

So, this is what it feels like when the air temperature is higher than body temperature.

It really feels like being inside a sauna - only the discomfort level is more than double because I'm fully clothed.

Ensuring guests have a comfortable stay under these circumstances is quite a challenge; while we make a conscious effort to be even more attentive than usual, we are very concerned about whether our guests are truly comfortable from their own perspective.

「これは、、、つらいっ！」

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。おはようございます。

厳しい日差しの下、ゲストハウスで使用する日用品の買い物に出かけて戻ってくると、

なんか暑さでくらくらするように思えます。

窓の外の気温をみると、

天気予報で発表されている数値よりも３度以上高い値を示しています。

体温より気温の方が熱いというのは、こういう感覚なんですね。

ほんとサウナの中にいるようで、服を着ている分不快指数は倍以上です。

こんな状況でゲストさんに快適に過ごしてもらうのはけっこう大変で、気配りもいつも以上するよう心がけていますが、ゲスト目線で本当に快適に過ごしていただけているか、とても気になるところです。

If you turn on the TV in Japan right now, the coverage is dominated by the earthquake that struck Kumamoto last week.

Yesterday - Sunday - programs discussing the epicenter and fault lines associated with this earthquake were also broadcast.

Upon seeing this information, the host cannot help but recall a program that aired just 13 days before the initial Kumamoto earthquake struck in 2016.

Whenever this fault line comes up in discussion on Sunday programs, I am reminded of the illustration that was featured on that particular show.

Perhaps because a massive earthquake actually struck right after the last broadcast, the program itself isn't talked about much anymore...

However, I believe that program truly warrants a rebroadcast or a follow-up review to once again sound the alarm for those living in hazardous areas.

今、日本でテレビをつけると、先週起きた熊本での地震の話題で溢れています。

昨日の日曜日も今回の地震の震源地と断層について語る番組が放映されていました。

宿主はこうした情報をみると、2016年に最初の熊本地震が発生するたった13日前に放映された番組のことを思い出さずにはいられません。

日曜の番組でもこの断層のことにが話題になるたびに、その番組で紹介された絵のことが思い出されます。

前回の放送直後、大地震が本当に来たからか、その番組のことはあまり話題になりませんが、、、

その番組こそ、再放送や再検証して、あらためて、危険な土地にいる人に警鐘を鳴らす必要があると思います。

“The extreme of overtourism”

Before I knew it - while I was busy complaining about the heat - August had arrived already.

I recall posting an article a while back expressing a wish for this town to experience "over-tourism," but...

As it turns out, there was actually one day each August when the entire town would fall into total chaos due to over-tourism.

Various preparations are currently steadily underway throughout the town to ensure that the resulting confusion does not lead to any problems.

Preparations are underway not only on this side of the strait but also on the other side.

If it weren't for all the chaos, host might actually feel like heading out with our guests...

But we’ve never once felt the urge to do so.

Well, I suppose that’s just what it’s like living here.

In terms of crowd size, this is likely one of the biggest events in the entire region.

A total of around 18,000 fireworks will be launched from both banks - the Moji side in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and the Shimonoseki side in Yamaguchi Prefecture...
..and the number of spectators will likely be more than five times that figure.

「オーバーツーリズムの極み」

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。おはようございます。

気がつくと、、、暑い暑いといっているうちに、いつの間にか８月になっていました。

そうそう８月といえば、、、

以前、この町にもオーバーツーリズムが来てもらいたいもんだ的な記事をあげた記憶がありますが、、、

実は１年に一度だけ、オーバーツーリズムで町全体が大混乱になる日が８月にありました。

その混乱が少しでもトラブルにならないよう、今、町中で各種準備が着々と進められています。

その準備は海峡のこちら側だけでなく、対岸でも進められています。

この混乱がなければ、宿主もゲストさんと一緒に出かけようかという気にもなりますが、、、

これまで一度もそんな気になったことはありません。

まぁ、地元ってそういうもんですね。

このイベントは、この地域一帯でみても、集客規模最大級でしょう。

福岡県北九州市の門司側と山口県下関側の両岸から合計約18,000発の花火が上がるようですが、、、

おそらく見物客はその５倍以上やってくることでしょう。

“What needs to be done now”

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

A day and a half has passed since the major earthquake struck the Kumamoto region in central Kyushu.

We experienced significant shaking here in the Kanmon area the day before yesterday as well, but this guesthouse appears to be safe.

Many past guests have reached out with messages to check on our safety and well-being.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to you all for caring about this tiny, humble guesthouse.

Yesterday was the day after the earthquake, but we took care of several tasks required of us as an accommodation facility.

First, we contacted upcoming guests - especially those from overseas - to assure them that there are no issues regarding their stay.

Next, we checked on the safety of guests who have already checked out of this guesthouse and are still traveling around Kyushu.

And this!

Natural disasters occurring in succession across Japan. Ensuring readiness for immediate deployment at any time, should the need arise.

「今やるべきこと」

九州の中心部、熊本地方を襲った大地震から一日半が経ちました。

ここ関門エリアでも一昨日はけっこう揺れましたが、当宿は大丈夫のようです。

心配いただいて安否確認のメッセージを送っていただいた過去のゲストさんが何人もいらっしゃいました。

この吹けば飛ぶようなちいさい宿のことを気にかけていただき、心より御礼申し上げます。

昨日は地震の翌日でしたが、宿泊施設としてやるべきことをいくつかこなしました。

まずは、これからいらっしゃるゲストさん（特に海外からのゲストさん）に対して、受け入れ際しての問題がないことを連絡。

次に、当宿をチェックアウトして、未だ九州を旅して回っていると聞いているゲストさんの安否確認。

そして、これっ！

日本国内で連鎖的に起こる自然災害。なにかあってもいつでも即時出動できるように。

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

Tuesday was another day of blazing sun and intense heat in the Kanmon area... though the humidity did feel a bit lower...

So we took the opportunity to sun-dry the bedding and other items used by guests who had just checked out.

Then, noticing something slightly different in my field of vision, I looked up at the sky and...

there was the most beautiful phenomenon behind our lighthouse, which we had ever seen!

It was so incredibly clear and beautiful that I wondered if it was an omen of something...

And sure enough!

「前兆？」

火曜日の関門エリアは相変わらずの日差しに猛暑、、、それでも多少湿度が低い気がしたので、、、

チェックアウトした後のゲストさんが使った寝具などを天日干ししていました。

すると、視界になんとなくいつもと違う様子を感じたので、空を見上げてみると、、、

当宿の灯台のバックには、これまで見た中で一番きれいな現象が！

あまりにくっきりきれいだったので、これって何かの前兆？と思っていたら、、、

やっぱり！
