Japan's Art Islands, including Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima, have become a don't miss destination for lovers of contemporary art around the world. While most people use the local ferries to move around, Ryokan Kurashiki has teamed up with a local catamaran yacht company to offer a much more personalized and luxurious way to visit these fascinating islands. Sail from island to island at your own pace; enjoy a delicious lunch prepared and served aboard the yacht; relax onboard between stops. And at the end of the day, return to Ryokan Kurashiki for dinner and a comfortable night's sleep. It's also possible to charter the boat for several consecutive days to explore even more of this gorgeous region. The yacht can comfortably take 10 people (plus crew). After spending a couple nights with us, consider sailing the Inland Sea on a private catamaran yacht to visit nearby art islands such as Inujima (Teshima, Naoshima) and the charming residential Honjima before coming ashore on the private island of Kujirajima for a night of glamping or stay in the charming cabin with decor inspired by Okayama's denim industry. Textiles, and weaving in particular, attract many visitors to Japan. If it's an interest for you, then be sure to visit Kurashiki and the Kurashiki Dyeing, Spinning, and Weaving Studio. Founded after WWII as a means of training evacuated Okinawan women in a useful trade, the studio continues to this day, taking on both local and out-of-town students and teaching them every aspect of weaving. The work they produce is beautiful and examples can be found in both local and international folk art museums. Ryokan Kurashiki can arrange for a visit to the studio and the chance to learn more about this timeless Japanese craft.

There is nothing like a boat trip and even better if it ends on a tiny island with one restaurant serving the freshest imaginable seafood ever. Platter after platter after platter of everything living below the waves of the Seto Inland Sea, served up steaming hot or perfectly chilled with all the beer or tea you can drink. Pretty much have an on a table! Where does this happen? Manabejima, one of many islands in the region but the only one where cats outnumber residents and the table is always set!

The end of winter is finally in sight which means the best time for sake tasting is right around the corner. Kurashiki's local Morita Brewery will have its new lineup ready by early March, the perfect accompaniment to our delicious shabushabu using locally raised beef. A perennial favorite for guests' dinner the second night of their stay from late fall to early spring. New sake and wagyu--what better way to welcome the return of the light!
