Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine of Tenmangu, or Tenjin Shrine, which has about 12,000 shrines throughout Japan, and is the place where the Tenjin faith began. It has a long history and was founded in 947. Because Sugawara no Michizane, a deity of the shrine, is regarded as deity of study, the shrine is visited by many students preparing for entrance exams, and is also a popular spot for school excursions. It is also famous for its plum blossoms, and during the plum season (around February), about 1,500 plum trees of 50 varieties can be enjoyed in the plum garden on the shrine precincts.
You can reach Kitano Tenmangu Shrine from Ryokan Sawaya Honten by bus without transferring from the nearest bus stop. We hope you will stay at our ryokan when you come to Kyoto for sightseeing!
