Starting today, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine begins its long-standing Tanabata tradition, the Mitarashi Festival, a sacred ritual that has been passed down through generations.
Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, Kitano Tenmangu is one of Kyoto's most iconic shrines, beloved for its rich history and beautiful seasonal scenery.
During the festival, visitors can take part in the Ash*tsuke Tomyo Ritual, where they immerse their feet in the cool, crystal-clear waters of the Mitarashi Stream to purify both body and mind. As part of the experience, worshippers offer five-colored candles with their prayers, creating a magical summer atmosphere illuminated by countless lights. 🕯️
The shrine also features special evening illuminations and offers a rare opportunity to walk through the Stone Chamber of the National Treasure Main Hall, an area that is normally closed to the public. It's a unique chance to experience the enchanting beauty of Kitano Tenmangu after dark.

本日から、北野天満宮にて古くから受け継がれてきた七夕の神事「御手洗祭」が始まります。
学問の神様・菅原道真公をお祀りする北野天満宮は、京都を代表する神社のひとつで、四季折々の美しい景色と歴史ある神事でも親しまれています。
期間中は、境内を流れる御手洗川で冷たい清流に足を浸し、心身を清める「足つけ燈明神事」を開催しています。願いを込めた五色のろうそくを灯して奉納する、夏ならではの幻想的な風景が広がります🕯️
さらに、境内の夜間ライトアップや、普段は入ることのできない御本殿石の間の特別参拝も行われ、昼とは違った幻想的な北野天満宮を楽しめます。
京都の夏を感じながら、心身を清め、願いを込める特別なひとときを過ごしてみませんか🎐✨
