In each suite, a Nishijin textile headboard weaves white and gold threads of varying thickness into shifting shadows that ripple like light across water.

Kyoto’s summer is illuminated by Gozan Okuribi, with Hidari Daimonji unfolding on Mount Ōkitayama, just moments from ROKU KYOTO.

Flames lit at Hōon-ji Temple are carried uphill by members of the Hidari Daimonji Preservation Society and passed to 53 fire beds, tracing the character “Dai” across the mountainside. As the fire flickers against the night, Kyoto quietly bids farewell to ancestral spirits.

京都の夏を彩る、五山の送り火。

ROKU KYOTOからほど近い大北山では、お盆に迎えたご先祖様をお見送りする「左大文字」が執り行われます。

法音寺で灯された火は、左大文字保存会の人々が手にする松明によって山上へと運ばれ、53基の火床に移されることで「大」の字を描きます。

京都の人々が大切に受け継いできた、夏の夜の祈りの風景。
揺らめく炎とともに、静かにご先祖様を見送ります。

At ROKU KYOTO, inherited tools become a quiet link between generations, carrying both the discipline of craft and the spirit of those who came before.

“Tools carry more than technique; they hold the thoughts and spirit entrusted to us by our masters,” reflects Kentaro Sugi.

Entrusted with an ancient bronze flower vessel passed down since the Muromachi period, followed by a nata blade inherited from his master’s own teacher, Kozo Okada, each tool became part of a lineage extending far beyond craftsmanship.

“With each cut, I refine not only the branch, but myself—seeking harmony with the flower, the vessel, the space, and those who encounter it.”

At ROKU KYOTO, beside waters reminiscent of a sacred pond, each gesture became an offering to his master—a quiet expression of gratitude, remembrance, and a spirit carried forward through the art of flowers.

■ Kentaro Sugi | Floral Artist
Trained in ikebana under the Ikenobo school and Kozo Harada, Kentaro Sugi brings a contemporary sensibility to the classical tradition of Rikka. His work captures the vitality of plants and time, blending tradition with modern expression.

■ Haruhi Okuyama | Photographer
Haruhi Okuyama photographs fine art, traditional crafts, and architecture. Exploring memories, atmosphere, and unseen boundaries in landscapes and culture, her quiet lens reveals layers of time and stories shaped by people and place.

道具には、技術だけでなく、師から託された想いが宿っています。

弟子入りして間もない頃、師から最初に授けられたのは、室町時代より受け継がれてきた古銅の花器でした。
そして次に、師の師・岡田幸三先生から受け継がれた一本の鉈を託されました。
花を生けるために鉈で木の足もとを削る。
その行為は、ただ木を立たせるための技術ではありません。
我を削り、花や器、空間、そして人と調和するために、自らを整えることでもあります。

ROKU KYOTOで神池を思わせる水辺に花を立てたとき、私が見つめていたのは花だけではありませんでした。
師から授かった道具を並べ、受け継いだ鉈で木を削り、その花器に花を奉る。　　

その一つひとつの所作は、作品をつくることではなく、師へ花を手向ける献花であり、師に想いを届ける時間でもあります。

道具とは、技術を身につけるためのものではなく、師から受け継いだ心を忘れず、自らを磨き続けるために授かるものなのだと思います。

■ 杉謙太郎（花人）
1975年福岡県生まれ。10代で華道家家元池坊の花を学び、その後ヨーロッパを巡り、帰国後は花道家・原田耕三氏に師事。古典立花を基礎としながら現代における花の表現を追求し、国内外で数多くの花会や展覧会を開催。自然との対話を重ね、花や植物が持つ生命力と時間の流れを独自の視点で捉え、伝統と現代性を融合させた作品を発表している。

■ 奥山晴日（写真家）
1983年東京都生まれ。現在は奈良を拠点に活動。古美術・工芸・建築などの撮影を手がける傍ら、写真作品の制作を行う。風景や文化の背景にある記憶や気配、目に見えない境界に着目し、独自の視点で作品を発表。写真という媒体を通じて、土地や人々が育んできた時間や物語を静かに写し出している。

Inspired by the nature, history, and aesthetic spirit of Kyoto’s Takagamine, floral artist Kentaro Sugi creates a contemporary expression of flowers unique to ROKU KYOTO. Captured through the lens of photographer Haruhi Okuyama, each arrangement reveals a dialogue between place, season, and beauty.

Beyond every bloom lies a deeper story. Generations of craftsmanship, treasured tools, and timeless Japanese artistry shape each arrangement. In our next post, discover the floral world of Kentaro Sugi.

■ Kentaro Sugi | Floral Artist
Born in Fukuoka in 1975, Kentaro Sugi began studying the art of ikebana under the Ikenobo school in his teens before traveling across Europe. Upon returning to Japan, he trained under renowned floral artist Kozo Harada. Rooted in the classical tradition of Rikka, Sugi explores a contemporary expression of flowers through exhibitions and installations in Japan and abroad. Guided by an ongoing dialogue with nature, his work captures the vitality of plants and the passage of time, bringing together centuries of tradition with a distinctly modern sensibility.

■ Haruhi Okuyama | Photographer
Born in Tokyo in 1983 and now based in Nara, Haruhi Okuyama photographs fine art, traditional crafts, and architecture while developing her own photographic practice. Her work explores the memories, atmosphere, and unseen boundaries that shape landscapes and culture. Through a quiet and contemplative lens, she reveals the layers of time and the stories nurtured by people and place.
