Standing Since the School Days — The Red Post Box in The Hotel Seiryu Garden

Ninety years ago, children passed it on their way to class. Today, it still watches over this place.
The red post box has remained here since the days of the former Kiyomizu Elementary School, witnessing generations of everyday moments and memories.

Now preserved in The Hotel Seiryu Garden, it stands quietly against the changing colours of autumn.

The seasons move on.
Some memories remain.

The Hotel Seiryu Readies for Autumn — A 90-Year-Old Schoolhouse and Its Season

Every autumn, the light through this staircase changes. Ninety years on, it still does.

Built in 1933 as Kiyomizu Elementary School, the former schoolhouse now lives on as The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu.

At its heart, the grand staircase still carries the character of another era. High ceilings, substantial handrails, and architectural details preserve the memory of the building’s past.

As autumn approaches, softer light begins to fall across the stairs, revealing familiar details in a different way.

The architecture remains. The season quietly changes around it.

A school designed to stand apart from its surroundings. Ninety years later, it still does.

When this building was completed in the early Showa period, it introduced a modern reinforced-concrete design unlike any other in Higashiyama. Yet rather than contrast with its surroundings, it was thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the temple district through a graceful blend of Japanese and Western architecture.

Its distinctive red Spanish roof tiles, still crowning the building today, have become one of the enduring symbols of The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu.

Bathed in the gentle light of early autumn, the architecture continues to tell the story of a place that has always belonged to Kyoto—while quietly standing apart.

赤いスパニッシュ瓦と白壁 ― 秋の光に佇む青龍

街並みに調和しながら、ひときわ印象を残す学び舎。90年を経た今も、その佇まいは変わりません。
