A school designed to stand apart from its surroundings. Ninety years later, it still does.

When this building was completed in the early Showa period, it introduced a modern reinforced-concrete design unlike any other in Higashiyama. Yet rather than contrast with its surroundings, it was thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the temple district through a graceful blend of Japanese and Western architecture.

Its distinctive red Spanish roof tiles, still crowning the building today, have become one of the enduring symbols of The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu.

Bathed in the gentle light of early autumn, the architecture continues to tell the story of a place that has always belonged to Kyoto—while quietly standing apart.

Obon — The Night Kyoto Welcomes Its Ancestors

For three days, the living and the remembered share the same city.

Each August, Kyoto enters a quieter season of remembrance.

The days begin with traditions such as Rokudō Mairi, where temple bells are rung to welcome ancestral spirits. As evening falls, lanterns and votive lights gently illuminate the streets, and on 16 August, the Gozan Okuribi bonfires bid the spirits a peaceful farewell.

A time when the city glows not with celebration, but with gratitude and remembrance.

Ato Matsuri — The Second Chapter of Gion Matsuri

Did you know Gion Matsuri has two processions?

While the Saki Matsuri draws the largest crowds, Ato Matsuri offers a quieter way to experience one of Kyoto's most treasured traditions.

Centred around 24 July, the procession accompanies the return of the deity to Yasaka Shrine following the Kanko-sai ritual. Without the festival stalls of the earlier celebration, the streets reveal a calmer atmosphere, where the beauty of the Yamahoko floats and centuries-old traditions can be appreciated at an unhurried pace.
