One of Kyoto’s most iconic autumn festivals, the Zuiki Festival at Kitano Tenmangu is centered around the Shinkosai and Kankosai processions. Early autumn in Kyoto.
Summer has not quite faded, yet the treetops are already touched with the first shades of gold. The air turns cooler, the light softer, and the city begins its quiet transition toward autumn. Before the maples burn red, Kyoto holds this brief, delicate season in between.

夏の気配がまだ残る一方で、木々の梢には早くも淡い秋色が差し始めます。少し冷たくなった空気、やわらかな光。鮮やかな紅葉を迎える前の京都には、季節の狭間だけに流れる静かな美しさがあります。

A Special Festival to Give Thanks for Combs 🪮
Yasui Konpiragu Shrine in Kyoto’s Gion district is famous for helping people cut bad ties and form good ones. Every year on the fourth Monday of September, the shrine holds a unique traditional ceremony known as “Kushi Matsuri” — literally, the Comb Festival.
Kushi Matsuri is a festival dedicated to expressing gratitude for the combs we use in everyday life.
Within the shrine grounds stands the Kushi-zuka, or Comb Mound, where old and well-used combs are respectfully enshrined. It is also said to bring blessings for beautiful hair and beauty.
On the day of the festival, a Shinto ritual is first held to purify and honor the combs that have served their owners over the years, offering thanks for their use.
Afterwards, participants dressed in traditional hairstyles and costumes representing different periods of Japanese history form a historical procession. Departing from the shrine, they slowly parade through the atmospheric streets of Gion.


京都・祇園にある安井金比羅宮は、悪縁を切り、良縁を結ぶご利益で知られる神社です。毎年9月の第4月曜日には、「櫛まつり」と呼ばれる、とても珍しい伝統行事が行われます。
櫛まつりは、私たちが日々使っている櫛に感謝を捧げるためのお祭りです。
境内にある「久志塚（櫛塚）」には、長く使われてきた古い櫛が納められており、美髪や美容のご利益があるともいわれています。
祭典当日は、まず使い古した櫛をお祓いし、供養するとともに、その役目に感謝を捧げる神事が執り行われます。
その後、各時代の伝統的な髪型と風俗衣装を身にまとった人々による「時代風俗行列」が神社を出発。祇園の街並みをゆっくりと練り歩き、まるで時代を遡るような京都らしい光景が広がります。

Kyoto under the Harvest Moon 🌕

On September 25, 2026, Kyoto welcomes the Chūshū no Meigetsu — the Harvest Moon.

🌕 Osawa Pond, Daikaku-ji Temple
Known as one of Japan’s three most celebrated moon-viewing spots, Osawa Pond offers the chance to admire the full moon from traditional dragon-headed boats and cormorant-shaped boats, accompanied by graceful live music along the lakeside.

🌕 Kamigamo Shrine
Flickering bonfires illuminate the historic shrine grounds, creating a deeply atmospheric setting beneath the autumn moon. After the Shinto ritual, visitors can enjoy traditional offerings and performances, including taiko drumming.

🌕 Shimogamo Shrine
On the night of the Harvest Moon, musicians dressed in elegant Heian-period costumes perform traditional bugaku dance, gagaku court music, koto, shakuhachi, and biwa. Beneath the moonlight, the sound of ancient music mingles with the fragrance of tea, creating a refined Kyoto evening.

🌕 Hirano Shrine
Celebrate the Harvest Moon at this historic shrine with traditional folk songs, dance, and gagaku music. Visitors can also enjoy matcha tea while taking in the graceful atmosphere of an old Kyoto moon-viewing tradition.

🌕 Kyoto Station Grand Staircase Illumination
