Tucked into a quiet Shimogyo street, Tempura Obanzai Ishikawa is the kind of place Kyoto does best: no fuss, no performance, just beautifully executed food. Traditional obanzai, Kyoto’s style of small, seasonal home-cooked dishes, alongside lightly fried tempura made with fresh local ingredients. Order à la carte, stay as long as you like.

Kyoto’s green maple season is one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

Until May 17, Oubai-in Temple inside the Daitoku-ji complex is open for a special seasonal viewing — offering a rare chance to experience tranquil dry gardens, a beautiful moss garden, and vibrant fresh maple leaves at their peak.

Less crowded than cherry blossom season, this is Kyoto at its most peaceful. Sit by the gardens, listen to the quiet, and take in the changing light through the trees.

📌 Miru’s tip: allow at least 45 minutes. Oubai-in is not a place to rush.
