The second half of 2025 - not the best year for many, but there were some highlights! We were closed off for summer last year and we took the opportunity to wander around, both within Kyoto city and farther out to the Kyoto prefecture countryside and to a Fukui prefecture beach. The first photo highlights part of the beautiful garden around the Hakusa Sonso Hashimoto Kansetsu house and museum.

Next, we started our series of road trips, driving north through the picturesque countryside. One of our trips took us to Kayabuki No Sato, a traditional village. It was wonderful to see so many traditional houses so well preserved.

We took two trips to Fukui prefecture, the first to the truly amazing Dinosaur Museum (with a life size, animatronic T-Rex), and the adjacent Dinosaur park, which is populated with a vast array of Dinosaurs, some of which are also animatronic. The park forest is lovely and had speakers dotted around the undergrowth to really add that feel of being surrounded by dinosaurs. It really was fantastic. Our other drive took us to Wakasa Wada, a beautiful beach on the Japan Sea. I could spend the whole summer there!

The other photos highlight a summer sunset at the river, with little bats 🦇 🤗, an unexpected crossing of paths with some Geiko in the Gion area, a visit to a bamboo forest in Muko city (definitely worth the effort), some summer flowers and autumn colour.

To welcome in the New Year, we visited Chishakuin (our local temple) to witness the ritual bonfire and hear the bell being rung. Many hundreds of people lined up to also ring in the New Year.

The last photo shows Tahlia and Akashi (one of Tahlia's daughters) snuggling up for winter.

It has been a while since I last posted any views of Kyoto, so this is a brief recap of the first half of 2025, starting with now and winding back to winter. Near where we are located, is the very lovely temple Chishakuin, of the Shingon Buddhist sect. Like many temples, the garden areas are beautiful and well maintained. The first three photos were taken recently over a few visits - we often walk through there on our way home. The next photo is from Sanzenin, another temple we visit regularly, though it is much further away, in the Ohara area outside of Kyoto city. The garden areas there are huge and very lush.

The next two photos take us back to sakura time, then the following two to plum blossom time. I particularly like the plum blossom flowers for the range of colours and their structures. Prior to blossom time we visited Arashiyama with some friends from Adelaide, and it just happened to be on a day when there was a lot of snow. We had never seen Arashiyama with a good coating of snow, and it was truly lovely. Though there weren't a huge number of tourists there that day, many had created their own snow person, so I just had to add a photo of one of them 😁.

Of course Kyoto is also known for the Geiko and Maiko areas, and if you walk through the Gion area you are likely to see some. Please always try to respect their space and privacy if you do see them.

The next two photos highlight some of the unusual sights you might see here, such as these two buildings 👀.

Finally, a photo of the boss of our home and business, along with being the chief ambassador of our feline crew, Zowie. He loves meeting new people and he will allow them some petting time, when he feels inclined 😆.

We have been very, very busy so far this year and have had little time to get, however, we did manage to get out for some special events and to walk in beautiful areas.

One of the best outings was to attend the march of the 100 Yokai parade. This was a lot of fun and the costumes were fantastic. It was so popular they are now holding some yokai events at Toei Studio park. The annual fire festival held at Chishakuin is always worth attending (and it is close to us 😄). There are many festivals held around Kyoto and can easily be found via the internet, including the Gion Matsuri, held during tge month of July. There are also art events held around Kyoto, again easily found via the internet.

Flower displays happen throughout the year, whether within temple and shrine grounds, or just along the sides of streets and the canals. There are also many walking trails, short and long, taking you through bamboo groves, along rivers and across mountain tops, if you crave some nature immersion (which we do after being inside for long periods).

Beauty abounds here - created, constructed and natural. There is really no limit to the experiences you can have, but, please be aware that it can get very hot in summer, so if you are not good in hot, humid weather perhaps plan to be here in another season.

Late summer into September, usually it starts cooling down a bit and outdoor activities become a little more comfortable. This year it stayed well into the 30s until the end of September. Still, there are cooler places to go and it means kakigori (shaved ice dessert) is still available. Visiting mountain areas is always a good option in the heat and walking through forested areas is particularly pleasant.

We thought it was time to show how two of the kittens our street cat queen gave birth to last year were going. Tahlia had four kittens and we found homes for two of them, so our cat family grew from three to six! Zara and Akashi are now 18 months old and very playful. They run over the furniture chasing each other and enjoy a new laser toy. The large black cat on the stairs is Zowie, and he is the boss of the house. He loves meeting new people and he particularly likes to head butt them (and us 😁).

July in Kyoto is Gion Matsuri month - formally it is a Shinto festival, but it is also a time of celebration, when the city centre turns into a giant street party on the three nights leading up to the two float processions on the 17th and 24th of the month. Prior to these processions (and parties), the floats have to be constructed and this happens on the streets, in situ. It is amazing to see how these huge floats are put together, using mainly wood and rope.

As a counterpoint to the massive parties, a visit to a Zen temple can certainly bring peace and serenity, and one of the best temples to visit in July is , when the hydrangeas are in bloom. Being in the mountain ranges to the north of Kyoto, it is usually somewhat cooler, too!

Kyoto, a feast for the eyes, the mind and soul, and the body. A proliferation of gardens and museums, temples and shrines and, of course, food. There is so much to see and do here, it is very hard to experience the full extent of Kyoto in a short stay. We have been visiting Japan since 2007 and now have been living here in Kyoto for over 6 1/2 years, and exploring Kyoto from the beginning, and we still find new and amazing places. Some we revisit regularly, such as , and , mainly for their gardens, but also for the atmosphere of these places.

Recently we visited two museums we had never been to - and - both amazing museums, showcasing artists. The Insho-Domoto Museum of Fine Arts was truly amazing, with the entire building being a work of art, let alone the interior and contents. We also revisited and with friends from Australia. To feed ourselves we recently revisited for a lovely lunch (with take away cake for later 😁).

Spring has been a very busy time for us this year, which is wonderful 😁. The tourists have returned en masse and our business has definitely benefited from the re-opening of the borders! There is so much to see and do in Kyoto, that it is hard to even scratch the surface in just one or two days. It is a place of contrasts and beauty, of a very long history and many places which still have the evidence of this history. At Genkou-an temple, there are two windows side by side, one round - the Window of Realisation - and one square - the Window of Delusion. The ceiling above these windows is known as Chitenjo, the crimson ceiling, because the wood used was once flooring from Hideyoshi's Momoyama castle, which is stained by blood from warriors who died there. Contrasts, beauty and history.

Another amazing temple also known for its ceiling is Kennin-ji, with the amazing painted dragon ceiling. It is a much larger temple, with the buildings surrounded within and without by beautiful gardens, particularly when the peonies are in bloom. Of course, there is the blossom at this time and there are many places to see blossom, including Toji and Rokusonno Jinja.

It is also always worth visiting the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and we were there recently when the stunning Peony flowers were in their full glory. Many other plants are in bloom at this time, including the Wisteria, and you will see flowers and colour everywhere you go. After all this trekking around you will need some sustenance and one restaurant to visit is Itadaki, which is near Kinkakuji, where they have a special vegan lunch set.

Early spring in Kyoto - the beginning of 'the blooming'! Flowers are opening everywhere and this is before the sakura blooming. The plum blossom is particularly spectacular for the colours, from whites through to intense magenta pinks. There are also many magnolia trees around Kyoto (even in our backyard 🤗). One of the best places to view plum blossom is at shrine, with around 1,500 trees planted. Other wonderful places to visit in the lovely spring sunshine are to see the fabulous Golden Pavilion, to visit the temple on the mountain where Usui Sensei spent a lot of time and for the wonderful moss gardens and jizou statues. While you wander around Kyoto you may find a giant doll outside a temple, which talks every now and then. After all this walking around you will likely build up a hunger for some traditional Japanese vegan food, like that served at restaurant. Very tasty and good for you, too!

The year of the rabbit. Let's hope it's a lot better year for everyone. We are certainly faring better so far, with our ryokan finally seeing more guests than we've had for quite a while. It is a pleasure to see their smiling faces and to share our time with such lovely people.

Recently we've had some snow here, too! A week before it was sunny and nowhere near as cold. The photos show our backyard and the road in front of our facility under snow, a photo taken around a week before when we were out walking along one of the canals here, and a lovely backstreet in the Gion area, which is near where we live.

We recently went to and ate some wonderful vegan Indonesian food (twice, because it was so good). This restaurant has been added to our list of recommendations for our guests. We are always on the lookout for good vegan food to recommend to our guests (and it's such a good excuse to eat out! 😀).

Autumn colour in Kyoto is always beautiful. There are so many ways and places to see it. Many temples have spent years creating their gardens to accentuate the various colours and forms of the plantings. Of course, the trees are the stars in Autumn. Our favourite place to view the colour spectacular is , but there are so many other places including , , and walking the Philosophers' Path. Another favourite way to see the Autumn colour is on the . At night duing Autumn there some areas and temples lit up, including .

After all this walking around you will need a good vegan meal, which you can find at ramen, , and .ren, which the photo is from, amongst others.
