坪庭｜The history of Japanese gardens is said to go as far back to the Asuka period (592–710 CE). However, it began to truly take shape during the Heian period (794-1185), as garden culture flourished among the nobility.

This later spread to the samurai and merchant class, which led to the creation of the “tsuboniwa,” small courtyard gardens found within machiya homes.

一棟貸し町家｜Many of the tsuboniwa gardens in our machiya houses feature stepping stones, known as tobi-ishi.

Stepping stones in tsuboniwa gardens trace their roots back to “roji” gardens. They were developed during the Momoyama period (1573–1603) as a way to guide guests’ footsteps in tea ceremony gardens. They also served to keep their feet from getting muddy while walking.

Stones of varying sizes and materials are combined to create the paths, sometimes even marking spots where the garden’s scenery can be viewed at its most beautiful angle.

Known as "ishidōrō" (石灯籠), stone lanterns were first introduced to Japan around 1,300 years ago and were originally used to light the paths of Buddhist temples.
Over the centuries, they became part of shrine grounds, residences, and tea gardens. Today, they are a familiar feature of Japanese gardens, including the small tsuboniwa courtyard gardens found in machiya.

一棟貸し町家｜Have you ever heard of a "goemon-buro" bath?

This traditional Japanese bath features an iron tub heated directly from below by fire. Dating back to the Edo period, goemon-buro were commonly used in Japanese homes until around the 1950s and early 1960s.

Today, you can still find echoes of this traditional bathing culture in our machiya accommodations. Soak in a round bath inspired by the shape of a goemon-buro and experience a touch of traditional Japan during your stay.

And don’t worry, our modern take on the goemon-buro doesn’t come with a real fire underneath!
