一棟貸し町家｜There is a famous essay written by a Japanese monk during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), in which he states that “a house should be built with summer in mind.”

Before air conditioning existed, traditional Japanese homes were designed to stay comfortable during Japan’s hot and humid summers. This way of thinking can still be seen in Kyoto machiya townhouses today.

Many machiya were built in a long and narrow layout known as “unagi no nedoko” (“eel bed”), which helped reduce direct sunlight entering the home. Lattice windows, bamboo blinds, inner courtyard gardens, and open spaces known as hibukuro also helped create natural ventilation throughout the house.

Spend a relaxing moment surrounded by natural light and gentle breezes, and experience the refreshing atmosphere of summer in a traditional Kyoto machiya.

「家のつくりようは夏をもって旨とすべし」という言葉が、室町時代に兼好法師によって書かれた随筆「徒然草」にあります。当時は、冬は衣服や火鉢などによって暖を取ることができましたが、夏にはエアコンなどがなかったため、夏をいかに快適に過ごせるかを第一に考えて家を造るべきだ、という考え方でした。

この考えは、京町家にも表れています。例えば、「うなぎの寝床」と呼ばれる細長い造りにすることで、直射日光に当たる部分を少なくしていました。また、表側の格子窓や簾、裏側の坪庭から風を通し、さらに火袋と呼ばれる吹き抜け空間によって空気の通り道を作っていました。

Ink, or sumi, is an essential part of Japanese arts such as calligraphy and sumi-e painting. Traditionally, sumi is made from soot, such as pine soot or oil soot, mixed with animal glue called nikawa.

Japanese sources trace the transmission of sumi to Japan to 610, and ink production later became established in Nara Prefecture. Until pens and pencils became widespread in modern times, sumi remained an important tool for both writing and painting in Japan.

Sumi-e painting uses black ink and its gradations to express depth and atmosphere. At Sumihotaru Oboro, soft natural light filtering through the skylight and gentle interior lighting create changing expressions within the ink-colored space.
