一棟貸し町家｜Have you ever heard of a “ryukyu” tatami?

Ryukyu tatami is a term used for a tatami approximately half the size of a standard tatami mat with no cloth border around the edges. Square and borderless, they have a clean and streamlined look. When using ryukyu tatami in a room, two different colored mats are often used in an alternating pattern. This effect can also be achieved with just one color, by alternating the direction the mats are laid down in. The direction of the weave catches the light differently depending on how it is placed, mimicking the checker board pattern.

The ryukyu tatami originated in the Okinawa region during the Edo period approximately 400 years ago. Although they may look more modern in design compared to the standard tatami mat, they also have a rich history.

一棟貸し町家｜Located a 6-minute walk from the historical Higashi Chaya teahouse district and within walking distance to Omicho Market, the largest fresh food market in Kanazawa since the Edo period, is Kagero Machiya House.

This first floor of this traditional Japanese house is decorated in white earthen walls and rich wooden features. On the second floor, you’ll find two bedrooms decorated in colors with historical ties to Kanazawa itself. The ultramarine blue color, “gunjo” in Japanese, was exclusively enjoyed by Kanazawa's aristocrats and samurai warriors, while the red, or “shu”, was often used as a backdrop for geiko and maiko entertainers.

欄間｜When entering a traditional Japanese room, be sure to look up.

In many Japanese-style rooms, you’ll find “ranma” above the sliding doors. These openings were originally designed in order to let light and air flow between rooms, particularly in temples and aristocratic homes.

As time passed, they evolved from simple, functional features of a house into decorative elements showcasing skill and craftsmanship. Designs can range from geometric to intricately carved scenes.

When staying at one of our traditional Japanese houses, be sure to take the time to look up and see the ranma.

和室に入ったとき、どの部分に目が留まりますか。床の間でしょうか。襖の模様でしょうか。
視線を少し上に向けて、天井近くにある「欄間（らんま）」にも目を向けてみましょう。

欄間とは、天井と鴨居の間に設けられた開口部で、部屋と部屋の間に光や風を通す役割があります。細かな彫刻を施した「彫刻欄間」や、光を取り入れるためにガラスを用いた「ガラス欄間」など、さまざまな種類があります。
それぞれに趣向を凝らした意匠が施され、部屋を彩る装飾のひとつとなっています。

真行草｜In traditional Japanese arts such as calligraphy and tea ceremony, there is a concept which classifies levels of formality.

This idea is referred to as “shin-gyō-sō”, with “shin” as the most formal and structured, “gyō” as semi-formal, and “sō” as the most informal. The same concept can also be seen in the stone-paved paths of a machiya garden.
