Aoi Matsuri (officially known as the Kamo Festival) is a traditional festival held every year on May 15 at Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto.

It is one of Kyoto’s three major festivals alongside the Gion Festival and Jidai Festival, with a history dating back approximately 1,500 years as a prayer for a good harvest.
This festival is known as one of the events that marks the arrival of early summer in Kyoto.

少しマイナーな名所ですが、今素晴らしい景色を見せているのでご紹介します。
左京区鹿ケ谷にある門跡寺院（皇族・貴族が住職を務めた格式高い寺院）で、「谷の御所」とも呼ばれる霊鑑寺というところです。
通常は非公開ですが、春と秋の特別公開期間のみ拝観可能です。
ここの見どころは、何といっても100種類以上の椿です。現在ちょうど見頃のピークを迎えています。
江戸時代の後水尾天皇遺愛の「日光椿（じっこうつばき）」は、京都市指定天然記念物です。
カルタホテル京都祇園からは、市バス7番に乗り、銀閣寺から出発している「哲学の道」を南に下りながら到着することになります。
また、白川通・真如堂前のバス停に到着する203番や204番を利用してもアクセス可能です。

This is a slightly lesser-known spot, but it is showing a truly beautiful view right now, so we would love to introduce it.
It is Reikanji Temple, located in Shishigatani, Sakyo Ward. This temple is a monzeki temple, meaning it is a highly prestigious temple where members of the imperial family or aristocracy once served as head priests. It is also known as “Tani no Gosho.”
It is usually closed to the public, but can be visited only during the special spring and autumn opening periods.
The highlight here is, without a doubt, the more than 100 varieties of camellias. They are currently at their peak blooming season.
One of the most famous is the “Jikko Tsubaki,” a camellia beloved by Emperor Gomizunoo during the Edo period, and it is designated as a Natural Monument of Kyoto City.
From Carta Hotel Kyoto Gion, you can take Kyoto City Bus No. 7 and walk south along the Philosopher’s Path from the Ginkakuji area to reach the temple.
You can also take Bus No. 203 or 204 and get off at the Shirakawa-dori / Shinnyodo-mae bus stop.

Latest Cherry Blossom Update from Carta Hotel Kyoto Gion!

1. Cherry Blossoms at Keage Incline
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Keage Incline is an inclined railway that began operation in 1891 as part of the Lake Biwa Canal boat transportation route. It was built to overcome the approximately 36-meter elevation difference between the Keage Boat Basin and the Nanzenji Boat Basin.

The railway ceased operation in 1948, but in 2025 it was designated as a National Treasure. Today, it is a popular sightseeing spot where visitors can freely walk along the historic tracks.

Around 90 Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura cherry trees are planted along the railway, creating a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel in spring.

From Carta Hotel Kyoto Gion, it takes about 30 minutes by bus and subway.

2. Cherry Blossoms at Konkai Komyoji Temple

Located near Keage, Konkai Komyoji Temple was founded in the late Heian period, when Honen Shonin established his first hermitage there.

During the Edo period, the temple was renovated in a castle-like style at the request of the Tokugawa shogunate. It is also known as the place where Matsudaira Katamori of the Aizu Domain set up his headquarters, and where the Shinsengumi was formed.

At present, the cherry blossoms around the temple gate are in full bloom.

3. Cherry Blossoms at Kyoto Botanical Gardens
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Opened in 1924, Kyoto Botanical Gardens is the oldest public botanical garden in Japan.

The gardens are home to around 500 cherry trees of approximately 180 varieties. Visitors can enjoy Kanzakura in early March, Somei Yoshino and Yaebenishidare from mid-March, and Kikuzakura in late April.

From Carta Hotel Kyoto Gion, it takes about 40 minutes by bus or subway.

① 蹴上インクライン周辺の桜
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

琵琶湖疏水の舟運ルートの一部として、1891年（明治24年）に運行を開始した傾斜鉄道で、上流の蹴上船溜と南禅寺船溜間の約36mの高低差を克服するために建設されたものです。

鉄道は1948年（昭和23年）に運行を休止しましたが、2025年（令和7年）に国宝に登録されました。現在は自由に歩ける観光スポットとして親しまれています。

線路沿いにはソメイヨシノやヤマザクラが約90本植えられており、春は満開の桜のトンネルの絶景が楽しめます。

② 金戒光明寺の桜

蹴上近くにある金戒光明寺は、平安時代末期に比叡山黒谷を下った法然上人が最初の草庵を結んだことから始まりました。

江戸時代には徳川幕府の要請で城郭風の構造として改修され、会津藩主松平容保が本陣を構え、新選組が組織されたことでも知られています。

現在、境内の山門周辺に植えられた桜が満開です。

③ 京都府立植物園の桜

京都府立植物園は、日本最古の公立植物園として1924年（大正13年）に開園し、四季折々の美しい植物と学習・憩いの場を提供する総合植物園です。

園内には約180品種、約500本の桜が植えられており、3月上旬の寒緋桜、3月中旬からのソメイヨシノや八重紅しだれ桜、4月下旬の菊桜まで、長い期間にわたって桜を楽しめる名所となっています。

嵐山にある天龍寺（てんりゅうじ）は、ユネスコ世界遺産に登録されている臨済宗天龍寺派の大本山です。足利尊氏が後醍醐天皇の菩提を弔うため、夢窓疎石を開山として、室町時代の1339年に創建されたお寺です。
天龍寺の塔頭（たっちゅう）寺院である宝厳院（ほうごんいん）と弘源寺（こうげんじ）は、通常は非公開ですが、春と秋の「特別拝観」期間のみ一般公開される嵐山の名所です。
宝厳院は、「獅子吼（ししく）の庭」として有名で、大きな岩（獅子岩）や苔を用いた回遊式山水庭園として知られています。弘源寺は、枯山水庭園「虎嘯の庭（こしょうのにわ）」で知られる美しい庭園です。「虎嘯」とは、龍が現れる前触れを意味し、禅の教えが込められているといわれています。

Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto’s most famous Zen temples.
Its sub-temples, Hogonin and Kogenji, are usually closed to the public, but can be visited only during the special spring and autumn viewing periods.
Hogonin is known for its beautiful moss garden, “Shishiku no Niwa,” while Kogenji features the peaceful dry landscape garden, “Kosho no Niwa.”
From Carta Hotel Kyoto Gion, Arashiyama is easily accessible by Hankyu Railway.
Spring in Arashiyama is about to reach its peak.

カルタホテル京都祇園から徒歩で約20分。少し歩きますが、周辺散策にはもってこいのスポットをご紹介します。周りには古民家を改装したおしゃれなカフェもあります。
渉成園（しょうせいえん）は、東本願寺の飛地境内にある庭園で、 周囲に枳殻（からたち）の生垣があることから「枳殻邸（きこくてい）」とも呼ばれる名勝です。
掲載している写真は桜開花前のものですが、 新緑が美しく、これから池の周りに桜が咲くと圧巻の景色が広がります。

Shosei-en Garden, a detached garden of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, is also known as “Kikokutei” due to the hedge of trifoliate orange trees surrounding it.
The photo shown was taken before the cherry blossoms bloom, but the fresh greenery is already beautiful. When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom around the pond, the scenery becomes truly breathtaking.
