⛩️ I visited “Tensha Tsuchimikado Shinto Honcho Tensha-gu” in Oi Town, Fukui Prefecture (formerly Natasho Village). ✨🌌✨
🅿️There is a parking lot located about 900m from the Natasho Roadside Station, along National Route 162, where the two cedar trees of Kamo Shrine stand.🚙

⛩️Within the shrine grounds lies the sacred “Tendan” (Altar of Heaven), featuring four torii gates in distinct colors—each representing one of the Four “Shishin”=Divine Beasts ((🐉 Seiryu(Azure Dragon), 🐅 Byakko(White Tiger), 🦅 Suzaku(Vermilion Bird), and 🐢+🐍 Genbu(Black Tortoise))—arranged to face the four cardinal directions.

What are the Four “Shishin-ju”(Divine Beasts)❓
Originating in Chinese mythology, these are four sacred beasts said to govern and protect the four cardinal directions of the heavens. 🐉🐅🦅🐢+🐍

Land that possesses the terrain suitable for the four directions protected by the Four “Shishin-ju”=Divine Beasts (high mountains in the north, clear streams in the east, open plains in the south, and a wide road in the west) is considered to be the best land in fusui=feng shui (a location aligned with the Four Shishin-sōō=Divine Beasts) and is said to bring prosperity.

This site serves as a vital location that preserves the lineage of the “Onmyōji” ((exorcist/diviner) “Abe no Seimei”, as well as the traditions and spirit of “Onmyōdō” (the Way of exorcist), into the present day.
Furthermore, the “Tsuchimikado Shinto” tradition has produced koyomi(calendars) since the Heian period; these koyomi(calendars) are distributed at numerous shrines and temples across Japan, including Fushimi Inari Taisha, Mishima Taisha, Kasuga Taisha, Kurama-dera, and Sanjūsangen-dō.📖

🛳️🌊After returning from Okishima, 🚙I went to the ruins of "Azuchi Castle", which are about a 15-minute drive away.
🏯Situated in Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, Azuchi Castle was built by "Nobunaga Oda" over a period of about 3 years starting in 1576.
It was Japan's first high-rise wooden mountain castle, featuring a magnificent "tenshu((ten-no-aruji) (main keep)) with 5 exterior levels and 6 interior floors, constructed atop a mountain 198m above sea level.⛰️🏯

🪨🪚The stone steps leading to Azuchi Castle are approximately 6m wide and stretch in a straight line for about 180m. Because they were constructed using irregular natural stones quarried from the mountain, the steps vary in height and are quite steep; since the residences of retainers like Hideyoshi Hashiba and Toshiie Maeda were located at the bottom of these steps, one can imagine the arduous effort required—whether for them to ascend to the keep when summoned by Nobunaga, or for enemy forces attempting to storm the castle.😓⚔️

🏡🌾Upon reaching the site of the main keep, one looks down over rice fields and houses, with Lake Biwa visible in the distance. However, at the time the castle was built, the waters of Lake Biwa extended all the way to the foot of the mountain.🌊🚣⛰️
➡️On the return trip, we'll take a different route downhill. Along the way, you'll find a “sanjyu-no-tou(three-story pagoda), which was apparently relocated from Choju-ji Temple in Konan City, Shiga Prefecture, when Azuchi Castle was built. Apparently, there used to be a "Noh butai"(stage) right next to it. 🔥🌕This lake stretching out below is Nishinoko (Western Lake).

🔥🌕 ✨Nobunaga Oda was fond of "Noh" and "Kōwaka-mai" (a type of traditional dance accompanied by narration and melody), and it is said that in 1582, he had a Noh stage set up at Sōkenji Temple to entertain Ieyasu Tokugawa when he visited Azuchi Castle.🏯🪭

It takes about 10 minutes to get there from Horikiri Port in Omihachiman City via the "Okishima Tsusen" ferry.🛳️

There are no standard automobiles or traffic lights on the island; transportation relies mainly on walking, three-wheeled bicycles, and private boats.🧐

Even though it was a weekday after a five-day holiday, the ferry to Okishima Island was almost at its passenger capacity. Perhaps due to the influence of TikTok, more than half of the passengers were young people in their twenties.☺️

🍚🐠The "Kotobuki-no-Kai" (a women's group from the local fisheries cooperative) operates an eatery right in front of the boat landing. The ferry from Horikiri Port arrived around 12:30 PM, and since many passengers were there specifically for lunch, the place filled up almost instantly.😓

I had made a reservation for lunch the day before by phone from the reservation-only menu, but this is "island time," so it took more than 30 minutes from the initial payment to the serving of lunch. However, everyone understood island time and waited patiently.😅

🥪Also, although the sandwiches（ebimame-korokke-sando）were only sold on weekends, I had ordered four the day before, so I was able to take them home even on a weekday.
I ate it in the car on the way home and again for lunch the next day, and it was absolutely delicious.😋

🐠🎣“Biwa-masu(Trout) Oyako-don" (Parent-and-Child Bowl) Set Meal🍚
This set meal features a unique Okishima-style *oyako-don*—a rice bowl topped with sashimi and roe ("ikura") from Biwa trout caught off Okishima—served with lightly simmered lake fish, Japanese pickles, and soup.
Since salmon roe (ikura) is only available until the end of September, this set meal is only available until September 30th.😳

🍇I bought the last grapes of the season at the Kakimi Grape Direct Sales Store in the Dainaka district of Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture.🌊
I ate half of the grapes in the car to help stay awake. The grapes were absolutely delicious.😋🍇

“Suiho” grapes are resembles “Shine Muscat”, though its berries might be slightly larger. The flesh is firm yet juicy and sweet, leaving a clean, refreshing aftertaste.

Like “Suiho”, “Fujiminori” is a variety primarily bred from the “Pione” grape. It was juicy, with low acidity and astringency and a somewhat rich sweetness. Characteristics of the Pione variety were evident in both Suiho and Fujiminori.👏
