One of the best ways to avoid the crowds is to visit temples and shrines early in the morning, and we encourage you to spend this time with us.

We will take you to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Chion-in Temple, and other places where can visit early morning.

We would be happy to guide you through the history of them and the culture of the area with conversation.

If you already have a schedule in mind, we would be happy to assist you and guide you there.

From the main building, where the design inherited from the Taisho era(100 years ago) remains

Room 105 is a renovated "Jochu-room" used by those who once worked in a Ryotei (Japanese-traditional restaurant)

The pillars and windows beautifully retain the appearance of those days
This room, named "Skip Floor," has a three-level configuration: a tatami living room, a bed and a bath floor

New Year's Greetings from SOWAKA

Happy New Year 2024!
The year 2023 has ended with signs of the end of the pandemic, and the New Year has begun on a bright and hopeful note.

Here in Kyoto, the rainy New Year's Eve and long lines of people waiting to visit Yasaka Shrine are still fresh in our memories, and the fire on the shrine grounds must have looked even more fantastic.

Kagamimochi (New Year rice cakes) and shimenawa (sacred straw ropes) decorated our hotel, and the shamisen performance and ozoni (a traditional Japanese mochi stew) added to the New Year's elegance.

From Kyoto, where the season of colorful autumn leaves has come to an end and we are waiting for the snow to fall, the end of the year is upon us.

Introduse Room 203 in the annex building, where you can feel the charm of both the main building with its good old Taisho era architecture and the new building with its beautiful modern Japanese style.

The main garden in the main building can be seen from the room, allowing you to enjoy the transition from one era to the next.
This is one of only three guest rooms with an open-air bath in the hotel, so you will have a pleasant time taking an open-air bath under the cold weather.

Avoid the big crowds by visiting two of our favorite spots, including Chion-in Temple, which opens its doors at 5:30, or the popular Kiyomizudera Temple, which welcomes visitors at 6:00.

SOWAKA's Main Building is a restored former restaurant originally built in the 1910's.

Room 103 is accessed from a pleasant "engawa"-porch made of bamboo, overlooking SOWAKA's Main Garden to the right.
To the left, the room itself has been preserved as best as possible; highlighting the aesthetic sensibilities of the traditional "sukiya"-style architecture while touches of modern comfort were delicately blended in.

Whilst being located on the doorsteps of the bustling Yasaka Shrine, a step into SOWAKA will lead you to an oasis of calm and serenity.

法然上人の所縁の地に建立された知恩院より

当館に位置する東山エリアで最も早く開門する寺社の一つで
静寂の中に自然の声が聞こえる朝五時に開門します

三門の向こうに見えるのは男坂と呼ばれる急勾配の階段が
登るのは苦労しますが振り返れば絶景が待っています

数年前に大規模修復
を終えた国宝の御影堂も目に納め参拝をすれば
とても良い時間を過ごせることでしょう

Chion-in Temple can be found ten minutes from SOWAKA, just across Yasaka-jinja Shrine and Maruyama park.

At its entrance, you will be greeted by an impressive Sanmon gate and a large staircase, which will lead you to the main temple complex.

During the summer period, Chion-in is open every day between 5:00 and 16:00, making it perfect for an early morning walk.
