A look back at the construction of Matsuyama Tokyu Inn.
This photo captures the moment just before its opening on September 21, 1991.
According to the original press release, the hotel featured 245 rooms, with about 70% designed as single rooms to meet strong business demand in Matsuyama, the largest commercial city in Shikoku. It also included a Mediterranean-style restaurant, “Pinomonte,” intended to serve not only hotel guests but also local residents.
With the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge and expanded air routes, travel demand to Matsuyama was expected to grow significantly. This hotel was built in response to that moment of change.
Today, it welcomes travelers from Japan and around the world. Together with the streetcar seen in the photo, it offers a glimpse into the city’s evolving history.

Arrival at Takamatsu Port — where everyday island life spills out.
Locals step off the ferry with shopping bags, students push bikes uphill, families head home with the sea breeze in their hair.
This isn’t just a tourist gateway; it’s the daily lifeline connecting the Seto Inland Sea islands to the mainland.
Commutes, school runs, weekend visits home… the gentle rhythm of island-country living greets you right here.
A quiet reminder that behind the scenic views, real people live real, slow-paced lives.

A tiny island floating in the Seto Inland Sea, crowned with a beautiful green-roofed shrine… This is Tsushima Shrine in Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture.
Believed to protect children’s health and safe growth, it has been loved as the “children’s guardian deity” since the Edo period.
The most special moment?
Only during the summer festival on August 4th & 5th each year, a temporary bridge appears across the sea → allowing everyone to walk directly to the island shrine!
(Outside these two days, you can enjoy this breathtaking view from the opposite shore or by boat.)
Many families visit to pray for their little ones — just like a small, hidden Itsukushima of Shikoku
Have you ever seen a shrine floating on its own island like this?
A perfect hidden gem for those seeking authentic, less-crowded Japanese spiritual spots.
