At Jigoku Onsen in the morning, when smoke begins to rise from the restaurant’s chimney, it’s the signal that breakfast preparations have begun—30 minutes before your reservation time, the fire is lit in the kamado stove.
When the time comes, and you enter the restaurant, charcoal fires are already prepared on the tables.
In the kamado (Japanese traditional stove), freshly cooked warm rice is waiting for you.
At the counter, free drinks are lined up, along with sea*onal smoothies.
As you take your seat, you’re greeted by dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, along with fish and sausages to grill over charcoal. On the grilling net sits a small iron plate for making medamayaki (fried egg), and miso soup warmed by the charcoal fire is ready.
It’s a breakfast that gently warms both body and soul.
To finish, there is Jigoku Onsen’s signature French toast. The owner-chef personally grills the French toast over charcoal, and it is truly exquisite.
Enjoy your final bites together with café au lait at the table.
You don’t often come across a breakfast like this.

Rising behind Jigoku Onsen stands Yomine Mountain.
Climbing the trail while gazing at the steaming hot spring source, you’ll suddenly emerge into a dreamlike meadow.
Higher still, a spectacular 360-degree panorama unfolds, offering a sweeping view of the entire Minami-A*o caldera, embraced by its southern outer rim.

The Legend of Yomine Mountain
In ancient times, the god Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto built Yomine Mountain in a single night to hide his pregnant wife, A*o-tsu-hime, during childbirth. The name “Yomine” (夜峰 – Night Peak) comes from this overnight creation. The mountain still stands proudly behind Jigoku Onsen, offering panoramic views of Minami-A*o as a lasting symbol of divine love and protection.

Jigoku Onsen, the only place to directly feel A*o’s magmatic energy with your eyes, ears, and skin.
At Suzume no Yu, hot spring water bubbles up from right beneath your feet, allowing you to enjoy a freshly born hot spring. Here, both hot springs and cold springs emerge simultaneously from the ground, naturally balancing the temperature—as if the great earth of A*o is gently saying, 'You're welcome to come in.'
Why not surrender your body to this miraculous hot spring?

The hot spring source is shrouded in a constant veil of steam.
The source spring known as "Motojigoku" (Original Hell), located in the back mountains of Seifuso at Jigoku Onsen, lies within the volcanic gas eruption zone—where no vegetation grows, forming the very "hell" that gives Jigoku Onsen its name.
Here, a simple acidic hot spring (pH around 2.5, with a distinct hydrogen sulfide odor) gushes forth without cease. This highly acidic water boasts strong sterilizing properties and is said to provide a peeling effect that gently sloughs off old dead skin cells.
Emerging at high temperatures, it is slowly channeled over time into the inn's "Moto-no-Yu" and "Tamago-no-Yu" .
This vivid depiction captures the primal, living force of the volcano—endless plumes of steam rising like the earth's own breath, embodying the raw geothermal power that defines A*o's landscape.

Conversations exchanged across the irori counter.
Full of laughter with a few tears here and there.
"Creative Irori Course personally prepared by the owner-chef"
The unique course offered at Seifuso, where the owner himself cooks and serves local meats, fish, and vegetables over warm charcoal fire. The main highlight of the course is, of course, the dishes prepared using sophisticated French techniques.
But the chef's stories—woven with accounts of the Kumamoto earthquake—are also outstanding and memorable.
The meal concludes with rice cooked in a traditional kamado pot.
A delightful and enjoyable two-hour experience.

At Jigoku Onsen, time drifts slowly and gently.
Almost no artificial sounds reach the ears — just the murmur of water, the soft boiling of the spring, wind moving through the trees, and birdsong.
A quiet, perfect time to melt completely into nature.

Jigoku no Shishinabe – a signature dish that has been a specialty at Seifuso for over 40 years.
The wild boar meat is truly wild-caught, sourced from the nearby Yamato Town, carefully processed, and has almost no gaminess.
The miso used in the hot pot is a specially developed aged miso, created in collaboration with the long-established Buzenya Honten in neighboring Takamori Town – a rich miso that pairs perfectly with wild boar and other meats.
While boar hot pot became popular for a time during the gibier boom, nowadays only a handful of places in the A*o region still offer it. At Jigoku Onsen, however, we continue to preserve and serve this traditional flavor.
Available only during the winter sea*on when the wild boar meat is at its most delicious!

Viewed from Yomine-yama (A*o's five peak side) , the sea of clouds transforms the vast caldera basin into an ethereal white ocean stretching toward the southern outer rim. As dawn breaks, the rolling mist below creates the illusion of standing on floating islands above a dreamlike sea — one of Japan's most surreal highland spectacles

This is the "入浴の掟" (Bathing Rules / Code of the Bath) from 地獄温泉 青風荘. (Jigoku Onsen Seifuso).
This is based on the official version, which reflects the traditional spirit from the Edo period (around 1808) while adapted for today's mixed bathing (especially at Suzume-no-Yu with swimwear/yuamigi required).

"Bathing Rules / Code of the Bath

At the place where hot water gushes forth, people come together—and there, everyone stands as equals.

One: The hot spring belongs to everyone — it is a gift from nature.
--Do not enter with an attitude of ownership. Everyone should receive it with gratitude.--
One: Take your time, and let others take their time too.
--Be generous. Do not rush. Proceed slowly and calmly.--
One: Show consideration to yourself, and to others.
--Be attentive and mindful. Show care and thoughtfulness.
People with physical pain, people whose hearts are weary, people who want to enjoy it fully — may everyone feel comfortable.--
One: Think of yourself, and think of others.
--This is a good opportunity to reflect on everything.--
One: Enjoy yourself, and let others enjoy themselves too.
--Do not get angry. Do not make noise. Do not disturb others.--
One: Do not interfere unnecessarily, and do not allow yourself to be interfered with.
--Maintain a good sense of distance. Respect each person's own sense of distance.--
One: Accept yourself, and accept others.
--Have the generosity to accept both yourself and others just as you/they are.--

If you follow these, everyone may bathe.
Those who cannot follow — bathing is postponed (or denied)."

This isn't just a list of rules — it's the core philosophy of toji (therapeutic sojourning) culture: "Where the hot water flows, all people are equal."
Especially beautiful after the rebuild, when they shifted Suzume-no-Yu to clothed mixed bathing so families, all ages, and genders can relax without worry.Have you visited yet, or planning to go soon?

March 3rd next month is Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day).
The hina dolls that grace our display each year are lovingly handmade by our grand madam — delicate origami creations made from traditional Japanese washi paper.
These hina dolls have been delighting guests at the main building entrance since last week.
