【Refresh and Rejuvenate: The Chilling Experience of Suzume no Yu's Cold Spring】

Nestled in the mountain forest near the spring source, Suzume no Yu offers a unique "cold spring" experience. This natural cold mineral spring flows at a refreshing 14–15℃ and contains metasilicic acid, known for its gentle and nourishing effects on the skin. It’s a sensation that quietly seeps into your body, leaving you relaxed and refreshed.
Here, you can enjoy contrast bathing with three distinct temperatures: hot water (43–45℃), lukewarm water (38–40℃), and cold spring water. Repeating this cycle brings a deep sense of rejuvenation and balance, creating a habit-forming relaxation unique to this experience. The crisp chill of the cold spring alternates with the cozy warmth of the hot water, leaving your body and mind feeling calm and completely "reset."
Unlike a sauna, this relaxation method invigorates your body while naturally promoting improved metabolism and circulation.

"Hell’s French Toast"
The ultimate dessert to complete your stay at Seifuso.
Made with Uminekoya’s bread soaked for two whole days and grilled over charcoal with plenty of butter. It's crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside—a masterpiece you can only taste here in "Hell."

The birth of this French Toast goes back 10 years to the Kumamoto Earthquake. Evacuated by a Self-Defense Forces helicopter, we found ourselves in a crowded evacuation center, where space was so tight we could barely sleep. It was there that we met the Uminekoya family. For the next three years, through stays at a school gym and temporary housing, we bonded as neighbors. We promised to create something together after the recovery. This French Toast is the result—bringing together Uminekoya’s bread and the culinary skills of Jigoku’s president.

End your Jigoku Onsen journey on our terrace (weather permitting). Enjoy a relaxing time with our house-roasted coffee while taking in the views of the South Caldera.

Right now, in April and May, A*o(阿蘇) is in the sea*on of fresh green leaves. The mountain blessings of A*o — wild mountain vegetables.
Our chef personally walks through the fields and mountains of A*o to harvest these precious gifts from nature. Then, with his skilled hands, he transforms them into an exquisite dish.
This is the true taste of A*o, something you can only enjoy during this special time of year (for about one month).

At Jigoku Onsen Seifuso, we serve “Semi” (Cicada), a Junmai Ginjo sake from Tsujun Shuzo in Yamato Town, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Inspired by the life cycle of the cicada — which spends many years underground as a nymph before emerging for a brief life above ground — this sake is carefully aged for about one year in the cool depths of the brewery. It is brewed using contract-grown rice from Yamato Town (Yamada Nishiki and Hana Nishiki), polished to 50%, and fermented with Kumamoto yeast. The aroma is refreshing, with notes of apple and other fruits. On the palate, it is soft and gentle with a clean, dry finish. While light and refreshing, it also offers a subtle depth and richness from aging.
It is an elegant sake that pairs beautifully with a wide variety of dishes without ever becoming tiring. A romantic brew that captures the four sea*ons of the mountain village.
Please enjoy this special local sake.

At Jigoku Onsen in the morning, when smoke begins to rise from the restaurant’s chimney, it’s the signal that breakfast preparations have begun—30 minutes before your reservation time, the fire is lit in the kamado stove.
When the time comes, and you enter the restaurant, charcoal fires are already prepared on the tables.
In the kamado (Japanese traditional stove), freshly cooked warm rice is waiting for you.
At the counter, free drinks are lined up, along with sea*onal smoothies.
As you take your seat, you’re greeted by dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, along with fish and sausages to grill over charcoal. On the grilling net sits a small iron plate for making medamayaki (fried egg), and miso soup warmed by the charcoal fire is ready.
It’s a breakfast that gently warms both body and soul.
To finish, there is Jigoku Onsen’s signature French toast. The owner-chef personally grills the French toast over charcoal, and it is truly exquisite.
Enjoy your final bites together with café au lait at the table.
You don’t often come across a breakfast like this.

Rising behind Jigoku Onsen stands Yomine Mountain.
Climbing the trail while gazing at the steaming hot spring source, you’ll suddenly emerge into a dreamlike meadow.
Higher still, a spectacular 360-degree panorama unfolds, offering a sweeping view of the entire Minami-A*o caldera, embraced by its southern outer rim.

The Legend of Yomine Mountain
In ancient times, the god Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto built Yomine Mountain in a single night to hide his pregnant wife, A*o-tsu-hime, during childbirth. The name “Yomine” (夜峰 – Night Peak) comes from this overnight creation. The mountain still stands proudly behind Jigoku Onsen, offering panoramic views of Minami-A*o as a lasting symbol of divine love and protection.

Jigoku Onsen, the only place to directly feel A*o’s magmatic energy with your eyes, ears, and skin.
At Suzume no Yu, hot spring water bubbles up from right beneath your feet, allowing you to enjoy a freshly born hot spring. Here, both hot springs and cold springs emerge simultaneously from the ground, naturally balancing the temperature—as if the great earth of A*o is gently saying, 'You're welcome to come in.'
Why not surrender your body to this miraculous hot spring?

The hot spring source is shrouded in a constant veil of steam.
The source spring known as "Motojigoku" (Original Hell), located in the back mountains of Seifuso at Jigoku Onsen, lies within the volcanic gas eruption zone—where no vegetation grows, forming the very "hell" that gives Jigoku Onsen its name.
Here, a simple acidic hot spring (pH around 2.5, with a distinct hydrogen sulfide odor) gushes forth without cease. This highly acidic water boasts strong sterilizing properties and is said to provide a peeling effect that gently sloughs off old dead skin cells.
Emerging at high temperatures, it is slowly channeled over time into the inn's "Moto-no-Yu" and "Tamago-no-Yu" .
This vivid depiction captures the primal, living force of the volcano—endless plumes of steam rising like the earth's own breath, embodying the raw geothermal power that defines A*o's landscape.

Conversations exchanged across the irori counter.
Full of laughter with a few tears here and there.
"Creative Irori Course personally prepared by the owner-chef"
The unique course offered at Seifuso, where the owner himself cooks and serves local meats, fish, and vegetables over warm charcoal fire. The main highlight of the course is, of course, the dishes prepared using sophisticated French techniques.
But the chef's stories—woven with accounts of the Kumamoto earthquake—are also outstanding and memorable.
The meal concludes with rice cooked in a traditional kamado pot.
A delightful and enjoyable two-hour experience.

At Jigoku Onsen, time drifts slowly and gently.
Almost no artificial sounds reach the ears — just the murmur of water, the soft boiling of the spring, wind moving through the trees, and birdsong.
A quiet, perfect time to melt completely into nature.
