Today, I’d like to introduce Hakone Yosegi Zaiku, a traditional form of Japanese woodcraft.

Hakone Yosegi Zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft officially designated by the government and primarily produced in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. By making use of the natural colors and grain patterns of various types of wood and meticulously assembling them with exceptional precision, skilled artisans create beautiful geometric designs.

Three Distinctive Features 1. No Artificial Coloring The red, yellow, green, white, black, and other colors seen in Yosegi patterns are all derived from the natural colors of the wood itself. For example, dogwood (mizuki) is used for white, nigaki wood for yellow, and buried wood for black.

2. Two Manufacturing Techniques • Zuku-bari: A technique in which a patterned wooden block (known as a taneita) is shaved into paper-thin sheets using a large hand plane (ōkanna) and then applied to the surface of boxes and other items. • Muku-zukuri: A technique in which the patterned wooden block itself is carved and shaped, often on a lathe, into three-dimensional objects such as trays, bowls, and sake cups.

3. The Secret Box (Karakuri Puzzle Box) The Secret Box, also known as a Karakuri Puzzle Box, is one of the most iconic products of Hakone Yosegi Zaiku. This cleverly designed box can only be opened by sliding its panels in a specific sequence. Renowned for its intricate mechanism and exquisite craftsmanship, it is highly popular both in Japan and abroad.

You can also watch videos of the craftsmen creating these works.
Please enjoy watching them.

“Have you had a chance to see the traditional crafts displayed in the hotel lobby? Today, I’d like to introduce one of them: Edo Kiriko.”

“Edo Kiriko is a traditional Japanese craft that has been produced in what is now Tokyo since the late Edo period. It is created by cutting intricate patterns into the surface of glass. Skilled artisans carefully press clear or colored overlay glass against a rotating grinding wheel, hand-cutting each design one by one, including straight lines and traditional motifs such as chrysanthemums.”

* Only glassware made in Tokyo using traditional techniques can be called “Edo Kiriko.”
* Its defining features are its sharp, precise geometric cuts and the brilliant sparkle created by the reflection of light.
* Many Edo Kiriko designs feature auspicious traditional Japanese patterns, such as Kiku-tsunagi (interlocking chrysanthemums), Kagome (woven bamboo basket pattern), and Asanoha (h**p leaf pattern).

“Edo Kiriko is available in a wide range of products, from everyday sake cups and rocks glasses to luxurious pieces intended for gifts. It is also a popular choice for special occasions such as wedding celebrations and longevity celebrations.”
“Don’t miss the chance to admire it up close.”

We recently held a sushi-making experience at Hotel Asia Center of Japan.

Even though it was their first time, our guests followed the chef’s demonstration and carefully made their own sushi.
It was wonderful to see them enjoying what they made.

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

We have displayed traditional Hina dolls in our lobby.
Hina dolls are decorative figures traditionally displayed in Japan to celebrate Hinamatsuri (the Girls’ Festival), wishing for health and happiness.
Adorned with cherry blossoms, tachibana oranges, peach blossoms, and red and white plum flowers, the space reflects the beauty of spring.
Please take a moment to enjoy Japan’s traditions and the seasonal elegance.
