⁡【Japanese Badgers (Anaguma)】 While driving through the village, I encountered a charming little creature. Although badgers may not be very familiar in other regions, they are a relatively common sight here in Iya.

They don't seem to be particularly wary of humans and didn't run away even as I approached. However, perhaps due to a strong sense of territory, when I lingered to take some photos, one stood up on its hind legs and approached me quite menacingly!

I believe it was trying to show off its sharp claws as a threat... but even so, I couldn't help but find it rather adorable.

⁡集落を走行中、可愛らしい出で立ちの動物に遭遇しました。⁡アナグマは他所ではあまり馴染みはないかもしれませんが、祖谷では比較的頻繁に見かける動物です。⁡⁡

⁡警戒心はあまり強くないようで接近してもあまり逃げずません。⁡
⁡ただ、縄張り意識が強いのかこちらが撮影のために居座る素振りを見せると、前脚をあげて威嚇しながら迫ってきました。⁡⁡
⁡鋭い爪を見せつける意図があるのだと思いますが……⁡
⁡やっぱり何だか可愛いですね。⁡⁡

【The Footsteps of Spring】
Not long ago, we endured bitterly cold days with temperatures below freezing even in daylight, but recently we've had a string of warm days.
In the hamlet, the early spring wild vegetable, butterbur shoots, have begun to appear.
The wild vegetable season is almost upon us.

⁡【Cold Snap】⁡
⁡Temperatures dropped nationwide recently, bringing the coldest spell of the year so far.⁡
⁡In Iya, we had days where temperatures remained below freezing all day, causing concern about frozen water pipes, but it seems this worry proved unfounded.⁡
⁡Temperatures have risen since yesterday, and the snow has turned to rain.⁡
Much of the snow on the roads has melted, but caution is still needed in shady areas with little traffic.
According to locals in the village, butterbur shoots are already emerging.
Spring is gradually approaching.

【Cold Snap】⁡
⁡Heavy snow was forecast yesterday, but the accumulation in Iya Valley was around 10cm – rather tame compared to last winter's harsh winter. Even so, it was bitterly cold with sub-zero temperatures and blizzards persisting throughout the day.
⁡This morning, the snow has stopped and it's clear and refreshing, the blue sky invigorating.⁡Temperatures are rising, so the snow in sunny spots will likely melt quickly.⁡

⁡On mountain roads, snow remains in shaded areas, leaving many sections icy. If you are travelling to Iya from now on, please remember your vehicle's winter equipment.⁡

⁡昨日は大雪が予想されていましたが、祖谷の積雪は10cm前後と、昨年到来した冬将軍に比べると大人しめでした。⁡とはいえ、昼間も氷点下で吹雪いていたのでかなり寒かったです。
⁡今朝は雪も降り止んでスッキリと晴れ、空の青さが清々しいです。⁡気温も上がっているので日向の雪は一気に解けそうです。⁡

⁡山道では日陰などに雪が溶け残って路面が凍結している箇所も多々ありますので、これから祖谷へ来られる方はお車の冬用装備をお忘れなく。⁡

Temperatures have dropped sharply since midweek, bringing the first snowfall to Iya Valley.⁡
While roads near the inn remain clear and driving is unaffected, caution is advised for those travelling to higher elevations.⁡

【Autumn Foliage】
Autumn colours have begun to appear on Mount Tsurugi, not far from Iya Valley.
Though the season is relatively late, perhaps due to the lingering summer heat, this presents an excellent opportunity to enjoy both mountain hiking and autumn leaf viewing simultaneously.

Why not take the opportunity to visit while staying in Iya?

祖谷から程近い剣山では紅葉が始まっています。
残暑が長かったせいか時期は比較的遅いですが、今は登山と紅葉狩りを同時に楽しめる絶好のチャンスです。

【Horns of Susuki】
This weekend has been hot and humid, not suited to the season due to an approaching typhoon, but in the villages of Iya, the ears of the Japanese pampas grass are beautifully waving in the wind.

The villagers have cut the weeds along the village roads, making it easier to take a walk.
Please come and experience Iya in autumn when you stay with us.

今週末は台風の接近で季節に似合わず蒸し暑くなっていますが、集落では芒の穂が美しく風に靡いています。

集落の方が里道の草刈りをしてくれたおかげで散歩もしやすくなっています。

【Autumn's Arrival】
Though the daytime heat persists, autumn steadily approaches with pampas grass spikes emerging and red spider lilies blooming.

Mornings and evenings now feel chilly in short sleeves, so we recommend bringing a light jacket when visiting our inn.

【秋の訪れ】
日中はまだまだ暑い日が続いておりますが、ススキの穂が出たりヒガンバナが咲いたりと、着々と秋めいてきました。
朝晩は半袖では肌寒くなっておりますので、当宿へお越しの際は羽織物があると安心です。

【Repair Work at Ungai】
With September here,
we can feel a touch of autumn in the air.
Right now, the traditional drying rack (hade)
at Ungai is being repaired due to age,
so Ungai and the neighboring Soten won’t be available for stays during the first half of September.
We’ll let you know as soon as the work is finished. Thanks for understanding!

【雲外のハデ工事中】
9月に入り、日ごとに

現在雲外のハデ(当時作物を乾燥させるのに使っていた柵)が老朽化による修繕工事のため、
9月前半は雲外と隣の蒼天は

【Pit viper】
A variety of creatures live in Iya.
Some of them are poisonous, so please keep a safe distance from them if you see them.

This picture shows a pit viper seen near our lodge this morning.
Pit vipers are highly toxic and their bites can be fatal.
If you see one, do not provoke it and keep your distance.

If you are bitten, do not panic, wash the wound, lightly tie the area closer to the heart than the wound, and call an ambulance.

【マムシ】
宿の周囲には様々な生物が生息しています。
中には有毒なものもいますので、見かけた場合は安全な距離を保つようご注意ください。

こちらの写真は今朝宿の近くで見かけたマムシです。
マムシは強い毒性を持ち、噛まれた場合は命に関わる場合があります。
もし見かけても決して刺激せず、距離をとって行動するようにしましょう。

万が一噛まれてしまったら、慌てず傷口を洗い、傷口よりも心臓に近い部分を軽く縛り、救急車を呼びましょう。

【Summer is coming!】
It is hot every day.
The rainy season ended unusually early this year, but for a while it has been sunny with no rain.
It feels like the true summer with evening showers started last week.

Cicadas are singing all day long in the cedar groves in Iya, which is very atmospheric.
It is hot during the daytime, but even in the sun, the breeze blowing through the mountains is pleasant and the shade of the trees is cool, so it is not difficult to feel comfortable.

Please come to Iya this summer to cool off.

【夏本番】
連日暑いですね。
今年は梅雨明けが異様に早かったですが、暫くは雨の降らない日照り続きでした。
先週あたりから、夕立のある本当の夏が始まった感じがします。

祖谷は杉の木立で一日中ヒグラシが鳴いており、大変風情があります。
お昼間は暑いですが、日が照っていても山を吹き抜ける風は心地よく、木陰も涼しいので過ごしにくさはありません。

この夏は是非祖谷へ涼みにお越しください。
