How does a family from Western Australia, 3,000km from the nearest ski hill end up with a ski lodge in Akakura Onsen, Myoko Kogen, Niigata, Japan? A school trip to Mount Hotham in Victoria (Australia) in 1986 was possibly where the family's obsession with snow sports and mountain life was spawned. Since then, Geoff and Tania, along with daughters, Chelsea and Shannon have stayed at some of the best ski lodge accommodation in Japan and around the world in a quest to find the best mix of snow quality, snowfall reliability, terrain variety, atmosphere and affordability. Culture rich Japan was always a firm favourite and it was here in the quaint village of Akakura Onsen, on the slopes of Mount Myoko that we found this funky, older style ski lodge from which to explore one of the best ski destinations in the world, Myoko, Japan. Dump after dump of dry powder snow yet relatively mild weather and a comfortable 800 metre altitude. The longest groomed ski run in Japan, yet short lift queues. Take in a mesmerising tree run or some exhilarating back country while the kids attend the English speaking ski school. We hope you'll stay at our relaxed, casual, self contained lodge accommodation soon and take advantage of the uncrowded slopes and untracked powder lines before the rest of the western world discovers that Myoko Kogen has some of the most reliable powder skiing in the world.

W**e, food and autumn mountain views in Akakura 🍷

The Myoko W**e Festival will bring wineries from Japan and overseas to the base of the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable on October 3 and 4.

More than 40 wines will be available, accompanied by special dishes prepared for the event by chefs from Akakura Kanko Hotel. The programme also includes workshops, hula performances and a prize draw. Soft drinks will be available, so non-drinkers and families can enjoy the event too.

🎟 Free admission; food and drink use a ticket system

Advance package: 40 tickets for ¥3,500, representing ¥4,000 in value and including one prize-draw entry.

Japan's most famous ski village just decided it can start taking your money if you behave badly.

Hakuba, in Nagano, is one of the top international ski destinations on Earth.

Starting July 1, 2026, it can fine misbehaving tourists up to ¥50,000.

That's about $320 — or roughly £237.

For years, Hakuba's "Village Manners" rules had no teeth. They were a polite request.

Now they're enforceable. Ignore an official warning, and the fine kicks in.

To put the number in perspective: Shibuya's new littering fine is ¥2,000. This one is 25 times larger.

It's part of a national shift. Japan drew a record 42 million foreign visitors in 2025, and towns are adopting European-style enforcement.

The message is simple. Japan welcomes you — but it's done asking nicely.
