Suigun Rib Tours are a thrilling way to enjoy awesome views on hot summer days 🛥️☀️

The end of the mid-August holiday is said to mark the beginning of a steady cooling of temperatures on the approach to Autumn. It is all relative though, and we are sure to have many more 30ºC-plus days ahead of us before the perfect cycle season arrives.

One way to cool off, and enjoy a view of the Shimanami waterways, islands, and bridges, not available by bike is to take a high-speed boat tour with Suigun Rib Tours. Departing from from the Onomichi waterfront, the tours make a loop of Mukaishima Island. The route takes in the impressive Innoshima Bridge, towering vessels under maintenance in dry docks, and pretty beachside Itsukushima Shrine, with its red torii gate that stands in the sea ⛩️

You also get to scream as you seemigly defy gravity as the captain does donuts in the open water 🙌😮🙌

Beachside Hakata 🏝️

Summer time is the best time to stop off at Hakata Beach. Depending on your direction of travel, Hakata Beach sits either just before or just after the long climbs on Oshima Island, making it a popular pit stop on the Shimanami Kaido's main Blue Line year-round. Late summer, however, is a great time to enjoy those beach vibes and Shimanami views ✨

Pack your swimmers, take a dip to cool off, and use the free showers (open until the end of August), or make the most of the quiet evening and morning hours by staying overnight at the friendly guesthouse .plus, right across the road from the beach. Here, you can also pick up homemade jams and some delightfully refreshing citrus drinks. Of course, don't forget to try a salted soft serve ice cream, made with the household brand Hakata Salt, on sale at the Michi no Eki next to the Hakata Beach rental cycle terminal 🍦🍊

📍 Hakata Beach
🚿 Beach facilities open until August 31
🛍️ Michi no Eki open year-round

It doesn't have to be all about the bike...☺️

Especially when you head to the Yumeshima Kaido⛵️

A week or two ago, we were extolling the virtues of slow island life on Yuge on Kamijima's Yumeshima Kaido. Well, if you needed another reason to book a couple of nights here, let us present to you Shimatabi Yachts.

Built by a New Zealand boat carpenter and inspired by traditional Polynesian outrigger design, Shimatabi Yachts provides bespoke catamaran cruises around this beautiful pocket of the Inland Sea. With a strong focus on sustainability, when the wind is not quite enough, the yacht runs on solar power - good for the environment and beautifully quiet.

On offer are sunset cruises, full-day island-hopping trips, and private charters through the Kamijima archipelago. Biking the Yumeshima Kaido is one thing, but exploring the same bridges and uninhabited islands from the water is a whole other experience.

Onmaku - Imabari's biggest party of the year is this weekend, Aug 8–9!

Started in the mid-1990s when local leaders decided to merge Imabari's separate festivals into one citizen-run celebration, Onmaku — Imabari dialect for "go all out, do it up big" — is now in its 29th year.

Onmaku is less a spectator event than a festival the city builds together: 16 school districts open it with a ceremonial offering of local soil at a memorial tree, a tradition meant to pass Imabari's culture to the next generation.

Saturday runs through Habari and the Imabari Ginza shopping street to Dondobi Plaza and Hirokoji in front of City Hall, with traditional Kiyama-ondo and Imabari matsuri-ondo dancing, Shimanami Kaido taiko drumming, Tsugi-jishi lion dances, and the high-energy "Dance Barisai" street dance competition.

Sunday night closes it out with ~10,000 fireworks over Imabari Port breakwater, 20:00–20:55 — one of the biggest displays in the Chugoku-Shikoku region. This year's theme: "NOSTALGIA!"

If you're finishing a Shimanami Kaido ride into Imabari this weekend, time it right and you can roll off the bike straight into the festival atmosphere.

📍 Central Imabari: Habari, Imabari Ginza shopping street, Dondobi Plaza & Hirokoji (near Imabari City Hall) — fireworks at Imabari Port breakwater
📅 Aug 8 (Sat) – Aug 9 (Sun), 2026

🎟️ Paid viewing seats are sold out — free viewing areas are available around the park (outside restricted zones)

Refreshing rustic charm at Shimanami’s organic lemonade stand🍋

Omshima Limone is tucked away on a narrow side street just off the Blue Line bike route close to the Omishima side of the Omishima Bridge.

Park your bike out front of the ivy-covered store and enter a wholesome citrusy world of homemade food and crafts.

This little farm shop turns the family's own organic lemons and mikan oranges into limoncello, syrups, and some of the most refreshing lemonade on the Shimanami Kaido.

Pick up a bottle to enjoy a well-deserved aperitif at the end of your day, or order a refreshing cold drink and a tasty lemon cake to help you on your way!

Taking it slow on Yuge, just a short boat ride away ⛩️🚲🌊

Yuge Island is one of Setouchi's quieter gems — a small island south of Innoshima on Kamijima Town’s Yumeshima Kaido.

Here, you can find one of Japan's officially recognized "100 Best Beaches" as well as hidden coves. No crowds, no traffic, just clear water and pine-shaded sand.

Biking a loop of the whole island offers stunning views and some challenging climbs, but there is plenty to keep you interested as you potter around the town and its outskirts, and soak in the relaxed rhythm of island life. Just the thing during the summer months.

A stay at traditional inn Yuge no Yado includes a luxurious outdoor bath and incredible seafood feasts🐟

Early-rising coffee addicts rejoice☕️❤️

Although Japan has seen a boom in high-quality shops over the past few years, a common gripe among jet-lagged visitors from overseas is that many of them don’t open until mid-morning. This can be especially frustrating for notoriously caffeine-dependent cyclists.

Thankfully, Onomichi, gateway to the Shimanami Kaido, is blessed with a speciality coffee shop which opens its doors from 7am 🙌

Say Ohayo! to POUR✨

POUR began as a tiny seaside stand back in 2018, but has recently moved to larger premises on Onomichi’s redo shopping arcade, a 5-minute walk from the Onomichi Station rental bike terminal🚴‍♀️

POUR offers a range of roasts, including some expertly selected light roasts (asa-iri) that are bright, fruity, almost floral, drawing out the bean's natural sweetness. The owner sources specialty beans roasted in Melbourne, Australia, rests them until they're at their best, then hand-drips each cup on a scale and timer so it tastes the same, every single time.

The espresso side runs on an Italian La Marzocco machine, and the café latte — pulled as a rich ristretto — lets the natural sweetness of the milk come through, silky and warming.

Not sure which way to go? The owner is happy to help, and after asking how you take your coffee — deep and dark, bright and acidic, somewhere in between — he will make a considered recommendation. Don’t be shy, as novices are just as welcome as die-hard coffee nerds.

Customers are even welcome to bring their own pastries (we recommend the bagels at Koro Bakery a little further down the arcade. Also open at 7am) to enjoy with their coffee. How nice is that!

The heat is on 🚴‍♀️🥵

This Sunday is Doyo no Ushi no Hi — the midsummer "Day of the Ox," when people across Japan make an effort to eat stamina-rich foods to help them get through the hottest stretch of summer.

The food of choice is unagi (grilled eel), and you will see it on sale everywhere from local supermarkets to the region’s plentiful seafood restaurants. But whether eel is to your taste or not, the marking of the season is a great reminder to slow down, fuel well, stay hydrated, and schedule your time on the bike for the relatively cooler morning or evening hours.

ℹ️ If you're cycling this season

🚴‍♂️ Ride early or late in the day
🌴 Take plenty of breaks in the shade
🧋 Drink more than you think you need
🧂 Don’t neglect the electrolytes
🍊 Don’t feel ashamed to snack to keep your energy up!
