It's not just about the bike 🥾🏞️

Shimanami Kaido is, of course, known around Japan and the rest of the world as a cycling hub, but the six islands are blessed with more than stunning bike routes.

Hiking the trail across the sacred mountains that form the backdrop to the ancient Oyamazumi Shrine on the island of Omishima offers fantastic views from a perspective that can't be had from the bike.

The trail is easily accessible from Oyamazumi Shrine and, although steep in parts, is well-maintained and relatively short. Making your way across the ridge that joins Mt. Anjin and Mt. Washigato, in particular, is an incredible experience.

If you enjoy hiking mountain trails, we highly recommend considering adding this walk to your itinerary.

More than pretty flowers, the pyrethrum fields of Innoshima

Yesterday, we posted pics of the wisteria trellises on Omishima. Although still pretty, the purple flowers are now starting to fade. Over on Innoshima, however, the hillside pyrethrum fields that overlook Shigei Harbor are now at their best.

These small plots of pretty snow-white daisies, called jochugiku in Japanese, are a living memorial to Eichiro Ueyama, who introduced the flowers to Japan. The flowers contain a natural insecticide, which Ueyama used to build one of Japan’s most iconic brands. KINCHO mosquito coils, with their distinctive packaging, featuring a splendid rooster, became almost synonymous with summer in Japan.

In the early 20th century, large amounts of the flowers were cultivated, first on the island of Mukaishima, and later on Innoshima and other islands. Synthetic chemicals eventually rendered the pyrethrum fields unnecessary, but these plots are maintained to delight visitors and maintain a connection with the past.

If you drive to the pyrethrum terraces, please leave your car in the parking lot at the base of the hill, and walk the additional 10 minutes along the narrow (and somewhat steep) road to the flowers.

Golden Week purple haze on Omishima💜

Omishima Wisteria Park is easily missed when heading to the venerable Oyamazumi Shrine, but if you are visiting around Golden Week, it is definitely worth seeking out.

At this time of year, the gnarled wisteria branches release their beautiful purple blooms that hang from around 300m of trellises, which look gorgeous in both rain and shine 🐝

If you are blessed by the weather gods, pop over to the Michi no Eki market across the road. and pick up some local citrus fruits, gelato, and snacks to enjoy under the violet canopy.

August reservations open from today 🏝️

Right now, we are all focused on welcoming people from far and wide heading to the Shimanami Kaido during Golden Week, to enjoy what we hope will be a pleasantly warm, spring holiday✨

For those planning to visit Japan this summer, however, we are pleased to announce that bike reservations for August are now open.

While not quite as busy as the spring and autumn seasons, school holidays and the long Obon holiday in the middle of the month make it wise to reserve your rental bikes in advance, if you can.

August is hot and humid, so we advise planning accordingly.☀️

It will likely take longer than usual to cover the distance, and it is advisable to avoid being on the road at the hottest time of the day. With this in mind, a slow and relaxed approach makes sense. Splitting your trip over two, three, or more days can improve your experience at this time of year.

New accommodation option, perfect for groups and people going hard on the Shimanami Kaido🚴‍♂️

”PREMIUM O2stay citrus onomichi” is a newly opened place to stay on Mukaishima Island, located close to the little ferry that runs between the island and Onomichi Port.

Booking is limited to one group at a time, with beds for up to 8 people. The private hotel has a kitchen, stocked with complimentary drinks and snacks, a bathroom with luxurious toiletries, and a projector with which you can enjoy movies or your favorite shows.

Not only that, the “o2" in the name refers to an oxygen recovery cubicle, which, along with the mini sauna, is perfect for cyclists heading to Shimanami for a training camp.

We hear that they may even have some nights still open over the Golden Week holiday!

Golden Week 2026 is GO 🚴‍♂️✨

One of the most generous Golden Weeks of the year is now in full swing!

If you are wondering how to get your hands on a bike to get around Shimanami at this very popular time of year, check out our post from a few days ago (April 25) ☝️

If you are all set up, we wish you safe travels and a wonderful visit to the islands. If you find the roads more congested than usual, have no fear. Just take a detour off the main Blue Line route that runs between Onomichi and Imabari, and take roads less traveled along our equally well-marked "Island Explorer" routes.📷

We'd love to hear what you all get up to during this wonderful holiday week ☺️

May your week be truly golden✨

An extra shiny Golden Week is just around the corner✨

Japan's Golden Week is a glorious time of year. The cherry blossoms may have passed, but it is considerably warmer, and colorful flowers bloom in abundance as the bright, fresh green of the spring leaves fills the trees.

It is also, of course, one of Japan's major holiday seasons, and a time when locals join overseas tourists to take extended breaks. This year, the calendar has been very generous, with up to 12 consecutive days off work available between April 29 and May 10.

Shimanami Kaido is a bucket-list destination for domestic travelers and overseas visitors alike, so we always experience high demand for rental bikes.

You can check availability here
https://www.shimanami-bike-rental.com/booking?lang=en

Onomichi is the most popular place to rent from, so you may find that bikes are no longer available on your desired dates. If you can be flexible, we also recommend taking a look at availability at our Imabari Station terminal (Terminal No. 10) or at the Imabari Itoyama Terminal (Terminal No. 9), which is a 7km taxi ride from Imabari Station.

Riding Imabari to Onomichi has the added benefit of getting most of the longer climbs out of the way early in the ride, while you are still full of beans😸

There are also a number of bikes available each morning at our Onomichi Station Terminal on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving well before the 8am opening time is advised to ensure the best selection.

Worst-case, there are no bikes available, and you spend a pleasant day exploring Onomichi, or take the 40-minute ferry to enjoy a few hours in the port town of Setoda, which is halfway along the Shimanami Kaido.

Cute Mukaishima focaccia shop now offering tasty vegan options 🌱

The super cute Focacceria Puffer is like a little corner of Italy at the start of the Shimanami Kaido🇮🇹🚴‍♂️

A short distance from the ferry that crosses between Onomichi and Mukaishima Island and easily spotted by its blue-and-white shop front, Puffer has recently added some plant-based options to its daily menu.

Their new Vegano Sandwich is packed with extra veggies and fresh basil leaves, and, in addition to their plain Rustica, they serve at least one other vegan focaccia. On this visit, we tried one with olives and onions, and one with tomato and oregano. Everything was delicious😋

Puffer is perfectly located to grab a bite before you get stuck into your ride, or pick up some goodies to snack on along the way, which is especially helpful for vegan riders🥖

If you are riding in the other direction, you can pop by and enjoy a cheeky aperitivo in the afternoon sun at the end of your ride from Imabari. Just remember that you will have to walk your bike the short distance to the ferry back to Onomichi if you imbibe any alcohol🍹
