Before you climb to Innoshima Suigun-jo, the castle museum of the Murakami "pirate" clan, look for the little pink awning beside the 7-Eleven at the foot of the hill. Takoyaki Sora (たこ焼 そら) is a one-window stand serving takoyaki octopus balls　and yakisoba fried noodles to cyclists, locals, and anyone heading up to the castle.

The takoyaki batter is an original Osaka-style blend, rich with dashi broth and soft in the middle, finished with the shop's own sauce. Regulars swear by the spicy sauce topped with karashi mayo (Japanese mustard mayonnaise), so try that if you like a little heat.

Grab a pack, drop it in your basket, and seek out a spot with a castle view. The owner loves a chat over the counter, so a smile and a "konnichiwa" go a long way.

SEE COMMENTS FOR UPDATE REGARDING TYPHOON #30🌀

The Shimanami Kaido's biggest cycling event takes place this Sunday, October 25. More of a cycling festival than a race, around 4,000 riders will head out and back around the islands on eight different courses.

The routes will be more congested than usual, so we ask visitors to be patient and stay aware of their surroundings. We hope you enjoy the lively, festive atmosphere over the weekend.

For one autumn evening every year, hundreds of local volunteers line Onomichi's hillside lanes, temple grounds, and waterfront with thousands of candlelit lanterns.

Onomichi is picturesque at any time, but with thousands of lanterns illuminating 26 locations across the city, it looks extra 😍 on this special evening.

This year’s autumn Cycle Ship season - 16 special days during October and November when ferries link the islands of the Shimanami Kaido, just like in the days of yore - is now underway 🏝️

📣WHAT
Ferry services link Onomichi and Imabari with ports on the Shimanami Kaido islands: Ikuchijima (Setoda Port), Omishima (Inokuchi Port), Hakata Island (Edagoe Port), and Oshima (Sh*tadami Port). Plus, you can roll on and roll off your bikes with zero stress or hassle.

Limited to 16 Saturdays and Sundays during October and November.

Thanks to these island-hopping ferry services, visitors of all abilities can choose their own adventure and explore our beautiful islands, both on and off the famous “Blue Line.”

On the Shimanami Kaido, every road leads to the sea 🚴‍♀️ 🌊

Autumn is when the Shimanami Kaido shines brightest. The summer haze has lifted, the Seto Inland Sea turns a deep, glassy blue, and the roadside susuki pampas grass catches the low afternoon light.

Follow the blue line and let the islands set the pace. Some roads climb, some drop straight toward the water, and all of them feel better in a light jacket than a sweat-soaked T-shirt.

From late October, mikan (mandarin oranges) start ripening on the island hillsides. Pull over at a roadside stand, buy a bag for a few hundred yen, and enjoy a couple with a view like this.

Reach for the sky on the Hill of Hope 🙌

The Hill of Hope (Mirai Shin no Oka, 未来心の丘) is an unexpected wonder along the Shimanami Kaido. Halfway along the route in Setoda on Ikuchijima Island, a hillside behind Kosanji Temple has become a 5,000-square-meter garden of gleaming white marble✨

Sculptor Itto Kuetani, a native of Hiroshima's Sera area, spent 12 years creating it from around 3,000 tons of marble quarried in Carrara, Italy, where he keeps his studio, and shipped here by container. Climb through its stepped plazas and towering monoliths, and you'll find yourself gazing out over citrus groves and the Seto Inland Sea🌿

The hill sits within the grounds of Kosanji Temple, built in 1936 by a businessman-turned-monk in honor of his mother and modeled on famous temples from across Japan. Park your bike at the end of Setoda's Shiomachi shopping street, and allow at least an hour for the temple and hill together.

January bike rental reservations are now open 🚲🍊

Start the new year on two wheels. Winter on the Shimanami Kaido brings quiet roads, crisp air, and the sweetest time of year for mikan, Japan's beloved mandarin oranges.

You'll find them piled high at local markets and roadside stalls all along the route, often sold by the bag for a few hundred yen, and they make the perfect pocket-sized snack between bridges.

Family-run, local, kid-friendly pizza joint on Innoshima 🍕

Pizza Cafe Tsubasa on Innoshima is one of the Shimanami's best-kept secrets. The owner's inspiration was her son, who loved pizza when he was little. Determined to find the perfect pizza, she went all the way to Kumamoto in Kyushu to perfect the craft. She developed her own custom cheese blend and every pizza is fired to order in a stone kiln. Chewy centers, crisp edges, and simply delicious Italian tomato sauce. Everything made with care.

There's a spacious kids' area, an eye-watering hot sauce collection to customize your slice, and karaoke for the evenings. Don't leave without trying the house pudding, also named after Tsubasa.

Heading onward to the Yumeshima Kaido in Kamijima Town? Tsubasa is perfectly placed before you catch the short Ikina Ferry from Nagasaki Pier in Habu across to Tateishi Port on Ikina Island — fuelled up and ready for the next stretch.

The Setoda ferry from Onomichi Port takes you right to the heart of Japan's top bike route in less than an hour. From Setoda Port you can bike the second half of the route to Imabari, cruise the pretty coastline, taking in, Lemon Valley and the impressive Tatara Bridge, or just potter around the picturesque town before heading back to on the last ferry back to Onomichi (at 5pm!)⛴️🚴‍♀️
