Hida Takayama | Edo-period Mountain Town
飛驒高山三町古街 從江戶時代延續至今的山城風景

In the mountains of central Japan lies the preserved old town of Takayama.

Within the Sanmachi Suji district, rows of wooden machiya townhouses remain as they were in the Edo period.

Because of its high-quality timber, the town was once placed under direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate — shaping a culture built by craftsmen and merchants.

Today, sake breweries, miso shops, and Hida beef restaurants line the narrow streets.

Not merely a tourist destination,
but a living town that has continued for centuries.

【Takayama Jinya 高山陣屋】

Takayama Jinya served as the administrative headquarters of a Tokugawa shogunate direct territory during the Edo period.

From the 17th century, the Hida region was placed under direct control due to its valuable timber resources.
The Jinya managed:

– Tax collection
– Judicial proceedings
– Official administration
– Rice storage and records

Its architecture reflects hierarchy and order.
Tatami size indicates rank.
Room progression defines authority.
Circulation emphasizes control.

Most Jinya buildings across Japan were dismantled after the Meiji Restoration.
Takayama Jinya remains the only fully preserved magistrate office of its kind.

📍 1-5 Hachiken-machi, Takayama, Gifu
🚶 10-minute walk from JR Takayama Station
🕒 8:45–17:00 (seasonal changes possible)
🎟 Adult approx. ¥440
⏳ 40–60 minutes recommended

A rare physical record of Edo-period local governance.

Kurane — The Origin of Its Name

In the ancient castle town of Hida Takayama,
time does not pass — it lingers.

Streets laid in quiet order,
wooden lattices guarding whispered histories,
festival drums that wander through the seasons like distant thunder —
here, the past is not a memory confined to books,
but a presence that breathes among the living.

From this enduring stillness, the name Kurane was born.

Kura — the storehouse.
A keeper of years.
A guardian of commerce, of hearth, of unspoken vows.
Through winter’s frost and summer’s rain,
it stands — steadfast, unboastful —
holding within its walls the weight of remembrance.

Ne — the sound.
Not seen, yet felt.
The footfall upon stone.
The wind that moves beneath the eaves.
The fading echo of celebration carried into twilight.

Sound vanishes into air,
yet in the heart it remains —
a resonance long after silence falls.

Thus is Kurane named:
for a house that keeps time as a kura keeps its treasures,
and leaves within each traveler
a gentle echo of what once was heard.

In this castle town where centuries softly endure,
may history rest,
and may its quiet music follow you home.

Kurane
Where time is kept,
and silence finds its voice.

In the old streets of Takayama,
a Hida guardian stands at our entrance.
Carved by a local craftsman,
now returned to land once linked to his family.
在高山的古老街道上,
飛驒守護者立於門前。
出自在地匠人之手,
如今回到曾與其家族相連的土地。
