Going to Tokyo this autumn? Here’s what to wear in October + November 🍁
The biggest tip for Tokyo in fall: layers. Daytime can still feel mild, while mornings and evenings can get cooler, especially later in November, so pieces you can easily add or remove are the easiest way to stay comfortable. Pasted text

📍 Around Ikebukuro Station West Exit, Toshima City
Colourful costumes, energetic yosakoi dancing and around 100 participating teams take over Ikebukuro. Additional venues around Otsuka and Sugamo operate on 11 October. Viewing is free.

🌼 Cosmos Festival 2026
📅 12 September–25 October 2026
📍 Showa Kinen Park, Tachikawa
Explore seasonal flower fields, including the park’s yellow Lemon Bright cosmos. Bloom conditions change throughout the season, so it’s worth checking the park’s latest flower update before visiting.

🏮 Kawagoe Festival
📅 17–18 October 2026
📍 Central Kawagoe, Saitama
A great autumn day trip from Tokyo, with elaborate festival floats, traditional music and lantern-lit streets. The evening Yoiyama festivities are scheduled for 17 October, with further float events on the 18th.

Japan’s tax-free shopping rules are changing 🇯🇵🛍️
Travelling to Japan from 1 November 2026? Save this before you shop.
Under the new system, eligible visitors will:
🛍️ Shop at a participating tax-free store
💴 Pay the tax-inclusive price first
🧾 Keep their passport and purchases accessible
✈️ Complete the tax-free departure procedure before checking luggage
💳 Receive the consumption-tax equivalent back after Customs confirmation
The minimum purchase remains ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day, and purchases must be taken out of Japan within 90 days.
TFS travel tip: allow some extra time at the airport and don’t pack tax-free purchases somewhere you can’t access before completing the procedure.
