ベートーベンの「第九」アジア初演の地が四国にあることはご存知でしょうか？

Did you know that Shikoku was the venue for the Asian premiere of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony?

第一次世界大戦で旧日本軍の捕虜となったドイツ兵が収容されていた俘虜収容所が徳島県鳴門市にありました。ドイツ本国からの引き揚げがなかなか進まずに日本の収容所での暮らしが長引く中で第九の演奏会が開かれたようです。

There was a prisoner-of-war camp in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. It housed German soldiers who had been captured by the former Japanese army during World War I. As their repatriation to Germany proved slow to materialise, and life in the camp dragged on, a concert featuring the Ninth Symphony was held.

そんなドイツ兵の中に、本国へは帰らずに日本に残ったひともいました。そして彼は日本人女性と知り合い、結婚を約束します。しかし、第一次世界大戦で日本とドイツは死闘を繰り広げた敵国同士。女性の家族は敵兵との結婚を許しません。結局、その日本人女性は家族の反対を振り払い、ドイツ兵男性と駆け落ちをしました。

Among those German soldiers, one chose to remain in Japan rather than return home. He met a Japanese woman and promised to marry her. However, Japan and Germany had fought a fierce battle during World War I. Her family would not allow her to marry an enemy soldier. In the end, she defied her family’s opposition and eloped with the German soldier.

その孫にあたる女性が、自身のルーツを探るべく来日し、若葉屋に宿泊されました。「いよいよ、私の親戚とご先祖様に会いに、日本へ行けるタイミングが来たのよ！」

A woman who is the granddaughter of that couple came to Japan to trace her roots and stayed at Wakabaya. ‘At last, the time has come for me to go to Japan to meet my relatives and ancestors!’

そんな彼女もすでに70歳ちかい年齢になっています。彼女のおばあちゃんの故郷である小さな町まで、高松からは新幹線や普通列車を何度も乗り継いで約6時間の旅。私がスマホで乗り継ぎ行程を調べ、書き出したメモを彼女に手渡しました。彼女は鳴門で買ったであろうお土産を私たちにくれました。

She is now approaching 70. The journey from Takamatsu to the small town where her grandmother grew up takes about six hours, involving several changes between the Shinkansen and local trains. I handed her a handwritten train connection I’d looked up on my mobile app. And she gave us some souvenirs she’d bought in Naruto.

「ごめんなさい、私たち、お部屋の紙の窓を壊してしまったの」
“Sorry, we’ve broken the paper window in the room.”

フランスからのお客さんがチェックアウトのとき、申し訳なさそうにそう言うので「いえいえ、全然大丈夫ですよ。Bonne journée !（よい一日を）」と笑顔でお見送りしました。
When our guest from France apologised as they were checking out, I smiled and said, “No problem at all. Bonne journée!”

障子は紙でできているので、こうして破れることがあります。その破れたところのマスだけをカッターで切り目を入れ、枠を水で濡らせば簡単に切り取ることができます。あとは補修用の障子紙を切ってのりで貼り合わせるだけです。
As shoji screens, paper windows are made of paper, they can tear like this. Simply cut along the torn section with a craft knife, then dampen the frame with water to make it easy to remove. All that remains is to cut a piece of repair paper to size and stick it in place with glue.

障子は指でつけば子どもでも簡単に破ってしまいます。それでも、私はこの障子という日本独特のもろい建具を不良品だとは思いません。破れやすくても、こうやって素人が安く簡単に直せるのですから。上等な建具です。
Even a child can easily tear shoji screens with their fingers. Even so, I do not consider these fragile, Japanese unique screens to be defective. After all, although they tear easily, they can be repaired cheaply and easily by an amateur like me. They are perfect pieces of craftsmanship.

「高松に移り住んで、小さな和食屋をやってみたいんです」
と、若葉屋の居間でお話ししていたのが2年前。その翌年、高松への移住が決まって入居前日に再び、若葉屋にご宿泊いただきました。

そして昨日、右近どき さんが若葉屋にひょっこり、お越しになりました。このGW期間中に高松市内で京料理のお店を開店されます。

ゲストハウスは日々、旅人さんたちとの一期一会の出会いの場。それでもときどきこうして、チェックアウト後の「それから」に触れられることも。

‘I’d like to move to Takamatsu and run a small Japanese restaurant,’
he told me in the living room at Guest House Wakabaya two years ago. The next year, having decided to move to Takamatsu, he stayed with us again the day before moving into his new home.

And then yesterday, Ukon Doki popped in to Wakabaya. He is opening a Kyoto-style restaurant in Takamatsu very soon.

A guesthouse is a place for once-in-a-lifetime encounters with travellers every day. Yet, occasionally, as in this case, we hear news of them after they’ve checked out.

「小豆島で売っていたので、買ってきました」と、今夜のお客さん。
若葉屋の共有冷蔵庫のドアポケットには、青々としたパセリとネギが生えています。
私物なので、ちゃんとお名前シールをパセリに直貼り。

ちなみに、隣の麦茶（香川県産）はどうぞご自由にお飲みくださいませ。

‘We saw them on sale on Shodoshima Island, so bought some,’ said tonight’s guest.
Fresh parsley and spring onions are in Wakabaya’s shared fridge.
As these are their personal items, they stuck a name label directly onto the parsley.

By the way, please feel free to help yourself to our local barley tea next to them.

若葉屋のお客さん、特に四国遍路を結願して高野山へ向かわれる方によくご案内するルートがひとつ、2028年3月末をもって消えることになりました。

One of the routes we often recommend to Wakabaya's guests—particularly those who have completed the Shikoku Pilgrimage and are heading to Kōyasan—will disappear at the end of March 2028.

3月20日からの3日間、若葉屋は通常営業をお休みして、私たち親子は小豆島で3日間開催されていたオリエンテーリング大会に出場してきました。
For three days from 20 March, Wakabaya was closed for regular business, and my sons and I took part in an orienteering competition held over three days on Shodoshima Island.

長男・幸太郎は前回、出場した大会で初めてひとりでコースを完走できて、今回の小豆島での大会でもちゃんとひとりで完走できました。成績もなかなかよかったです。
Our eldest son, Kotaro, completed the course on his own for the first time, and he did the same at this competition on Shodoshima. His result was good.

そして次男・喜一も私と一緒に山に入って、地図と実際の地形をじっくりしっかり読み込んで自分で正しいコースを選べるように、練習しています。
And our second son, Kiichi, also goes into the mountains with me and practices so that he can carefully study the map and the actual terrain and choose the correct route on his own.

実は大会期間中、若葉屋では大会の参加者に限って宿泊をお受けしていました。その中に高校生オリエンティアがいました。しかも、日本オリエンテーリング協会指定の強化選手! 幸太郎と喜一はこの「速いお兄さん」と一緒に、自分たちのレースのふり返りをしてもらいました。年が近くてハイレベルな先輩の机上レッスンを受けられたのは、貴重な経験です。
Actually, during the competition, Wakabaya only accepted bookings from participants. Among them was a high school orienteer, and he was designated an elite athlete by the Japan Orienteering Association! Kotaro and Kiichi asked this ‘fast big brother’ to review their race together. Receiving theoretical instruction from a senior runner was a valuable experience for them.

次の日。チェックアウト後のテーブルにはこれまたすてきなメッセージが残されていました。オリエンティアは熱い仲間意識でつながっています。またどこかのテレイン（オリエンテーリング会場）でお会いしましょう。
The next day. After he left, we found a lovely message waiting on the table. Orienteering athletes are bound together by a strong sense of camaraderie. Let’s meet again at an orienteering terrain somewhere.

北欧はフィンランド🇫🇮、ヘルシンキの高校生たちと私の母校である香川県立三木高校🇯🇵の高校生たちとの交流が3年前から続いていて、その宿泊先として若葉屋をご利用いただきました。
An exchange program between high school students in Helsinki, Finland🇫🇮 and Kagawa Prefectural Miki High School🇯🇵 students has been ongoing for the past three years, and Wakabaya has been used as their lodging.

このフィンランド御一行、Finnair（フィンエアー）で14時間飛んで羽田で入国、JALで同日乗り継いで高松空港着、その日の夜には香川県木田郡三木町周辺でホームステイなのです（先生たちは若葉屋宿泊)。3泊のホームステイを終えて、学生さんたちも若葉屋に移って2泊。滞在中は三木高校と香川大学で交流、屋島観光、高松城跡から高松中央商店街、栗林公園へのまち歩き。以上です。若葉屋をチェックアウトしたら、その日のフライトで羽田へ、そして帰国🇫🇮。浅草や京都どころか、直島もなし！ なんとストイックな、完全なる国際交流プログラム！
This Finnish group flew 14 hours on Finnair to Haneda, Tokyo, cleared immigration, then connected on JAL the same day to arrive at Takamatsu Airport. That very night, they began their homestays around Miki Town, Kagawa (the teachers stayed at Wakabaya). After three nights of homestays, the students also moved to Wakabaya for two nights. During the stay, exchange activities at Miki High School and Kagawa University, sightseeing at Yashima, and a walking tour from Takamatsu Castle to Ritsurin Garden via Takamatsu Shopping Arcades. That's it. After checking out of Wakabaya, they flew back to Haneda that same day and returned home 🇫🇮. No Asakusa, no Kyoto, not even Naoshima! What a stoic, utterly pure international exchange program!

先生がおっしゃるには「フィンランドの学生たちが国際交流するといったら、たいていはヨーロッパ域内で、暮らしとか文化とかそんなに大きくは変わらない。でも、日本はフィンランドと全然違う。その日本のごく普通の高校生たちと交流して、そのごく普通の家庭でホームステイする。素晴らしい経験じゃないか！」と熱い。
The teacher passionately explained, “When Finnish students engage in international exchange, it's usually within Europe, where lifestyles and cultures aren't that different. But Japan is completely different from Finland. To interact with ordinary Japanese high school students and stay with them in their ordinary homes—isn't that a wonderful experience!”

我が家へのお土産に、ムーミンの反射板と、学校オリジナルのトートバッグをいただきました。ムーミンのむっつりした表情も、バッグのなんともいえない笑みも、じわじわきます。
As souvenirs for my family, we received a Moomin reflector and a school-original tote bag. Both Moomin's sullen expression and mysterious smile on the bag grow on me.
