Every winter, an adorable little star is born at the Shinhotaka Ropeway. Did you know? 👀

Meet Nishiho-kun!
He’s a cute snowman character who appears when snow begins to pile up around the Shinhotaka Ropeway. ❄️
At AlpScape, the rooftop observation deck at Nishihotakaguchi Station, you can take commemorative photos with Nishiho-kun! 📸✨

Nishiho-kun’s appearance changes depending on the amount of snowfall and temperature each day, so be sure to check out just how big he gets!

The Shinhotaka Ropeway also offers a variety of Nishiho-kun-themed food and merchandise, including Nishiho-kun cookies, Nishiho-kun ice cream, Nishiho-kun magnets, and Nishiho-kun towels.

Hello from the Shinotaka Ropeway aerial tramway! 🚡✨

Did you know that the tramway is located in one of Japan’s snowiest regions?

During the snowiest periods of the year, the snow can pile up to heights well above an average person’s head! ❄

Today, we’d like to share two unique ways to enjoy the Shinotaka Ropeway in winter. 💁

First up: Make an “angel mark”! ✨

An “angel mark” – also called a "snow angel" – gets its name from the wing-like impression left in the snow when you lie back in the snow and move your arms up and down.

The snow around the Shinotaka Ropeway is light, fluffy powder, so why not leave your own mark in the soft snow as a special winter memory?

Second: Take some photos! 📸

Snow illuminated by the sunlight sparkles beautifully, making for photos that are sure to stand out!

Come winter, the area around the tramway dresses itself in snow, transforming into a pure white winter wonderland. ❄

Under blue skies, the glittering snow is simply beautiful, making the already-spectacular views of the Northern Alps feel even more enchanting. Snow typically begins falling from around mid-November.

This winter, come escape the everyday and lose yourself in the dreamlike scenery of the Shinhotaka Ropeway.

Today we're shining a spotlight on one of autumn's greatest highlights in the city of Takayama, home to Shinhotaka Ropeway: the magnificent Takayama Festival!

Held every year on October 9 and 10, the Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival) is a spectacle unlike any other. 🏮
Lavishly decorated floats parade through the historic old town streets in a procession of breathtaking splendor – a sight that simply has to be seen to be believed. ✨
The festival is also recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Among the highlights to look out for: the mesmerizing karakuri ningyo – mechanical puppet performances of extraordinary craftsmanship that move with such lifelike precision they seem almost human – and the hauntingly beautiful Yoi Matsuri ("evening festival"), where more than a hundred lanterns cast their warm glow across the night sky. 👀

A new travel collection project, “Sakudouin,” is starting! Take in breathtaking 360-degree panoramas and visit spectacular spots to collect them. Born as the ropeway and gondola version of the hugely popular “Tetsuincho” (Railway Stamp Book), this project invites you to ride your favorite scenic ropeways and keep your travel memories in a tangible form.

🌟 How to Enjoy “Sakudouin”

[Paper Sakudouin] (From 300 yen): Original, heartwarming designs from each company. You might even find special editions made with local Japanese washi paper!

[Digital Sakudouin] (From 550 yen): Easily collect them on-site using your smartphone via the “Tetsuincho Digital” web app platform.

Closure of the ‘Soyoka no Mori’ Nature Trail on the Nabedaira Plateau

Thank you for your continued support of the Shinhotaka Ropeway.

As bears have been sighted and signs of their presence have been confirmed in the surrounding area, we are prioritising the safety of our visitors and will therefore be closing the Nabedaira Kogen Nature Trail ‘Soyoka no Mori’ until further notice.

■ Closure period: From today until further notice

We will announce the reopening date of the nature trail on our website as soon as safety can be confirmed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to our visitors and thank you for your understanding.

This time, we’re bringing you a taste of Shinhotaka in all its autumn glory!
When fall arrives, the trees of the Northern Alps transform into a breathtaking tapestry of vivid color. 🍁

And what makes Shinhotaka’s fall foliage truly special is the stunning gradation effect!
The leaves begin to turn first at the higher elevations and gradually work their way down, making the mountainside become a seamless cascade of color from summit to valley floor.

By around November, snow begins to dust the peaks, creating the magical “three-tier fall foliage” display – a spectacular layering of snow-white summits, blazing autumn color, and still-green lower slopes all visible at once.

And because the color change unfolds gradually over time, the season lasts longer here than in many other spots – giving you plenty of opportunities to catch it at its peak. 💡
