The owner of Guest House AMARGE is actually an Ama diver, Japan’s traditional shellfish diver, of Ijika in Toba city.

Guests can visit the owner’s real Ama hut which is hidden from outside and not always accepting visitors.

You may be able to see her diving in the sea and see her catches of the day🐟

This shellfish is called “Sande” in Ijika.

Its standard name is actually “Sazae” in Japan, but locals call it in another name.

The first time I heard the name, I thought people were saying “Sunday”.

Learning local dialect is always fun👍

2021 winter season started on 8th of October.

Sazae fishing is comparatively easier than abalone fishing.

But since the price amount weight is really cheap, so we gotta catch a lot of this shellfish to earn enough money.

It’s so heavy to carry wet shellfish after a hard work in the sea.

Tough winter Ama diving season has just started💪🏽

This year, the number of abalones were dramatically decreased in Shima city, Mie prefecture. Many Ama divers in Shima region were so much affected on the situation, and many of them had to find other jobs during this season.

Question: How old is your grandma, and what does she do everyday?

Here in Ijika, most of the old ladies are doing Ama (海女), and they are making their livelihood by diving and catching shellfish even though most of them are over 70 years old (❗️) In fact, the oldest one in the village is actually 85 years old, and is still actively working.

Having a work you love to do and being healthy, that’s one of the reasons why Ama women are enjoying their lives♥️

Usually, the season of abalone fishing is until 14th of September in Ise-Shima region.

But it’s been decided in our village Ijika to end the season until 10th this year.

Hopefully we can go dive a few more times till that day🤞
