🌾Our local rice brand, Mineasahi (ミネアサヒ) earned Special A (特A) grade, the highest ranking based on Japan Grain Inspection Association’s annual rice tasting test in six categories: physical appearance, taste, fragrance, chewiness, hardness, and overall quality.

The first time ever for a rice brand in Aichi Prefecture to earn the highest ranking, equivalent to Yumepirika from Hokkaido and Koshihikari from Uonuma, Niigata.

The rice grain of Mineasahi is shorter, fatter, and harder than other Japanese rice types. When cooked, it has glossy appearance and great tastes and chewiness similar to Koshihikari.

Mineasahi represents only 6% of total rice production in Aichi Prefecture. Due to scarcity in the market, it is called “magical rice (幻の米).” The rice is produced in a very small scale by hands of small rice farmers on small paddy areas at inland valleys in the mountainous regions of Aichi Prefecture. Our commercial interests are secondary. We only sell excess to local rice distributors after setting aside for our family first. This has been our family’s tradition as a local kengyo (part-time) farmer.

It is such an honor to receive the highest ranking in terms of rice quality. We’re extremely happy when our Airbnb customers compliment our rice which we put so much care, take pride, and work hard in making.

This is the first post since COVID-19 pandemic and this is the most positive news to the local community of rice farmers like ourselves 🙂

We had our last guests of the year from Singapore 🇸🇬! Helen's family with her lovely 6-year-old daughter took their courage to stay at our "ulu" countryside home to experience local ways of rural life in Toyota.

Thank you for trying our shiokoji cooking class and our local recommendations for Japanese traditional paper-making experience 📜, snow sledding at Asahi Kogen Highland ⛄️, and surprising winter cherry blossoms in Obara 🌸!!

We're very happy to hear that her daughter enjoyed the snow sled so much that she said it is the best part of her trip in Japan 🙂

感谢你你们来访Kengyo农场,祝你们有个愉快的新年!

⛄️Winter may not the most popular season to visit Japan unless you enjoy winter sports.

But it’s the best season to feel warmth of Japanese family in a local, traditional way.

📜 If you like art and craft, you can join an unique experience of making and pairing Japanese traditional paper called washi, which used to be an winter job for farmers. It is now preserved as an art form.

❄️ If you are new to snow, go to Asahi Kogen for sledding (no skiing & snowboarding allowed). If you like to hike on natural snow, the best bet is to go to the highest point of Toyota City at Mt. Nebiso with the view of Mt. Fuji to the east and Japan Alps to the north. If you are lucky, you can see hoarfrosts in the morning.

Sasado Jinenjo Matsuri on 16-17 Nov (Part 2)

At the festival venue, I watched local martial arts of bounte (棒の手). It originated in Aichi Prefecture 500 years ago. Farmers in countryside of Toyota City used to be trained to use weapons like swords and spears to protect horses that are offered to gods in shrines. As it’s now rare to raise horses to offer to shrines, farmers offer the training of bounote (weapons used to protest horses) to shrines.

Sasado Jinenjo Matsuri on 16-17 Nov (Part 1)

I took part in a local festival to harvest Jinenjo, a Japanese wild yam. It’s an expensive local delicacy. Japanese usually grate it and eat it with soba noodles. The wholesale price of 500 gram is about 1,500 yen (USD12). But it goes up by 2-3 times at retail. It is primarily grown in the wild so it is not easy to replicate soil suitable for Jinenjo production. Also the farmer told me that heat in September restricted growth of Jinenjo. Many believe that global warming in recent years makes it difficult for some crops to grow.

After replanting done by 🇸🇬 Singapore guests in late April, chrysanthemum finally bloomed in autumn. Three quarters of the plants didn’t make it as those suffered from excessive heat in summer and got knocked down by Super Typhoon Hagibis last month. Chrysanthemum is used as an Imperial Seal of Japan. In Japanese culture, it is often displayed at cemetery, Buddhist altars, and takonoma alcove where our guests stay.
