Mr. N and his wife enjoyed a trip around Oita together while Mr. N was living in Miyazaki for work.
They especially loved the tranquility in this castle town as well as the traditional sceneries on the streets.

They have also had experience living abroad, so during our walk through Usuki’s historic castle town, I shared the fascinating connections between Usuki and Portugal.

After the tour, they enjoyed a delicious fugu dinner. 🐡
We hope you’ll come back and visit us again—next time, to try Usuki’s famous Kabosu Buri! 🐟

学校の休み期間を利用してオーストラリアから臼杵に来てくださったSさん一家。10代のお子さんも食べれそうな玉子サンドイッチとカツサンドを朝食にしましたが、好評だったのがキャロットラペ。
ビネガーの代用で、旬のカボスを使ったのが良かったようです😊

This lovely family guest came all the way from Australia to Usuki during their school holidays.

For breakfast, I prepared egg sandwiches and katsu sandwiches that I thought their teenage children would enjoy. But the surprise favourite turned out to be the carrot râpée!
Instead of vinegar, I used seasonal kabosu citrus, which seems to have been a big hit. 😊

A family from the United States stayed with us on a tight schedule. And something magical happened at breakfast!

Can you spot it? A dragonfly landed right on their daughter’s hand ✨

We enjoyed the sight of the dragonfly in flight—a little sign that autumn is on its way—along with our breakfast.

After breakfast, they headed out on our popular complimentary Castle Town Walking Tour. One hour later, they returned to the house just as their taxi arrived. They then headed off to their next destination: Miyazaki.

夏休みの旅行で滞在してくれたマリアさんのご一家。日本人のご主人とハンガリー人のマリアさんの国際カップルのファミリーです。

私もかつて2年ほど滞在したハンガリー。懐かしいハンガリー話に花が咲きました。

せっかくなので、朝食は大分の郷土料理「だんご汁」をお2人にも作ってもらいました。まだ寝ていた男子2人も朝食は完食！気に入っていただいて何よりでした。

Maria and her family stayed with us during their summer vacation. They are an international family, with a Japanese husband and Maria, who is Hungarian.

I actually lived in Hungary for about two years myself, so it was wonderful to reminisce and share stories about Hungary. We had such a lovely time talking about the country.

I thought it would be fun to have them make dangojiru, a traditional local dish from Oita, together with me for breakfast.

The two boys, who were still sleeping when we started, even woke up and finished every bite! I was so happy that everyone enjoyed it.

After trying many different breakfast options, we found that the one every guest seems to love—no matter where they're from—is my father's signature French toast. He was a professional Western-style chef, and I learned this recipe from him. The bread is soaked overnight in a sweet egg mixture flavored with vanilla extract before being cooked to a golden finish. On this day, we served it with our homemade summer orange marmalade and cooked sweet potatoes.

We welcome only one group per day. When schedules allow, we also offer a complimentary guided walking tour of Usuki’s historic castle town. 🤗

A lovely family from Denmark 🇩🇰 came to stay with us during their third trip to Japan.

They had watched every episode of the Disney series SHOGUN, and were amazed to learn that the story is based on real historical events—and that William Adams (Anjin) actually washed ashore in Usuki! 😲

We also talked about the differences between Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, how to pray at a shrine, and many other aspects of Japanese culture.

For breakfast, we served somen, a refreshing noodle dish that perfectly captures the feeling of a Japanese summer. It turned out to be a little too light for their taste, though! 😂

In particular, July 18 (Saturday), the Okaeri (the return procession) is the highlight of the festival.
