William Morris
A 19th-century British textile designer, poet, fantasy writer, artist, printer, translator, architectural conservationist and socialist activist.

He is famous for his botanical-patterned wallpaper and stained glass.
Morris’s design philosophy, which sought to harmonise life and art, and its practical application (the Arts and Crafts movement) had a profound influence across many countries and is said to have laid the foundations for 20th-century modern design.

A highlight of Nakao Villa
is the beautiful view of the mountains and trees visible from the living, dining and kitchen areas.

We have replaced the roller blinds on those windows with beautiful ones that also blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
The roller blinds we had been using for many years were damaged and faded, so these new ones, which fit perfectly with the wooden window frames, have completely transformed the look of the room.

This spring,

we replaced the wallpaper in the tatami room at Nakao Villa
with a ‘pale green’ shade that harmonises with the natural surroundings of Nozawa Onsen Village.
As the old wallpaper had been peeling and was damaged,
the room looks completely different now.

ずっとここにいるのに
一度も咲かなかった
紫陽花が
今年初めて咲きました

君は水色🩵だったんだね😌　

雪解けと共に
剪定し
根本も風通しよく

毎年毎年、根気良く
観察して
"なぜあなたは咲かないの？"と
問いかけながら

今年は良い予感したんだよね💓🤭　

咲いてくれてありがとう🙏😌　

花の色が変わる仕組みアジサイには「アントシアニン」という色素が含まれています。土壌が「酸性」だとアルミニウムが根から溶け出しやすくなり、色素と結びつくことで青色が発色します。反対に「アルカリ性」の土ではアルミニウムが溶けにくく、色素がそのまま残るためピンク色になります

Even though it’s been here all this time,
it never bloomed once—
but this year,
the hydrangea bloomed for the first time.

So you were light blue 🩵 all along, weren’t you? 😌　

As the snow melted,
I pruned it
and made sure the base had good airflow.

Year after year, patiently,
I watched over it,
asking,
“Why won’t you bloom?”

But this year, I just had a good feeling about it 💓🤭

How the flower’s color changes:
Hydrangeas contain a pigment called “anthocyanin.” When the soil is “acidic,” aluminum is more easily leached from the roots, and when it binds with the pigment, it produces a blue color. Conversely, in “alkaline” soil, aluminum is less likely to leach out, so the pigment remains unchanged, resulting in a pink color.

波打つ地面の芝生は、3年かかり根付きました

芝桜
大地に根付き満開になるまで2年かかりました😌☝️

紫陽花
4本植えたうち、2本が根付きました。
1年かかりました。

花壇
ここまで作り上げる為に6年かかりました。
芝桜、上り藤、菖蒲、ハーブ(ミント、ローズマリー、レモン系のハーブ)、山椒の木、私の家から少しずつ部分的に
トランスファーしました。
それぞれトランスファーに適したタイミングがあります。

結果は直ぐにはでません。
お金と時間をかけても、時には根付く事なく失敗する事もあります。そして、その失敗から学び、改善策を考えて次に繋げます。

そう、命ある植物を根気良く育てるのは、
私達の人生と同じなんです。

諦めたら、そこで終わり
枯れて絶えてしまいます。
植物は一目で見て分かりやすいんです。

The first is my family house 🤭 where is located on an entrance of the village most of you drive pass 😌

It took two years for them to take root in the ground 😌☝️

Hydrangeas
Out of the four I planted, two took root. It took a year.

Flower Bed
It took six years to create this.
I gradually transferred shibazakura, climbing wisteria, irises, herbs (mint, rosemary, and lemon-scented herbs), and a Japanese pepper tree from my home, bit by bit.
Each plant has its own optimal time for transplanting.

You don’t see results right away.
Even if you invest money and time, sometimes they fail to take root and the effort is wasted. But we learn from those failures, come up with solutions, and use them to build toward the next step.

Yes, patiently nurturing living plants is just like our own lives.

If you give up, that’s the end—
they wither and die.
You can see it at a glance.

You tend to them, and wonder, “Why is this happening⁉️”
“Isn’t there a better way⁉️”
“The flower I planted next to it died⁉️”
“Was it overwhelmed by a stronger plant⁉️”

It takes effort,
it costs money,
and it takes time.

Cost management,
risk management,
time management,
and aftercare.

For me,
tending flower beds and vegetable gardens
is a part of life. 😌

I grew up watching
both my grandmother and my mother
do just that. 😌🩷
