The Last Resort…
Yesterday marked the final day of skiing at Yokoteyama & Shibutoge Ski Resort in Shiga Kogen, officially becoming the last resort in the area to close for the season.
Running from November 20, 2025, through to May 17, 2026, Yokoteyama once again proved why it’s famous for having one of the longest ski seasons in Japan — operating for an incredible six months of the year. At 2,307m above sea level, it is also the highest ski resort in Japan, well known for holding snow exceptionally well right through spring.
We were there a few weeks ago and it was definitely spring conditions, but they were still managing top-to-bottom runs, with plenty of park rats hitting the jumps in the terrain park.
Yokoteyama is located in the northern Nagano mountains within the vast Shiga Kogen ski area, around an hour’s drive from Nozawa Onsen and close to the famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.
Thanks to its high elevation and colder temperatures, Yokoteyama often continues operating long after many other Japanese ski resorts have closed for the season. Spring skiing here can still offer surprisingly good snow conditions, incredible mountain views, and quieter slopes.
As winter now gives way to the green season, Shiga Kogen transforms into one of Japan’s most beautiful alpine areas for: 🌿 hiking 🌿 cycling 🌿 scenic drives 🌿 café stops 🌿 stargazing and sea-of-cloud views
Many of these summer activities are already well underway in Nozawa Onsen. It’s a great time to visit and experience a different side of the mountains.
Though, funnily enough, most people already can’t wait for next winter. ⛷️ How about you?

1. Hidden Hot Springs Beneath the Streets ♨️❄️
Did you know that beneath the narrow streets of Nozawa Onsen, natural hot spring water flows underground?
In winter, the heat from the onsen helps melt the snow on the roads, a traditional system that has supported village life for generations. Even during heavy snowfall, the warm earth keeps the village moving.

2. The Legend of the Healing Bear 🐻♨️
One legend says that a hunter discovered the healing waters of Kuma-no-Tearai-yu after seeing an injured bear washing its paw in warm water deep in the mountains.
The bear’s wound healed quickly, and people realized the spring had special healing powers. That’s why the bath is called “Kuma-no-Tearai-yu - Bear’s Hand-Washing Hot Spring.”

3. Cooking with Hot Springs 🍳♨️
Hot spring water in Nozawa Onsen isn’t only for bathing it’s also used for cooking. At cooking springs around the village, locals boil eggs and vegetables using natural geothermal heat.
Many of the onsen eggs served at traditional inns in Nozawa Onsen are still freshly cooked in the village’s hot spring water each morning by the inn staff themselves. It’s one of the tastiest ways to experience the power of the onsen.

That’s a wrap on another incredible ski season in Nozawa Onsen! 🎿❄️
From the first turns in late November to our final runs on May 6th, it’s been a long, memorable season — over 5 months of snow, smiles, and unforgettable moments on the mountain.

🎏 Happy Kodomo no Hi from Nozawa Onsen 🇯🇵
Today in Japan we celebrate Children’s Day, a time to wish for the health, happiness, and bright futures of kids everywhere. You’ll see colourful koinobori (carp streamers) flying in the breeze — symbols of strength, courage, and perseverance as they swim upstream.
It’s also a nice reminder for all of us: childhood should be full of adventure, curiosity, and fresh air.
Here in Nozawa Onsen, kids have the perfect playground all year round. From skiing and snow play in winter ❄️ to biking, hiking, exploring nature, and splashing in rivers through the green season 🌿—there’s always something to spark their sense of wonder.
