Shaun Mittwollen has been photographing the Japanese Alps, specifically the Nozawa Onsen region, for almost a decade. Over that time he has amassed quite a collection of stunning imagery that was often featured here on the Nozawa Onsen snow reports which he wrote daily between 2012 and 2017. During 2020 he has slowly been building up his website to display and sell prints of the Japanese Alps. If you’ve seen a really nice photo of Nozawa Onsen, theres a good chance that you’ll be able to find it in this gallery. And if you like what you see the prints are available on exquisite Hahnemuhle paper with sizes ranging from 30cm to 150cm and speedy international delivery. Shaun hopes to return to Nozawa Onsen as normal life returns to deliver more beautiful imagery and of course, the simple pleasure of skiing in and around the idyllic village.

A few new touches at Kaiya Nozawa

Over the Summer many places work hard on renovating their lodges for the influx of guests over the Ski Season. Kaiya Nozawa located just near Sparena was one that kept busy and have designed a new Kitchen and Dining room. Great space and thanks a lot for the delicious breakfast.

Welcome to Winter in Nozawa Onsen

We went to bed waiting for this dump to arrive, walking back from the Onsen and the skies were clear.
Waking up this morning to this was a very welcome surprise. It probably started in the early hours of this morning and has just ramped up with some big flakes lofting down now.
Nice cold temps in the village at the moment and forecast to stay cold with more snow the next few days ahead of some sunshine.
Will it be enough for the resort to open tomorrow? Will keep you posted but not overly confident yet
At this stage the forecast is expecting another good dump next weekend so keep your fingers crossed.
Some of our guests have been heading to Shiga Kogen and Ryuoo Park which are both open and having a lot of fun on the runs there. Conditions there will have only improved with this fall. For now enjoy these flakes and keep them coming.

Welcome to a Sunny Sunday Slide from Nozawa Onsen

This was March 24th 2018 and a beautiful time of year on the slopes in Nozawa
We love March in Nozawa with the base still usually over 300cm and top to bottom skiing
Very few people on the slopes and still some dumps of fresh snow
This was a Saturday so a few folk from Tokyo up but on the week days it can be just you sometimes.

Welcome to your Sunday slide from Nozawa Onsen.

This is from Nagasaka slope in late February last season. Nagasaka is the first slope you come to underneath the main Gondola and a good place to find your feet before you head to the top. A nice easy slope where you can still get some speed and also home to the Night Skiing on the weekends which is a lot of fun.

Ready for a Cool Change!

With temperatures in the village of Nozawa Onsen reaching over 30 degrees celsius at the moment we are already looking forward to the Snowy days like this ahead.
This video was early January last season and it seemed like the heavy snow would never stop.

Hard to imagine that it will be -10 degrees soon so a 40 degree plus difference from right now in Nozawa! As in winter it is cooler up top at Yamabiko almost 10 degrees cooler depending on the weather. Generally speaking 100 meters of increase in elevation can drop the temperature by 1 degree. So mathematically speaking with over 1000m vertical change between top and bottom in Nozawa we can expect up to 10 degrees cooler temps on top of Mt Kenashi.
The same applies in the cooler months depending on cloud etc.

"Rainy" Rainy Season in Japan
This year in Nozawa and across many parts of Japan we have seen a bit more wet weather than normal and cooler temperatures. Especially compared to the hot summer last year when the highest temperature ever recorded was hit at 41.1 degrees in Saitama.

The cause of the cooler, rainy weather is an anticyclone in the Sea of Okhotsk, off the eastern seaboard of Russia, that has been pushing cold and humid air south across Japan.
Japan is hit by a rainy season between late June and early July that has usually finished by now, but looks like still a bit of rain to come.
The weather is affecting the Rice crops in Nozawa and many vegetable farms across the country. Good news is it should break soon and it is also cooler weather to explore the mountains and enjoy some of the great hiking in the region. The big question on many peoples lips is how will this weather pattern affect the next Ski Season? Very hard to say this far out. The JMA releases long term forecasts 3 months out so will keep an eye on them but that far out still very hard to predict. The farmers, some say as we had all this precipitation now will get less in Winter others say the opposite and that the moisture will continue to fall from the sky resulting in more snow in Winter.
