As the vibrant green rice grows taller and the grains begin to form, we’re reminded that harvest isn’t far away. Not long after that, the temperatures begin to drop, and before we know it, these same fields will be blanketed in snow.
In just four months, we could be skiing right here in Nozawa Onsen. Hard to believe when the thermometer outside my front door is reading 35°C!

From the first turns on snowy slopes to the Olympic stage... ⛷️❄️
Did you know that skiing in Nozawa Onsen has a history of over 100 years?

It all began with the Nozawa Onsen Ski Club in 1923. In the 1930s, legendary Austrian skier Hannes Schneider visited Nozawa to teach skiing, creating a lasting friendship with his hometown, St. Anton—now Nozawa's sister village.

Back then, there were no ski lifts. The very first lift wasn't built until 1950, right here at Hikage by the Nozawa Onsen Ski Club.
Fast forward a few decades, and Nozawa Onsen welcomed the world by hosting the biathlon events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. 🌏🏅

Nozawa Gondola Opening Dates for Summer and the coming Winter

The million-yen question we get asked every year; "When will Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort open?" 🚠❄️
We wish we had a crystal ball big enough to give you the answer! After more than 30 years of snow seasons in Nozawa Onsen, one thing we've learned is that Mother Nature always has the final say.

The Ski resort will usually try and open on the last weekend of November if there is enough snow or it is cold enough for snow making as we have the Snow Making Machines now. But after 30 years of snow seasons in Nozawa all I can tell you is it varies. On average I would say over the years it opens around December 10th. Some years earlier some later.

Nagasaka Gondola Returns for Summer!
Beauty of Nozawa Onsen from new heights this summer with a ride on the Nagasaka Gondola! This scenic journey takes you 800 meters up to Mt. Kenashi, offering great views of the village and the surrounding mountains.

For the 2026 Green Season, the gondola will be operating from July 18 to October 25, 2026.

The Morning Markets in Nozawa 🥬
Asaichi or Morning markets along the Main Street “Oyu Dori” in Nozawa creates a great little vibe in the village on a Sunday morning. Many of the local businesses and individuals come out and set up little street side stalls to pedal their wares. Fresh local produce, art and crafts, home-made jams, bread and even Sake lots of interesting things to browse and buy.

The market takes place every Sunday Morning from 6am to 7:30am from May to October.
So you need to get up early, but it is nice and warm in summer and can start the day with a relaxing walk and an Onsen under the filtered morning light.

毎年5月〜10月の毎週日曜日、野沢温泉のメインストリート「大湯通り」で朝市が開催されています。地元のお店や住民の方々が軒先に並び、新鮮な野菜や果物、手作りのパンやジャム、工芸品、アート作品、さらには日本酒まで、さまざまな商品が並びます。のんびりとした雰囲気の中で散策しながら、お気に入りを見つけるのも楽しみのひとつです。
開催時間は朝6:00〜7:30と少し早めですが、夏の爽やかな空気の中、朝の散歩や温泉と合わせて楽しむのがおすすめ。やわらかな朝日が差し込む温泉街の風景は格別です。
