The other day, I spent a *slightly special night* with a friend who works on Yokosuka Base—and wow, it turned into something unforgettable.

We kicked things off with a steak dinner 🥩
And honestly… it exceeded every expectation.
Tender, juicy, and packed with flavor—it was one of those “so THIS is what authentic tastes like” moments.

🌏✨【“言葉が通じなくても、心は動く”アイスランドからのゲスト】✨

以前、我が家に初めてアイスランドからのゲストが来てくれました🇮🇸
とてもシャイな方達で、「写真は後ろ姿ならOK」とのこと😌
それでもポーズを決めてくれた姿が可愛らしく、今でも忘れられません。

滞在中は横須賀の人気スポット「軍港巡り」に参加🚢
日本語中心のツアーなので少し心配でしたが、感想は「最高だった！」😳✨

言葉が分からなくても、海の空気や迫力ある軍艦、その場のリアルな体験がしっかり心に届いていたようです。

さらに彼らが感動していたのが♨️日本の温泉文化。
火山が多いアイスランドでも温泉は身近な存在だそうで、横須賀の昔ながらの銭湯や温泉にとても喜んでくれました。

我が家の周りには徒歩圏内に銭湯が3つあり、今も“日本の原風景”のような文化が残っています。

🌟遠く離れた国同士でも、共通する「心地よさ」がある。
そんなことを実感させてくれた素敵な出会いでした。

We recently welcomed our very first guests from Iceland! 🇮🇸
They were quite shy and told us, "Back-view photos only, please." 😌
The way they still struck a pose for me was so adorable—a memory I’ll always treasure.

During their stay, they joined the popular "YOKOSUKA Naval Port Cruise." 🚢
Since the tour is primarily in Japanese, I was a little worried, but their reaction was a resounding "It was amazing!" 😳✨

Even without understanding the language, it seems the sea breeze, the powerful presence of the warships, and the raw energy of the experience truly touched their hearts.

They were also deeply moved by ♨️ Japanese Onsen culture.
Coming from Iceland, a land of many volcanoes, hot springs are very familiar to them. They were absolutely delighted by Yokosuka’s traditional public baths (sento) and hot springs.

In our neighborhood, there are three sentos within walking distance—a place where the "nostalgic scenery of Japan" still lives on.

🌟 Even between countries far apart, we share a common sense of "comfort."
It was a wonderful encounter that reminded me of that beautiful connection.

The French guest originally came to Japan on a business trip.
At first, he stayed with us just to look for an apartment.
So after a week, I asked him:
“Did you find a good place?”
And he replied—
👉 “Yeah… I did. This house.”
Wait… what?! 😳
Yes—he chose our home.
And just like that, his short stay turned into a 6-month adventure.
And he definitely gave us some unforgettable stories…
🐟 Ate so much fish he got sick
🤒 Kitty was panicking, trying to take care of him
🏥 Even his coworkers came to visit—he was that popular 😂
Meanwhile, our American friend…
💻 While job hunting,
accidentally mixed up his interview date—and felt pretty down about it.
Then one night, the three of us…
♨️ Went to a traditional public bath together,
where we were all surprised to see someone with classic yakuza tattoos 😳
And on the way back,
we stopped by a park, enjoying the cool evening air with a cold beer in hand 🍺✨
That one drink?
Absolutely unforgettable.
Different countries.
Different backgrounds.
Yet somehow, we shared the same moment in time.

👴✨【“最高の時間”は、すぐそばにあった】✨
こんにちは！
今日は、以前我が家に滞在してくれた
まだ紹介できていなかった素敵なゲストのお話です。
彼が横須賀に来た理由は、とてもシンプル。
それは――
横須賀ベースで働く娘さんご夫婦に会うため。
でも、その滞在スタイルがとても印象的でした。
毎日、娘さん夫婦の家へ行き、
大好きな孫と遊び、犬と触れ合い🐶
その後は、近くの温泉でゆっくりリラックス♨️
そして夜になると、我が家に戻ってくる。
そんな穏やかで、幸せが詰まった毎日。
たまたま顔を合わせて話すと、
彼はいつも満面の笑顔でこう言うんです。
「孫が本当に可愛くてね😊」
その一言に、すべてが詰まっていました。
派手な観光じゃなくてもいい。
特別なイベントがなくてもいい。
“誰と過ごすか”で、時間はこんなにも輝く。

who stayed with us before—but whom I never had the chance to introduce.
The reason he came to Yokosuka was very simple:
to visit his daughter and her husband, who work at the Yokosuka base.
But the way he spent his time here was truly memorable.
Every day, he would visit his daughter’s home,
play with his beloved grandchild, and spend time with their dog 🐶
Then, he would unwind at a nearby hot spring ♨️
before returning to our home in the evening.
It was such a peaceful, joy-filled routine.
Whenever we happened to chat,
he would always say with the biggest smile:
“My grandchild is just so adorable 😊”
That one sentence said it all.

🍽️【ゲストに手料理を振る舞った結果…意外なリアクション！】😆
先日、我が家に来てくれたゲストに
ランチをご馳走しました。
メニューは…
✨ ハヤシライス
🥑 アボカドサラダ
もちろん全部シェフ・ケイトの手作りです。
ところが…
妻のキティは一口食べて、
「ちょっとバターが多すぎるかも…」と
あまり食べてくれませんでした😂
（シェフとしてはちょっとショック…笑）
でもその一方で、
ゲストは「美味しい！」と言って
しっかり食べてくれました。
同じ料理でも、感じ方って本当に人それぞれですね。
でも誰かが「美味しい」と言ってくれると、
やっぱり料理って嬉しいものです。

🌸🎎【国境を越えた、ちょっと特別なひな祭り】🎎🌸
先日、今我が家に滞在している海外からのゲストと一緒に、ひな祭りパーティーを開きました。
日本では当たり前のこの行事ですが、海外の人にとってはとても新鮮で不思議な文化。
雛人形を見て「これはプリンセスとエンペラー？」と目を輝かせたり、
ちらし寿司や日本のお菓子を楽しみながら、日本の伝統についてたくさん質問してくれました。
言葉や国籍は違っても、
「一緒に食べて、笑って、文化を分かち合う」
それだけで距離は一瞬で縮まるんだな、と改めて感じた夜でした。
こうして世界の人たちと、日本の季節や文化を一緒に楽しめるのは本当に幸せなことだと思いますし、その事を再確認できる機会を与えてくれる民泊はやっぱり素晴らしいですね。

The other day, I held a Hina Matsuri party with my overseas guests who are currently staying at my home.
While this event is commonplace in Japan, it's a very fresh and mysterious culture for people from overseas.
They looked at the Hina dolls and their eyes lit up, asking, "Are these princesses and emperors?"
While enjoying chirashi sushi and Japanese sweets, they asked many questions about Japanese traditions.
Even though we speak different languages and have different nationalities, "Eating together, laughing, and sharing culture" It was a night that made me realize once again how much distance can be bridged in an instant.
I truly believe it's wonderful to be able to enjoy Japanese seasons and culture together with people from all over the world, and homestays that give us opportunities to reaffirm this are truly amazing.
