A pioneer in eco-tourism for over 30 years, Gamewatchers combines environmental protection with cultural preservation by working with local communities on conservation projects. We are committed to helping preserve Africa’s unique wildlife, landscapes and local communities. We believe that the best way to do this is through sustainable ecotourism ventures that benefit the local communities and give our guests a rewarding experience. Our Porini Camps are a sustainable model that practically implements these principles. We are dedicated to providing our clients with exemplary personalised service and strive to have them leave as friends. The Porini Camps are situated within exclusive wildlife conservancies in Selenkay, Laikipia and the Mara. Each of our Porini Camps offers an intimate safari experience away from the crowds of tourists in minibuses. As well as the Porini Camps, we also operate two Adventure Camps, which offer the same high quality wildlife safari experience normally associated with top-end safari camps (e.g. day and night game drives, open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles, guided walks and expert guides) but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic adventure camps. These Adventure camps are ideal for those who are travelling on a budget but don’t want to compromise on their wildlife-viewing opportunities. We have received numerous international awards, so you can have confidence in Gamewatchers Safaris as one of the leading and longest established safari companies. Gamewatchers Safaris won “Africa’s Responsible Tourism Award” in the World Travel Awards for 2018 & 2019. Selenkay Conservancy won the 2018 Eco Warrior Award for “Best Conservancy in Promoting Culture and Heritage”. We have also won “Kenya’s Leading Safari Camp Brand” three times and “Africa’s Leading Tented Safari Camps” three times and we were “Kenya’s Tour Operator of the Year” in the 2015 Ecotourism Warrior Awards. In addition, our camps are regularly reviewed on TripAdvisor and all of our Porini Safari Camps have been recognised as TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame winners.

What does it take to keep a wildlife conservancy functioning when nature presents unexpected challenges?

At 𝐎𝐥 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐲𝐞𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲, the 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 takes its name from the former Mobile Adventure Camp, which was located nearby. The crossing is used by both vehicles and wildlife, providing a passage across the river.

Recently, a large acacia tree brought down by an elephant (Ndovu) blocked the crossing, disrupting access to the eastern part of the conservancy. With this being the only remaining crossing, restoring access was essential.

Our rangers worked to clear the fallen tree, and we’re pleased to share that the crossing is now clear and open for use.

While conservation is often associated with protecting wildlife and preserving habitats, it also involves the practical work that supports day-to-day conservancy management. From maintaining essential access routes to responding to unexpected challenges in the natural environment, these efforts help keep conservation operations moving.

It’s a reminder that protecting wildlife also means caring for the landscapes they inhabit and adapting to the challenges that come with managing these dynamic ecosystems.

From the prides moving across the conservancies to elephants navigating the bush and birds bringing life to the camp surroundings, this week’s sightings offered another glimpse into the incredible diversity of Kenya’s wild spaces. Here’s a look at some of the encounters our guides and guests enjoyed along the way.

📍 𝐎𝐥 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐲𝐞𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲
The Lemuny Pride made an appearance this week, giving guests a memorable opportunity to encounter these magnificent lions in their natural habitat. Giraffes were also among the sightings, adding another special moment to the week’s wildlife encounters across the conservancy.

📍 𝐎𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐭𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲
A monkey perched high in a tree offered a different perspective on life in the wild, while buffalo and lions added to the week’s sightings. From the treetops to the open plains, there was plenty to discover.

📍 𝐓𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐨 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤
Zebras, giraffes and elephants were among the week’s sightings, while a klipspringer added a special highlight. These small, sure-footed antelopes are well adapted to rocky terrain, making an encounter with one a lovely reminder of the diversity of wildlife found across Tsavo West.

📍 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤
Rhinos, elephants and lions featured among the week’s sightings, a reminder of the remarkable wildlife diversity found on the doorstep of Kenya’s capital. The park offers a unique setting where the natural world and the city’s skyline exist side by side.

📍 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤
Elephants and zebras were among the wildlife encountered this week. Whether moving across the open plains or gathering in their herds, these familiar safari favorites continue to make every journey through Amboseli worth remembering.

📍 𝐁𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞
Ostriches, elephants, lions and giraffes brought a varied mix of wildlife encounters to the week. From the long-legged stride of an ostrich to the powerful presence of lions, the reserve offered plenty of reasons to keep exploring.

📍 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩
Birdlife took centre stage around camp this week. With 61 bird species recorded at Nairobi Tented Camp, the surrounding gardens and trees offer plenty to appreciate for those who take a moment to notice the smaller details of the natural world.

No two weeks in the wild unfold in quite the same way. Different species, unexpected encounters and the changing rhythms of nature make every safari its own story.

Have you ever wondered how a bird can travel across continents and still find its way to the waters where it hunts?

This 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐲, we’re celebrating the 𝐎𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐲 (𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐬), also known as the 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐤, a remarkable bird of prey found near lakes, rivers and coastal waters around the world.

With its distinctive white head, dark stripe across the eyes and impressive wingspan, the Osprey is built for life around water. Its diet consists almost entirely of fish, which it catches through spectacular feet-first dives. Specialised foot pads and sharp talons help it grip slippery prey, while it often positions a captured fish head-first in flight to reduce wind resistance.

But there’s more to this incredible bird than its fishing skills. 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐎𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚. Wait… does this giraffe have 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬?

Look closely at the middle of its forehead! That extra projection is called a 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐞, an unusual feature that gives this giraffe a distinctive look.

It’s the little details like these that make every wildlife encounter so fascinating. You never quite know what you’ll discover out in the wild.
