Some places don't just tell history, they are history.

Perched above George Adamson's original campsite, Elsa's Kopje stands in the very landscape where one of conservation's most extraordinary stories began. It was here that George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness before successfully returning her to the wild: a remarkable achievement that inspired Born Free and forever changed the way the world thought about wildlife.

From the plains below, you can barely see Elsa's Kopje. It is tucked into the granite of Mughwango Hill, built around the rocks and trees rather than over them. Not a single indigenous tree was removed during construction. Each cottage sits at a different angle on the hillside, some face the sunrise, some the sunset and no two are the same.

Guests have found trees in the interiors, boulders forming the walls of their showers, and their veranda looking out over plains where elephant herds move in the early morning light. With the dining area, bar, and infinity pool sitting at the top of the kopje, the highest point, with views across 870 square kilometres of Meru National Park stretching to the horizon.

It is one of the most awarded lodge designs in Africa, recognised not for scale but for the care taken to leave the hill largely as it was found.
