Wellness doesn’t always belong within four walls.

During a recent visit from The Travel Yogi, the Olderkesi Conervancy became an open-air yoga space, as guides Enock and Wilson tried their first poses out in the wild.

There was balance, a few wobbles, and plenty of laughter along the way. Global Wellness Day offers a different perspective on wellbeing. Sometimes, it begins simply by stepping outside routine and seeing where it takes you.

"Safari" is Swahili for journey.

And the language itself has been on quite a journey too - born along the East African coast where Bantu communities met Arab traders, carried inland by centuries of exchange, and now the most widely spoken language in Kenya.

Swipe for a few words to take with you.

Every stay at Cottar's Safaris is woven into something bigger - conservancy protection, community partnership, and safari experiences that ripple far beyond a single trip.

On World Environment Day, we're proud to be in it for the long run. 🌿 The Long Run

8,000km apart. Far more in common than expected.

Monitor lizards on both sides. Dugongs in both seas. Hawksbill turtles on both shores. And a staff culture -Kenyan and Indonesian alike - rooted in hospitality, pride, and a hunger to keep learning.

Andrew Dixon and Louise Cottar share reflections from their CEO exchange between two Long Run Global Ecosphere Retreats® on opposite sides of the world.

Different ecosystems. Same spirit. The end of an exchange - and we think the start of something worth continuing. Shared learning at the highest level.

As tourism continues to grow across Africa’s safari landscapes, the conversation is shifting beyond conservation alone towards how wildlife, communities, and tourism can sustainably coexist for generations to come.

We were pleased to see The Economist explore this evolving challenge in a recent feature, highlighting Cottar’s Safaris within the wider discussion around community-led conservation and the future of responsible tourism in East Africa.

In the Maasai Mara, the future of conservation is deeply interconnected with the wellbeing of the people who have long stewarded these landscapes. Today, the 6,500 members of the local Maasai community trust are the primary beneficiaries of the conservancy land that supports both biodiversity and livelihoods, reinforcing the importance of models that place communities at the centre of long-term regeneration.

1 Guide. 5 Defining Traits. | EP 04

This episode follows Wilson Mpatiany, Silver‑level Guide at Cottar’s Safaris.

Wilson joined Cottar’s Safaris in 2015 as a trainee guide, building his craft in the field through hands-on learning and time spent understanding the land at its pace.

Today, his guiding is defined by calm confidence and quiet attentiveness, whether on foot, in the vehicle, or sharing reflections with guests at day’s end.

These five traits offer a closer look at how Wilson reads the bush, moves with it, and shapes each safari experience. 👉

A day in the life of a buffalo: eat grass, eat more grass, take a break, eat grass.

It looks repetitive because it is. Buffalo feed in the cool hours, rest through the heat, and stay close to the herd - a rhythm shaped by temperature, terrain, and the unwavering pursuit of more grass.

Not every day in the Maasai Mara is dramatic. Some days move at the buffalo's pace.

Across very different landscapes, the same questions emerge.

As part of a CEO exchange between two Long Run Global Ecosphere Retreats®, Andrew Dixon and Louise Cottar reflect on what responsible stewardship really looks like.

At Cottar's Safaris, the focus is people, culture, and long-term conservation in the Maasai Mara. At Nikoi Island and Cempedak Island it's the daily reality of protecting fragile islands and marine ecosystems against the pressure of nearby industrialisation.

Different landscapes. Shared purpose: protecting what allows wild places to endure.
