When you’re running a business online, visibility is important. But so is trust.
I’ve just watched a video of a woman who paid for a dining table she saw online. The seller took her money, never delivered the table, and switched off the phone.
And this is exactly why, as much as possible, your online business should have a physical presence where customers can find you, see what you sell, ask questions and, where appropriate, buy before handing over their money.
- A physical location gives customers somewhere to find you. You’re not just a phone number and a social media page.
- It builds trust.
People are more comfortable buying when they can verify that the business actually exists.
- It gives customers an opportunity to see the product before paying, especially for expensive or high-value items.
- It makes your business more accountable. There is a real place and a real business behind the transaction.
- You don’t necessarily need an expensive shop. A shared space, shelf, showroom or pick-up point can give your online business a physical presence without the cost of a full shop.
- Online visibility gets you noticed. Physical presence can help turn that attention into trust.
And in today’s online marketplace, trust is part of what you’re selling.
