Behind every Elewana stay are a thousand quiet acts of care.

The gardener tending herbs at sunrise. The chef harvesting fresh produce from the shamba each morning. Teams thoughtfully managing water, energy, and waste. Solar power systems, regenerative gardens, low-impact technologies, and daily decisions made with people and planet in mind.

Alongside this is ongoing work in community partnerships, employee wellbeing, local sourcing, cultural preservation, and biodiversity protection.

This year, these collective efforts earned Elewana the highest eco-certification in both Kenya and Tanzania.

On World Environment Day, we are reminded that caring for extraordinary places requires commitment every single day. We are proud of how far we have come, and deeply grateful to the teams, communities, and partners who make this work possible.

Writers, conservationists, photographers, and wildlife lovers have all found their way to Lewa, and for good reason. Home to the world’s largest population of Grevy’s zebra and thriving black and white rhino populations, this protected wilderness feels profoundly important.

This year, we are honoured that all Elewana properties have been nominated for the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2026.

A new chapter for Lewa Safari Camp.

Thoughtfully refurbished and deeply rooted in place, the camp's refreshed interiors draw inspiration from the colours, textures, and beauty of the Lewa landscape itself. Soft natural tones, handcrafted details, and expansive views create a space that feels both timeless and connected to the wilderness beyond.

The same beloved camp. Reimagined with care.

A recent guest at Sand River described waking to an elephant just outside the tent, lunches by the river with elephants grazing across the water, and a guide who always seemed to know exactly where to be.

"It felt very personal right from the beginning," they wrote.

That is not something you can manufacture. It is what happens when a team genuinely knows its landscape, and the Mara is doing what the Mara always does.

The Maasai Mara spans 1,510 square kilometres and supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the continent - an estimated 240 large herbivores per square kilometre, with predator densities few ecosystems can match.

Sand River sits in the quieter south-eastern corner of the reserve, close to the Tanzanian border.

A beautiful place to catch an unforgettable safari and possibly the big 5 too!

Sand River Masai Mara sits right on the Tanzanian border, at the southern edge of the reserve where the Sand River marks the boundary with the Serengeti.

Its position isn’t by chance - this is one of the key crossing points for the Great Migration, and by late May, the first wildebeest herds are already gathering in the northern Serengeti.

Arriving now, the plains are still green, the landscape full, and the resident predators well fed, with breeding season activity still playing out across lion prides and cheetah families.

Tortilis Camp takes its name from the acacia tortilis, the umbrella thorn that defines this corner of Amboseli, and the tree under which most of the best bush breakfasts here happen to be eaten.

The kitchen runs on produce from an on-site organic garden, and the breakfast is set up open-fronted, facing the Mt Kilimanjaro.

On a clear morning, which May tends to offer, that view is the only decoration the table needs.
