Gamewatchers Safaris for exclusive safaris in the best wildlife areas in East Africa with day & night 4x4 game drives and guided walks with professional Maasai guides. A pioneer in eco-tourism for over 30 years, Gamewatchers combines environmental protection with cultural preservation by working with local communities on conservation projects. We are committed to helping preserve Africa’s unique w

ildlife, landscapes and local communities. We believe that the best way to do this is through sustainable ecotourism ventures that benefit the local communities and give our guests a rewarding experience. Our Porini Camps are a sustainable model that practically implements these principles. We are dedicated to providing our clients with exemplary personalised service and strive to have them leave as friends. The Porini Camps are situated within exclusive wildlife conservancies in Selenkay, Laikipia and the Mara. Each of our Porini Camps offers an intimate safari experience away from the crowds of tourists in minibuses. As well as the Porini Camps, we also operate two Adventure Camps, which offer the same high quality wildlife safari experience normally associated with top-end safari camps (e.g. day and night game drives, open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles, guided walks and expert guides) but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic adventure camps. These Adventure camps are ideal for those who are travelling on a budget but don’t want to compromise on their wildlife-viewing opportunities. We have received numerous international awards, so you can have confidence in Gamewatchers Safaris as one of the leading and longest established safari companies. Gamewatchers Safaris won “Africa’s Responsible Tourism Award” in the World Travel Awards for 2018 & 2019. Selenkay Conservancy won the 2018 Eco Warrior Award for “Best Conservancy in Promoting Culture and Heritage”. We have also won “Kenya’s Leading Safari Camp Brand” three times and “Africa’s Leading Tented Safari Camps” three times and we were “Kenya’s Tour Operator of the Year” in the 2015 Ecotourism Warrior Awards. In addition, our camps are regularly reviewed on TripAdvisor and all of our Porini Safari Camps have been recognised as TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame winners.

At Gamewatchers Safaris, sustainability is about more than protecting wildlife and landscapes — it’s also about investing in the wellbeing and opportunities of the communities that share these spaces.

Recently, through a partnership with Padmad Kenya, Wildlife Habitat Trust and the generous support of Minal Shah, we supported menstrual health outreach at Lenkisem Secondary School and Olanti Primary School. Together, the initiative reached *311 students* and distributed *186 reusable menstrual kits*, helping improve access to menstrual health support and education.

Access to menstrual products should never be a barrier to education, confidence, or participation in everyday life. By supporting practical, long-term solutions, we hope to contribute towards creating environments where girls can continue learning and pursuing their goals with dignity.

Thank you to all partners involved in making initiatives like this possible. Small actions, working together, can create meaningful and lasting change.

On World Environment Day, we are reminded that protecting nature is one of the most effective ways to address the environmental challenges facing our planet.

Across Kenya’s wildlife conservancies, community-led conservation is helping to safeguard vast landscapes of grasslands, woodlands, and critical wildlife habitats. These natural ecosystems do far more than support biodiversity — they also act as important carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon while helping to maintain healthy, resilient environments.

At Porini Camps, we believe that conservation works best when people and nature thrive together. Through responsible tourism, local communities receive direct benefits from protecting their land and wildlife, creating sustainable livelihoods while preserving ecosystems for future generations.

Every guest who chooses a conservancy safari contributes to a model that supports habitat protection, wildlife conservation, community empowerment, and climate resilience.

This World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of partnership — between communities, conservationists, travellers, and the natural world. Together, we can help protect the landscapes that sustain wildlife, support livelihoods, and inspire future generations.

🌍

Sustainability at Porini Camps is about protecting wild spaces while supporting the communities who live alongside them. Through low-impact safari tourism, we help ensure wildlife habitats remain intact while creating meaningful local benefits.

Every guest stay contributes to conservation efforts that keep Kenya’s ecosystems thriving — from open savannahs to vital migration corridors.

Responsible travel isn’t a trend here; it’s the foundation of how we operate.

: What makes Selenkay Conservancy so important?

Join Selenkay Conservancy Manager Daniel Mamai as he introduces this remarkable community-owned conservancy and explains its significance for the Maasai community, wildlife, and the wider Amboseli ecosystem.

Established in 1997, Selenkay was one of Kenya’s pioneering conservancies, helping to demonstrate how conservation and community livelihoods can work hand in hand. The model developed here has since inspired conservancies across the country.

In recognition of its impact, Selenkay Conservancy was named the World’s Leading Conservation Programme in 2025.

Watch the video to learn more about the history, achievements, and ongoing importance of this award-winning conservancy.

Before we jump into a new week and a new month, here are a few wildlife highlights from the past week across some of Kenya's most spectacular safari destinations 🦁🐘🦏

📍 Olare Motorogi Conservancy
The Topi Pride was spotted looking relaxed and healthy, offering guests some memorable lion sightings in this wildlife-rich conservancy.

📍 Ol Kinyei Conservancy
The Sampu Enkare Breakaway Pride was seen alongside a herd of elephants — one of those classic Mara moments where multiple iconic species share the same landscape.

📍 Lake Nakuru National Park
Giraffes, rhinos and lions all made appearances, showcasing the incredible diversity that makes Nakuru such a rewarding safari destination.

📍 Amboseli National Park
Large herds of elephants continued to impress guests as they moved across the plains, with the park remaining one of Africa's best places to observe these magnificent animals.

Every week in the bush is different, and that's part of the magic. We can't wait to see what the coming month has in store.

🐾 Until next week — may your binoculars stay focused and your camera batteries charged!

We’re kicking off a new travel series — and for the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing handpicked safari + beach itineraries for those who want the best of both worlds: wild adventure followed by pure Indian Ocean relaxation.

Because honestly… why choose when you can have both?

To start things off, we’re featuring a classic favourite: the Porini & Beach 9 Night Special.

This 9-night / 10-day journey brings together some of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife experiences with the calm, turquoise coastline of the Indian Ocean.

Your adventure begins with a night in Nairobi National Park before flying into the world-famous Maasai Mara. Here, you’ll spend 4 nights split between the multi-award-winning Porini Mara Camp, Maasai Mara, Kenya. and Porini Lion Camp, Maasai Mara, Kenya — staying in exclusive wildlife areas where nature takes centre stage.

Think guided bush walks, off-road game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, sundowners with uninterrupted views, and bush breakfasts that make you question all future breakfasts indoors.

From the Mara, the journey continues by air to the Kenyan coast, where the pace slows right down and the safari boots are swapped for sandals — ending in an Indian Ocean paradise.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more safari + beach combinations designed for different travel styles, moods, and dream escapes.

Stay tuned — your next itinerary might just be your next holiday.

Last week, our Wildlife Habitat Coordinator, Chris Kipaa, held an interactive session under the Smart Learning Program at Nkineji Comprehensive School in Mara, Narok County.

The program is helping transform education for marginalised learners in communities like Ol Kinyei Conservancy and MARA RIPOI conservancy by creating better access to learning opportunities, digital literacy, mentorship, and environmental awareness. Through these sessions, students are not only gaining knowledge in the classroom but are also being empowered with confidence, curiosity, and skills that can help shape brighter futures.

Conservation goes beyond protecting wildlife and habitats — it is also about investing in people and supporting the next generation of conservation stewards. By working closely with local schools, the Smart Learning Program is helping bridge educational gaps while strengthening the connection between communities and conservation.

At Gamewatchers Safaris, we believe meaningful conservation starts with communities, and education remains one of the most powerful tools for long-term impact.

Most people look at tusks and think “ivory horns” or “natural weapons.” Plot twist: they’re actually teeth. Just… very overachieving ones.

Elephant tusks are elongated incisor teeth that grow continuously throughout an elephant’s life. Made of ivory (a dentine material), they emerge from the upper jaw and serve multiple roles beyond just appearance or defence. Think digging for water, stripping bark, moving objects, and even helping elephants access minerals hidden underground.

And here’s the part that often gets missed: tusks are deeply connected to an elephant’s life history. You can’t “replace” them if they’re broken or removed. They grow slowly, carry wear patterns, and tell stories of survival, foraging, and environment.

So yes—what looks like a weapon is actually a highly specialised tooth. Nature rarely builds anything for just one job.

A reminder for : sometimes what looks extraordinary… is just anatomy doing its quiet, brilliant work.
